NY starts a series in Texas tonight, would be a good night for Cole to go back to being a reliable ace.

If they can’t fix the pitching, this team is going nowhere in October. So it starts with Cole tonight. Schmidt and Gil have to come back revitalized. Can we trust Rodon? Nestor might end up in the bullpen.

Yanks still trying to piece their Humpty Dumpty pitching rotation back together again after their great fall from grace in June..

Rodon threw a 1-2-3 first inning. Soto got the third out at the wall in right centerfield.

Great job from Rodon. Hope they don't waste it.

It would be great to see that kind of pitching in the playoffs.

Rodon done after 6 dominant innings. 11 Ks, 1 hit (a homer). Totally in command. calm demeanor.

Time for the offense to wake up.

Infield defense fuels Rangers’rally in 8th. DJ boots a grounder to start it and Gleyber fans on a potential DP grounder up the middle. Hill comes in to get two big outs. Yanks lead 4-3 going to ninth. Clay Holmes is getting ready.

Rizzo pinch-hitting for DJ. Supposed to be an off day but DJ is on life support in dugout.

I wonder if Mariano Rivera can stand watching Holmes try to close games.

No control whatsoever. High, low, in the dirt. Single, walk, walk. One out. Matt Blake to the mound.

I was going to say Boone, once October comes around, needs to lift Holmes as soon as he can when he's like this ...

... but that just cost the Yankees first place for tonight. So uh, he needs to do that, NOW.

Well, at least Holmes is consistent. When he gets rattled, he stays rattled.

Late inning defense looking good for the team too. Again.

I checked the score with NY up 4-1 in the 8th when DJ booted the ball to start off the inning, chalk up six runs to my PRD*.

*Personal Run Differential is a term I made up to make my baseball fandom more enjoyable, it is the difference between your team's actual run differential and the runs that you see scored both ways in their games.

Criminal neglect by Cashman not to have addressed this bullpen situation at the trade deadline. I guess he was wait8ng for the injured relievers to get healthy. Ironic that David Robertson was sitt8ng in the Texas bullpen last night. At least he can throw strikes.

If the Red Sox ever figure out my PWL* record, they will never let me in any stadium they are playing in again

Meanwhile Gleyber is playing himself into a QO that he could easily accept (it looks like it will be around $21M).

No Dominguez and on streaming and Sinner/Medvedev at the US Open and I didn’t even turn this one on, add another 8 to my PRD.

The ending was way more interesting than it should have been. Stanton was damn close to getting the tying run up to the plate. Just missed a HR to bring it within 1.

I am boycotting until the Yankees commit to putting their best team on the field. Can’t watch Verdugo anymore. Cashman has to suck it up and admit he made a bad trade.

It wasn’t even a terrible trade, Verdugo hasn’t been good but his D has been fairly solid and NY played great for a while after moving him to cleanup early in the season.

But he was traded for to be a placeholder until Dominguez is ready, and Dominguez is ready. Pull the trigger, Cashman.

I’m still pissed that Verdugo had a big game in Fenway, showboated around the bases, and almost immediately went into a long hitting slump. It’s just personal for me. I don’t like his demeanor.

He definitely has the most punchable face on the team. Won't be sad to see him gone, and hopefully soon.

Bring him up tomorrow and let him hit in Wrigley. One more power hitter changes this lineup dramatically. Of course, .pitching is the problem, not scoring runs.

Has to happen tonight. If Cabrera has options left, and he most certainly does, you may be right. But then you create the awkward moment when Verdugo infects the clubhouse with his me-first attitude.

Just bite the bullet and dump Verdugo. Cabrera plays a decent 3B and can go in the OF if necessary too. The way DJ looks, I'd hate it if Chisholm was DTD and DJ had to cover too many innings there. And iff Dominguez gets banged up, Cabrera can cover LF in an emergency too. He's a lot more useful than Verdugo.

Yep. That’s the smart way but with Cashman, you never know. I wonder if he survives when this season crashes and burns in October. His roster decisions this year have been calamitous.

In his defense, Chisholm seems like an amazing addition at a non-exorbitant price, and holding on to Gleyber seems to have been the right call too.

I think Leiter Jr was a decent move too, but the bullpen needed more help than it got, even beyond that other guy who got DFA'd.

You are very kind about Leiter’s impact. I thought they needed to bid on a closer. Philly got Esteves from Angels and he has been solid.

I think Leiter is talented enough, but I do expect the the impact to be greater over the next two seasons than this one when the coaching staff has more time to work with him. My feelings on the deal are less about the now than the future, but yeah, I agree. The "now" needed more help.
