Didn’t see a thread about this, which probably reflects how exciting a refresh it is.

Anyway, got mine on Friday and unbeknownst to me it has some newfangled feature where it senses if you’re in a “severe crash” and automatically calls 911. So I have mine in a bag with a bunch of towels on a boat ride today and my daughter tosses the bag onto a dock and the freaking thing starts going crazy with alarms and calls 911. I manage to get over to it and hang up before 911 answered, but then the dispatcher calls me back and they interrogate me for a few minutes before agreeing not to send the police. It was totally ridiculous.

Yikes, have to watch out for the towel bag crash bug.

Just got the pro, mostly for the sat SOS feature (can ditch a separate gadget), but the camera is outstanding. There’s a 48 megapixel option that allows big crops while keeping good resolution. Honestly mostly wanted it for ski trips.

Your daughter must have tossed that bag with enough force (or the phone slammed against something extremely hard) for it to trigger that

This isn’t a 14 issue but Life360 has a similar function. Let’s just say that taking the phone on roller coasters produces similar results.

Hasn't this been a thing for a while? I feel like I kept seeing a commercial where a guy on a bike crashed badly and the phone called for help.

I wasn’t planning on getting the 14. My 12 pro is seemingly doing fine, battery health is still OK (87%) and I just finished my last Verizon payment on it. I was thinking next year might be about right to upgrade, and perhaps the 2023 model would be more than a refresh. But Verizon tells me I can get $700 to trade in my 12 on an exactly equipped 14, paying the balance in $11 monthly installments over three years. Plus my employer subsidizes $150 every two years for a new phone. So a $1,099 iPhone 14 for effectively $249, which would be financed for free over three years. I won’t get that kind of trade in a year from now. I don’t “need” a new phone now, but I wonder if it makes sense to pass up that deal.

Would welcome any advice!

I have the same phone and am holding off until next year. Kuo keeps saying USB-C will be added next year and I haven't noticed the cell companies downgrade the trade in value for phones for 3 year old phones vs 2. That said, that looks like a solid deal and you can just trade in the 14 next year.

Do you have to change plans? I've received the $800 off if you trade-in and switch plans. I have a legacy plan with very favorable terms (essentially unlimited data for ~$50 / month for me and my wife) so I would end up paying more money after 9 or so months depending on which plan I took. So watch out for hidden terms and whether it impacts your month-to-month payment.

That’s Fall Detection. It detects when you take a hard fall and don’t get up (walking or biking). It only works with the Watch. It’s been available since the Watch series 4. Crash Detection extends on that to offer the same functionality but for car crashes. And Crash Detection works without the Watch.

VORP’s daughter must’ve really chucked that bag!

I got the 14 Pro and only got $270 for my 11 Pro trade-in. There were some scratches on the screen, but nothing catastrophic. The battery quality was down to 75% and I was recharging constantly, so I figured I'd just get a new one since it had been a few years. I don't know if this is relevant to your situation, but I'm not sure I'd count on trade-in benevolence from Apple.

I did this math over the weekend for my 1st gen SE to 3rd gen SE. AT&T offering $5/mo for 36 months, but I am in a grandfathered in a $50/mo plan and would need to upgrade to a $65 unlimited plan. In the long run, I pay $700+ more.

I could go to Target and pay out of pocket for a 2nd gen SE for half the price (or as long as I can keep my grandfathered plan)...or buy an iPad mini and shift my app usage there instead of the iPhone

I pulled the trigger on this: $800 trade-in for my 12 pro 256 on a new 14 pro 256 (plus my employer $150 reimbursement). So while I didn't really need a new phone, the trade-in/reimbursement and $8 monthly payment seemed to make this close to a no-brainer. (I already had the Unlimited plan, so that didn't have to change.)

The only downside I could see is that the trade-in subsidy is paid out as a credit over 36 months, so if I traded in again in a year or two, I would lose the balance left on that credit (depending on future Verizon deals and promotions ).

Apple would've given you about $430 for the trade-in, so giving you $800 spread monthly over three years is essentially a $10 monthly service credit from Verizon to keep you around for that time.
