Since he was out of options he needs to be added to the 25-man roster as well, correct? Or can they add them to the 40-man and immediately put him on waivers and try to get him to clear so they can send him to AAA?

Marrero needs to play every day so glad he isn't up, but I don't see what the Red Sox see in Jimenez. Already 27. No plate discipline. Decent rookie ball campaign for Orem in 2008, but we don't really need a 3B with a weak free winging bat.

I think the latter, but I sure as heck won't be losing any sleep if the Sox lose this guy.

Gotcha. The biggest benefit of having Holt is because we really wouldn't need to be wasting a 25 man spot on players like this.

If they'd rather have this guy than be forced to play Craig in right, doesn't that pretty clearly indicate that they think Craig is just done.

And not happy with what Weeks has been doing in Pawtucket.

Or they don't think they can cobble a RF together with some sort of combo of Nava and Craig/Brentz. If you need Holt to play RF on a near-daily basis, there's no backup for a whole lot of positions if you're not willing to sub in an OF in right to move Holt to wherever he's needed.

  • Infielder Luis Jimenez, who the Red Sox claimed from the Brewers this weekend, allows Boston to use their other bench players more flexibly, manager John Farrell says (via Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald). “Righthanded utility guy, we like the defense, particularly at third, if that comes into play,” says Farrell. “It gives us some more flexibility with Brock (Holt) and Daniel Nava, and hopefully a chance to get back to 13 position players.” Jimenez rates as a plus defensive third baseman and could prove to be a valuable backup for Pablo Sandoval. Jimenez can also play elsewhere in the infield.
This doesn't make that much sense to me.  If Holt is playing RF and Panda goes out, then Holt can just move to 3b and Nava or Craig can play 1B.  It seems like we need the extra pitcher more than anything right now.  Our lineup is so righty heavy, do we really need another R bat sitting on the bench.

Maybe they've finally realized Craig isn't going to get any better and they're finally going to sell him for 30¢ on the dollar.  Then it makes sense to have Jimenez who is an OK bat.

EDIT: Is it possible they are thinking about sending X down to AAA and inserting Brock Holt at SS?  He's made some incredible plays at SS and I just wonder if we'd be a better team with Holt starting there and Xander back in AAA getting his shit together.  I'm a huge Xander fan but he's looked out of whack for a while.  Might be time to send him down (with the bonus of stalling his clock too).  Then having Jimenez back up 3b if Holt is starting at SS makes a whole lot more sense.

EDIT #2:  Maybe I'm looking to deep into this.  :)

Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters, including CSNNE.com’s Sean McAdam (Twitter link), Jimenez was claimed to allow Brock Holt to stay in right field, have a third non-catcher position player on the bench, and Jackie Bradley Jr. isn’t eligible to return to Boston yet. Bradley was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket Wednesday and must spend 10 days there, unless recalled as an injury replacement.

Article about Luis Jimenez.  Always wanted to play for the Sox.

"One of the biggest things [why] I wanted to come to this park, a lot of history," Jimenez said. "When I was with the Angels, I was going to come a couple of times, but I got sent down right when the trip was coming. Now that I'm here, I'm so happy."
This is great to see. Hope he locks Craig in a closet.

NESN article about the pickup.

"The logic behind acquiring Jimenez centered mostly on what the 27-year-old brings to the table. He’s a strong defender, particularly at third base, who can play multiple positions in the infield, inherently giving the Red Sox additional roster flexibility once he joins the major league club, likely Monday. But acquiring Jimenez wasn’t based entirely on his personal defensive aptitude or Boston’s desire to return to 13 position players with outfielder Shane Victorino still on the disabled list. The Red Sox also took into consideration Holt’s continued strong play, with the idea being that having Jimenez as another utility option allows Boston to use Holt more frequently in right field as Victorino works back to full health."

I think the point is to let Holt play in RF instead of Craig.
