Moving the Line
More life from the offense. A journey of many good games starts with one, so may it continue with yesterday as launching point. Bit less confidence in this one than yesterday, but hey, why not, right?

Lou Gehrig played in his 1,103 consecutive game with the Yankees on this date in 1932. This tied Joe Sewell for the most with one team, who did so with Cleveland--but was on the Yankees as this happened. A different era, different game to be sure, but worth looking at Sewell's strikeout numbers by season and career alike, even for his era. They just didn't happen. Absurdity.

As was the case yesterday, we'll take a moment most people know but give people a lesser known variant. Yesterday was the combined no-hitters, today is the imperfect game. You know of Jim Joyce, Armando Galarraga, Jason Donald, and the 27th out. But you likely know less of the time in 1994 on this date where Greg Gagne was declared safe on first by Gary Cederstrom, beating Bobby Witt to the bag, even though replays clearly showed out. That hit was the only hit in an otherwise perfect game.

6th was a very disappointing inning for NY. They went 3-5 with 3 clean hits, Volpe's baserunning error (an out either way to be fair) and Verdugo's DP, just one run scored.

Having Gil in the rotation directly after Cole seems pretty dumb, I hope they move that around some soon. It doesn't matter who Cole follows, but Gil should be following anyone but Cole.

Baltimore loses again, lead back to 2 games (1 in the loss column).

Who wants to take Cole and the Mets after midnight? Who feels lucky? I'm guessing they'll be aiming for 80-85 pitches for Cole this time, but the bullpen is very well rested thanks to the off day and Yoendrys Gomez

Gomez roster-survived not being available Sat-Mon and will be back on full rest on Wednesday. Also with Cole probably in the 5 inning range, I could see Gomez in a 2-3 inning role on 3 days rest. He has a lengthy injury history though, so we'll see.
