I guess a 25% discount on a new jersey is better than nothing, but I'm willing to bet that this "guarantee" is a great deal for the Pats given the margin on jerseys.

Especially the margin on jerseys bought from the team store or team website.  That's really where this guarantee helps them.  The 25% potential discount may or may not tip a lot of people into the buying a jersey category but I think it will help convince a lot of people to buy them from the Pats and not from a third party retailer.

This is genius because A. it will drive more initial sales and B. create more secondary purchases. They might actually make more money with this discount than before.  It will certainly get more jerseys out there, more exposure for the team

La Mancha.
When I first saw the headline I figured it was going to be something like "if you buy a player jersey and that player goes to prison, we'll give you your money back".

edit: I'm not kidding.

You're not getting your money back for that Dennard jersey you bought. Sorry. He wasn't released by the Pats, only from jail.

A great marketing move.

They still raised the prices on the top two tiers 18% and 11% and are offering a guaranteed 25% discount if you buy another jersey with a 200+% profit margin.

So I am firmly in the group saying "I love the Easley pick" .

BUT I am slightly uncomfortable that the Pats made their jersey guarantee announcement on the same day that they draft a guy in the first round with two reconstructed knees.  just saying.

A "guarantee" should mean an exchange (or refund).

No because that's not what the word means.

This could develop into a potential financial problem, not cap space, but the jersey rebate size.

But Bill if we cut D'andre, we'll owe millions

I think you've got it backwards.  It'd be more like "Bill, if you cut D'andre, we project 10,000 new jersey sales when people come in to take advantage of the 25% off (of a 500% profit)".

It really is very friendly wording from the media on this.  They mention a rebate, but that's not happening at all.  The buyer gets no money back.  But I'm guessing the article would get less notice if it were titled "Patriots offer 25% off coupon to jilted shirt owners".

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to buy a Tippett jersey and get my 25% off coupon.

The definition of "guarantee" does not require an exchange or refund if the player leaves, but it's a promise.  The Pats are saying that if they break their promise that a player will be around for an additional year, they'll give you 25% off another full-priced jersey.  Not really a guarantee in anyone's understanding.

Well, I don't want to beg the question and it is ironic, but that was the exception that proves the rule.
