Bit of a struggle of late, ultimately inevitable, right? Ultimately though, with this kind of lineup, where Judge and Soto are both there, that's not likely to last that long. It's a question of when, not if this minor scuffle ends, and we've seen enough this year, this team can be an absolute holy terror when it's at full force.
And hey, it's my mother's birthday today. If you think my stat blasts are excessive in length and quantity, try living with me like she did! She always loves that I know baseball to the extent I do, even if it's not her sport as much as football is. Always by my side to take me to games growing, still to this day asks me questions about how to watch, who's going to win, score predictions, all that stuff. So bring her some joy for all of us. Though I've got to try to convince her you can't root for both the Yankees and Red Sox, as she is wont to do.
Since it is me though, I figure for every game this streak goes, I'll give a couple of this day in history nuggets for the corresponding game and calendar day. One for the Yankees, one for baseball.
-May the spirits of 1930 be with them: Yankees won 20-13 in Game 2 over a doubleheader over Philly on this date 94 years ago. Only 17 times in their history have they scored more than this in a single game.
-In overall baseball history this day, we've probably all heard of Johnny Vander Meer's consecutive no-hitters but did you know it was nearly matched in 1947? Ewell Blackwell of the Reds (naturally Cincinnati again!) had his second consecutive effort broken up with one out in the 9th by Brooklyn's Eddie Stanky.
