From short LF too! And while Maile did make a nifty reception as well as a turn, it was the sauce on that throw that gave him the time to adjust.

This dude is a baseball weapon. He isn't the best player or anything - he is just outstanding amongst a league of some of the most skilled athletes on the planet.

An just when I thought this team would fade into the sunset, an unlikely three-game sweep of the Halos puts the Reds right back into it. Didn't see the two team love coming. It all started out just as a nod to the pretty Reds team at the end of the bar.

While Elly is so toolsy he is going to grab the headlines, Matt McClain has had a really strong season and Reds fans will be quick to tell you he has easily been their best rookie.

Over 85 games he has accumulated 3.9 bWAR, banged out 103 hits, 23 doubles and 15 homers with 13 steals, is slugging .516 and has an OPS+ of 133. Corbin Carroll is pretty much a lock to win NL ROY, but McClain would be a really strong candidate most years.

Yep. Spencer Steer has been more than they probably could have hoped for, as well.

That scene was amazing, although a bit sad once you realize that at that point Ohtani knew that his ACL was damaged and his pitching season was done (others did not yet know, including Elly D obviously).

Our hero has been pretty bad since his first few weeks up, OPS by month:

June: .881
July: .686
August: .663
September: .491

Baseball is hard.

It's not surprising given his high-K issues. Still has all the tools in the world if he can figure that out.

Baseball is hard and the league has adjusted to him. Up to him to make the counter.

He’s going to have to adjust in a major way at the plate. He needs to put the bat on the ball and let his speed take over. Electric player for sure, only 21 and a shortstop. But the hype is out of control. I hope he gets better because it’s good for baseball. On most days he reminds me of Billy Hamilton with more power but less defense.

Bumping for a new season, our hero has been one of the best players in MLB so far with a 1.9 bWAR before tonight, he is up to a .894 OPS after tonight’s virtuoso performance.

Tonight he was 4-4 with a walk, almost singlehandedly beating the Dodgers with 3 runs scored and 4 SBs in just the first 5 innings in what was a 4-0 game through 8 (7-2 final).

Good call on the bump. I watched most of the game today, and he was ridiculous. The walk was after he got hosed on a 3-0 strike call on what should have been ball four, but he didn't get flustered -- took another strike, then protected on the full count, fouling one off, and then drew ball four. Stole 2nd. Stole 3rd. Came in to score on a wild pitch. As excited as we all were last year, he's taken a step up:

Last year through 44 games: .264/.313/.449, 63:12 K:BB. 6 HR, 17 SB.
This year through 44 games: .277/.378/.516, 55:22 K:BB. 9 HR, 30 SB.

He's a ton of fun to watch.

That he is. It is unfortunate that the team has underperformed to date. Everyone cites injuries, but the team went into a collective hitting slump. And the Reds bullpen continues to be an exercise in complete inconsistency. I am beginning to think that there may never be another Hall of Fame closer. It isn't that closer greatness changes from decade to decade, or even year to year anymore, but more like day to day.

I just hope that ELDC does not become the Queen City's version of Mike Trout. (at least in terms of playoff appearances)

Cincy got the full ELDC experience this weekend. 2-4 with a triple and 3 (of the Reds 5) errors on Friday in a win, coincidentally on ELDS Bobblehead Night, otherwise known as the most people in the building since it opened (with the exception of the 2015 All-Star game). 0-3 with a stolen base on Saturday in a loss, and 2-3 with yet another triple, homer, stolen base, in a thrilling loss. The Redlegs are mired in a gaggle of flotsam and jetsam near the last playoff birth in the NL, but there is some excitement.
