So far this guy has been a shoulda-seen-it-coming disappointment. What a waste. Maybe he can come back and give us something at – oh good – GUARD. Ridiculously poor front office-ing. I am getting a little tired of Patriots.com being better at predicting NFL success than BB has been over the last handful of years. I think Lazar is going to (understandably) blow his last gasket.

Lazar will be on the PU podcast today - wait for it.

Man, I'll never get why they gave Riley Reiff more than 4 million guaranteed. He was on a one year prove it deal with the Bears last season, proved he sucked, and got more money??

Unclear how anyone would have predicted that an opposing player would fall on his leg causing his knee to buckle in a preseason game.

He looked so bad in training camp they had him in a guard rotation by the time of his injury, it's not like this was a bad signing becausde he got hurt.
Maybe-not totally clear why they had him playing guard (was it to develop depth at guard because he couldn’t hack it at tackle-you’re assuming the later and that would be my guess too but the Pats aren’t super transparent about this stuff).

If he’s not at least the swing tackle this year it’s a bas signing, agreed

I just look at what Bill does. He shifted Reiff to guard even when their tackle depth was so bad with Anderson's injury they brought in two guys close to the start of the season and carried 11 OL on the roster (when historically they've averaged 8 linemen on the 53). If he thought Reiff could play tackle, he'd be playing tackle. He got tackle money.

The tackle market was basically 2 top-tier guys (OBj and McGlinchey) and then a VERY steep dropoff in talent. How steep? These guys rated old friend Isaiah Wynn as the #6 OT free agent: https://walterfootball.com/freeagents2023ot.php

FWIW, Calvin Anderson was ranked 19th on the same list. Several former Pats linemen were on the list as well, including Jermaine Eluemunor at#5, Cameron Fleming at #17 and Marcus Cannon at #21. Reiff came in at#25.

Using PFF's free agent rankings, Wynn was ranked #5 available, Eluemunor 7th, and Fleming 8th: https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-2023-free-agent-rankings-offensive-tackles . None of the others mentioned made their top 15. I was very bearish on Reiff coming in, but he wrangled one last guaranteed chunk of change. We'll be lucky if he plays half the season at this rate.

Well except Reiff is hurt and they brought in two tackles after Reiff got hurt and they went through roster machinations partially in order to retain eligibility for Reiff later in the season all of which suggests the Pats think he can still play a little (and possibly still play tackle).

All that said I suspect Reiff ends up providing little more than back up depth along the line and veteran leadership for whatever that is worth

So Reiff got hurt after he was already playing guard and then they brought in... two tackles to replace someone that they had at guard? And that's no indictment on how they viewed Reiff at tackle? You can argue it's an indication on how they viewed all of their options at RT and not just Reiff, but they had Sidy Sow, a college guard, playing tackle and not Reiff right before he got hurt. I think it's very easy to say at the very least they got less than what they paid for with him. Kinda reminds me of the Shaun Ellis contract at this point.

Bringing in two tackles after he got hurt suggests to me that they think he can play tackle. Ymmv. The big assumption you’re sticking with is he can’t play tackle and I am not so sure. Like, maybe?

Shaun Ellis was a good signing! He contributed some to a pretty good defense.

One thing that is hard to evaluate is what does a Reiff or an Ellis bring to a unit as a tough veteran. We know BB thinks about this stuff and maybe he’s wrong and maybe he isn’t maybe but when your oline is andrews owenwu a lot of young guys and a giant flake maybe adding a locker room guy with some stature helps.

All that said I’m squarely with you that it’s really unlikely that Reiif’s on field contributions match his contract

They definitely wanted better and tougher guys in the room. Without breaking the bank on anyone this was just a hard situation to be in. None of the top 4-5 guys at OT were fits or if they were fits got drafted before they picked AND it was a bad OT class with no depth. FA wise they either had to have paid out for a RT or gone with a stop-gap solution investing in multiple guys and waiting to make a play next year.

I can't stress how different the 2024 OT class will be. The seniors and even some of the underclassmen coming out are really good and there are a lot of them. The top end of the draft might not be as sexy as in years past but the mid first round to day 2 guys will be there in volume. FA wise this is not a good year either. If Anderson plays well at RT this year I could see them going into the 2024 draft knowing that they need to take an OT round 1 or 2 and the value of the OT matching their draft slot.

I tend to think that is precisely the process this year for OT. Didn't like the fits from the draft, the FA market wasn't nearly as appealing for a long term deal, AND the 2024 draft is loaded.

I think BB looked at the WR FA market the same way. Hell the FA class after this year has 6-7 big names on it too.
