New York’s deal with the embattled free agent prompted many questions and raised eyebrows. What would his role be, and would he embrace it? How would it affect Smith, their 2013 first-rounder? Would his criminal past continue to nip at his heels? And just how much would this guy ‒ with declining skills, an injury history, and a record of questionable decision-making and possession management ‒ have left in the tank?

I love the title to this piece; I love this piece. I've read lots of "how did we get here?" pieces on Vick...this is the best, IMO.

Great take, and I am loving Jet week so far this week.

One minor issue, though.  The "Best QB since Namath" TGG post is sort of out of place in there.  You can debate whether a single TGG poster's opinion is worth including at all (although I get what you were going for there), but that post appears to be from 2009 in a TGG discussion about QB options for the 2009 season.  Setting up the quote by using the phrase "Greeted with unbridled optimism" makes it seem like that post was from this past offseason when they signed Vick.

It is relatively minor, but I think it detracts from the overall piece and is not in-line with the excellent work you guys are otherwise producing.

Just my $.02.

A couple of minor things, but Geno Smith was a second round pick, not a first rounder, and.the TGG poster said Vick would be the best Jets QB since Namath. Though I do imagine there are pockets of Jets fans who think Namath is the best QB ever.

Thanks a ton for the heads-ups on those gaffs. This article actually began as a SoSH post by SSF shortly after the signing. Jae and I worked to transform it into a piece by incorporating more recent content. He's in the midst of a move back to Korea, so the collaboration had its challenges.

However, that's a lousy excuse for completely missing the date of that TGG post, and I've deleted the reference altogether. It never should have made it past my own keyboard, let alone our editing stages.

This was an editorial addition (by me) to the piece and I apologize to Mark, Jae and the readers for not checking the date. We collectively considered many, many TGG posts that did qualify as "unbridled optimism" and I take the blame for not checking it thoroughly enough.
