Red Sox signed OF Andres Torres to a minor league contract.

Torres has surgery last August to remove bone spurs from his left Achilles, but he was expected to be healthy a while ago. The 36-year-old sports a career .242/.317/.382 batting line over parts of nine major league seasons and will provide the Red Sox with some veteran depth at all three outfield positions.

I mentioned it in the Bradley thread, but Torres has favorable splits against LHP, which may make him a potential complement to Bradley in CF. Perhaps a better fit as a 5th OF option than Sizemore, used sparingly.

He's obviously no savior, although I anticipate thousands of sarcastic declarations to echo throughout Red Sox nation (edit: see above)

I think he's ultimately the Sizemore replacement.  With Grady's PA incentives due to kick in shortly, this signing makes sense, as they can save themselves like $4M by replacing him.

Yup. This is definitely Sizemore's replacement. No reason to keep him around any longer.

While he's obviously cheaper than Grady, Torres has no potential, neither short term or long term. I really don't want to see him taking AB's from anyone on the ML roster or Pawtucket.  As long as Jackie is hitting above Mendoza (yes not by much, but he's OPS'ing only 23 points less than Carp and is tied for 5th in RBI's LOL), he should get the nod over Torres, IMHO.

Torres makes the most sense as a Gomes replacement, no? So if we can save the couple mil on Gomes, decent move.

The sad thing is that I distinctly remember thinking that Torres was cooked while watching him play for the Giants last year.  Then I looked at his numbers and realized he'd be one of the best-hitting Sox OF this year.  Definitely worth taking a low-expectations flier on him, especially since I think waiting for Sizemore to produce is folly.

He's already 36? Jeez. That was fast.

He spent 10 years in the minors.  Torres struggled with ADHD-related issues for the first decade of his pro career before he finally started taking medication for them in 2007.

Wow.  We've already figured out who he's replacing!  Gomes, Sizemore, and Bradley!

You do know he hasn't played an inning of competitive baseball since last August, right?  And yet we're already penciling him into the 25 man roster?

You know who else missed Spring Training and a couple of months of regular season ball before joining the Sox recently?  That's right, Stephen Drew!  A tried and true championship winning SS. And how well has that worked out for the Sox so far?

So my advice is to hold your horses, sit back, let him get into game shape, maybe play a couple of weeks at Pawtucket, and see what happens in Boston over the next month or so (injuries, hot streaks, cold streaks, etc), before annointing this guy as a replacement or platoon partner for anyone.

He still had some bad games in the field last year for the Giants, e.g., too many shoestring catch failures that turned into triples. Those were the kinds of things that had been previously attributed to the ADHD problem. The Giants let him go as a backup outfielder in favor of Gregor Blanco, who is pretty marginal himself, although he's been hot lately. Torres had the one really nice year in the Giants first world series year, 2010. I thought he was done. Meh.
