I know I didn’t pay as much attention this season as normal, but Joey Gallo being a Gold Glove finalist is news to me.

Yeah, some of those were strange to me. Never knew Jonathan Schoop was known for being a great defensive player. B-Ref has him as above average. He also has a higher career WAR than Ryan Howard.

Where are the Red Sox? 2 Fraziers and no Red Sox? Fraziers are the new market inefficiency, it appears.

Byron Buxton, Ramon Laureano, Luis Robert

Who are these people and are they really better than JBJ?

Yeah, I noticed that too.

So the reason these nominees are especially strange is that there is no human observation element this year, solely the highest rated guys on the SABR Defensive Index, which is an amalgmation of defensive stats like UZR and DRS and others, as explained at the link below. They will release the full lists after the winners are announced in a couple weeks.

Clint Frazier had a solid season defensively but he might still be NY's 6th or 7th best defensive outfielder from the year-end roster (Judge, Gardner, Tauchman, Hicks was bad this year but would be better than Clint in a corner, Stanton is a perma-DH now but was always good defensively and Wade plays some OF).

In a year where observation/reputation actually makes sense given SSS defensive metrics, they only use metrics?

Interesting.

Well, Byron Buxton won a GG in 2017 and has a 6.6 dWAR (bbref) in just under half the total games that JBJ's accumulated 7.8 dWAR, so you probably should know about him, and yeah he's probably better.

Still trying to figure out how Clint Frazier went from defensive liability to GG nominee in two seasons. We know the concussions hurt him last season. Maybe he graded out well in defensive metrics in 2020 because of his speed. He is among the fastest runners going first to home. Does he take good routes in right field? I kept holding my breath when the ball was hit to Clint but by late September I actually trusted him. But a Gold Glove?
