Because Girardi has been killing those guys in recent weeks, and both have shown signs of slipping because of it. Kelley will help, but the non-Tanaka rotation's inability to get deep into games has worn down the strength of the team, the back of the pen.

I think the mistake he made (easy to say from my couch) is that with Kelley out, he should have let Betances and Warren go longer at times, 2 or 3 innings. This would have allowed him to avoid using both of those guys plus Robertson in what seemed like every single close game. Instead, those three combined for 21 appearances in the previous 13 games, obviously unsustainable for too long.

Interesting:

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN  28m
As @keithlaw noted, the Yankees' first pick in the draft, LHP Jacob Lindgren, has a chance to move quickly and pitch in MLB this year.

Lindgren has excellent swing-and-miss and ground ball rates, and the stuff that could translate in the big leagues for NYY very soon.

What Law actually said (Insider only):

Quickest to the majors: Jacob Lindgren, LHP, Mississippi State -- Lindgren can get left-handed hitters at the major league level out right now, as his slider is virtually unhittable against hitters from that side and he attacks batters with a 92-94 mph fastball. There’s not much upside here, but I’d be surprised if he wasn’t a member of the New York Yankees bullpen by the summer of 2015, if not sooner.

And Mark Montgomery sent to AA as the corresponding move with his velocity down, he seems to be a bust.

In related news, if Heath Bell ever pitches for NY, I am going to have to seriously rethink my fandom.

Jose Ramirez to the AAA DL, I don't see any specifics on that yet, but I knew it couldn't be good when he left mid-inning last night and was replaced by a position player. If he could be effective at the ML level, NY could move Warren to the rotation where he belongs, but it seems like we're pretty far from that right now.
