I can't imagine that Chiarelli wasn't evaluating Kessel, Lucic and Marchand for the Senators before he came to Boston.

I believe that, officially, the agreement the Sens had with the B's barred Chia from working on the Bruins draft, but everyone knew he was going to have the final say on who the Bruins selected. My memory may be fading, but I think they may have ended the charade before the draft anyway.

I don't see why he wouldn't get full credit for Kessel, Lucic and Marchand.

First off, I think that general managers are given too much credit for good draft picks and too much blame for poor picks. Yes, they have final say and are a part of the process, but they're generally relying on the word of numerous scouts and other members of the front office brass as much as doing their own evaluations. That's part of the reason why I think Chiarelli "wouldn't get full credit for Kessel, Lucic, and Marchand." But that wasn't my point at all. The point was, if we have to go back to 2006 to find a Bruins draft pick (Lucic/Marchand) who has made an NHL impact already and wasn't a top-5 ranked North American skater heading into the draft, it shows how difficult it is for consistently successful teams to find talent through the draft. In other words, I simply don't think there's a compelling argument that Shero is a seriously poor drafter. He may be, but I certainly haven't seen the case made clearly and convincingly.

Isles had a busy day. They elected to retain their first round pick this year, meaning they'll send their 2015 first round pick to the Sabres to complete the Thomas Vanek deal. As a result, 2015 is a "go for broke and try to compete" year for the Isles so they've signed Jaroslav Halak to a 4-year, $18 million contract.

FYI: before any reporter had anything about Barroway/NYI, fan "RickyRed" had inside tips on the message board @islandermania

According to "RickyRed" the sale of the Isles to Barroway is complete, and will be announced soon. Everything going on with the Isles seems to point to that info being on the money

That has to be good news for Isles fans, I'd feel like anyone would be an upgrade after Wang.

Halak signing is good news, gives them some stability in goal. He's not elite, but he's a viable starter who isn't old or made of glass. Curious to see what else they do.

I don't think that's news to anyone... I thought it was pretty clear when he took a victory lap with Selanne. (Also, does Pronger still technically count as "active" since he's still on roster?)

Technically, yes, else his cap hit can't go to LTIR after the first day of the season. Practically, he's as retired from the NHL as you and I.

And Marc Savard.
