Manhattan coach Steve Masiello is expected to formally accept an offer this week to become the next coach at USF, multiple sources told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.
Barring a surprise, he will replace Stan Heath at USF.

And it's official now.  USF is a sleeping giant.  They could become very good fast with the right coach.

Would you mind explaining why you think so (genuinely asking)?  I've never thought of USF as a sleeping giant in basketball and nothing comes to mind immediately that would indicate a fast rise.  I'd love to hear your thoughts.

USF basketball is kind of weird. On the plus side, weather, decent recruiting base, outstanding facilities (including a recently renovated the Sun Dome).

On the negative side, there's no history of success. In 38 D-1 seasons they've only had 15 winning seasons, only four 20-win seasons, and only three NCAA bids. It's been a resume-killer for a couple guys.

They are in a conference now where they aren't buried by 5 or 6 great teams.  The AAC is now manageable to rise up in.  USF has great facilities and administrative support as II indicated.  If they got a guy in there who is a great recruiter, the campus will sell itself once they get big recruits on it.  I think Maisello is that guy.

Anyone else surprised Masiello didn't hold out for a higher profile/more lucrative gig? The offers from major programs would have come, and he had to have received at least some feeler interest from the likes of Wake, BC, etc.

Deal is off. Issues with background check.

I guess the sleeping giant is going back to bed.

This is way bigger than O'Leary. Masiello doesn't have a four-year degree! What a fraud. Typically, these days, you need a Master's to coach at the college level though there are some notable exceptions.

He'll never coach again... well, until he completes his credits.

"While Rutgers was in error when it reported that Eddie Jordan had earned a degree from Rutgers University, neither Rutgers nor the NCAA requires a head coach to hold a baccalaureate degree,"

That's the quote from Rutgers last year.

It's not a requirement, so unless Manhattan makes it a requirement for their school, they could pull what Rutgers pulled. But lying on the resume, and allowing it on the Manhattan's and Louisville's websites, is pretty embarrassing. He also told the players he was leaving.

So can I go back in time and just pretend this post never existed? To quote George Costanza, it would be "like when Superman reversed the rotation of the earth!"

Interesting--Travis Decuire was the choice of many of the recruits and Mike Montgomery.

The best part is that Okoroh is going with him, de-committing from Tenn just one day after committing. Screw Tenn.

Haith was under tremendous heat at Mizzou, a program with very unrealistic expectations, and chances are decent he was going to be fired at the end of next season. Tulsa is paying him more than a mil a season. That said, my post was sort of tongue in cheek.

Haith is a terrible coach and seems to be able to stay one step ahead of the firing squad. In Miami he knew the sanctions were coming.

Great first hire by Haith by bringing aboard Tom Abatemarco. He's a tireless hands-on recruiter who has had a lot of success at NC State under Jimmy V and then with Colorado in two different stints, for which he is most remembered for landing Chauncey Billups.

Mizzou short list appears to be Marshall, Tim Floyd and Kim Anderson.

Obviously Marshall would take 3 million to get him....although Mizzou does have the Walton family to turn to for a big check.

maybe $50k was worth the peace of mind that no better candidates were out there?

Craig Robinson is out at Oregon St. Kind of a weird time to fire someone, but he wasn't very successful. Maybe they have someone lined up.

Not even sure how good of a job this is, they haven't been good in a long time. They haven't been to an NCAA tournament since Gary Payton played there (1990).

I'm not sure there is ever a good time to fire the President's brother-in-law.
