The Slums of Shaolin
My laptop shit the bed and I'm trying to decide whether I want an iPad or Windows Laptop (like lenovo, dell, etc..).

I'd like to spend under $400 or so, and it looks like on Amazon I could get a 32 gig iPad or bunch of different laptop options.

The reason I'm considering an iPad is I don't really work from home so a laptop doesn't seem necessary.  Mainly I'd want this for browsing the web, skyping, and streaming stuff like netflix and sporting events.

I guess my only question is occassionally I have to torrent certain soccer games that I want to watch.  Is this an option on the iPad?

Other than that is their any big advantage that a laptop would have over an iPad?  I was never an apple guy but I went from Droid to iPhone and love the simplicity...

A real keyboard is one great reason to get a real computer.  You could get a Bluetooth keyboard for the iPad (HPC-ette has one), but you don't have room for one in your budget.

Another great reason is that the multiprocessing contract for an iOS application allows the OS to kill a background app whenever resources are getting tight. Well designed apps are supposed to be leaving breadcrumbs behind so that they can put you back in a similar state as before the grim reaper came, but there are lots of apps not that well designed. Run the SoSH app, switch to another app, switch through four or five more (check your mail, check your iMessages, look for a photo, take a picture), and then switch back to SoSH. If you are in the same spot in the same forum as when you switched away, well, God Bless You. If not, well the forum software thinks you read a bunch of messages you didn't actually get a chance to read.

Safari is pretty well designed along this axis, but it seems to be reluctant to cache HTML pages on "disk." So the process of following the breadcrumb trail will usually involve pulling bits from the server, and possibly even POSTing some data to facilitate that, which necessitates asking you, "Hey boss, you want I should POST that form you posted before I met the Grim Reaper?" Only it happens in less informative language.

I love my iPad, but there's no offing way I would expect it to replace my laptop.
