Granted he's been with Pawtucket for what seems like forever, but might this explain in some small way why he was so awful earlier in the year for Boston? From Alex Speier via Twitter:

Jonathan Herrera said that he will undergo season-ending surgery to remove bone chips in his elbow. Hoping to be ready to play winter ball.

He batted .233/.307/.289/.596 in 104 PA (42 G) for the Red Sox before being optioned to AAA on July 6. He then hit .309/.350/.382/.732 in 61 PA (13 G) for Pawtucket through July 26. He's been on the DL ever since.

The effects of bone chips on pitching and throwing are well-documented, but I'm unaware of any publicized cases of this issue affecting a hitter's swing. So absent that, I'm just going to assume he sucked. Besides, Butch Hobson managed to hit 59 doubles & 47 HR and knocked in 192 runs while playing the '77 and '78 seasons with a quarter-cup of pea stone floating and rattling around in his joint.

Herrera made $1.3M this year as an Arb 2 player, and he turns 30 on November 3. Considering the Rule 5 roster decisions the team is facing, I don't think there's a chance in hell Cherington tenders him a contract.

By the way, based on 2014 returns the Sox still "won" the trade:

Jonathan Herrera: 0.0 fWAR
Franklin Morales: - 0.4 fWAR in 114.1 IP (28 G, 17 GS) for $1.7M (Arb 3)
Christopher Martin: + 0.1 fWAR in 15.2 IP (Apr 26-June 20) for $212k (MLB & MiLB)
