Ok, they won. But I really don't understand the bullpen today. Assuming that Martin was unavailable, I'm not sure why he doesn't bring in Nick with a 6-2 lead, Wink for the 8th, Jansen for the 9th.
Winck in the sixth is fine, but he was clearly laboring in the 7th. Shoulda had someone warming up in the 8th and brought in after the HR. Probably Bernardino to the lefty Varsho.

The pitch was 6” off the plate. It was good hitting by VGJ.
I phrased it bad by saying “caught”…but the rest of my post I’ll stand by. Way too hittable for a bad ball hitter like Vlad. 0-2 pitch needs to be in the dirt or above the letters.

The 2023 Red Sox are a Tarantino film -- moments of brilliance interspersed with bodies flailing all over the place and dozens of WTF Was That moments
Had to drive my grandson to Logan this afternoon and am only now catching up on the game thread. This post stands out as a perfect description of the spectacle we’ve witnessed so far this season. Bravo.

And why wasn't a lefty brought in for Varsho in the 8th? That's a textbook definition of a place to use a lefty.
Cora baffles me sometimes.

I think 2 things are going on here. First is that cora, often rightly criticized for his "marathon" approach, sees these as must wins. Second is that he only really really trusts 3 relievers, one of whom wasn't available.

It's like veering from hands-off to emotional-impulse managing.

There's a happy medium. What's mystifying is why we don't see more of that happy medium - he's not an idiot.

I went out to the garden as soon as Jansen came in the game. When I got back in, the spouse told me the Sox won, but I made the right decision not to watch. I really AM too old for that agita, unlike the guy in the video posted above. Having read the play by play and this thread, and having seen a little tape, it isn't obvious to me that the problem is Jansen pitching to four rather than three batters. He needs to be better. I do think Bernardino should pitch more often.

It's not about pitching to four batters rather than three, it's about pitching more than one inning, which he has not done once this season. Not once in half a season, and only once all last season.
Getting hot, then cooling down, then getting hot again isn't something that anyone can do just because we may want him to "be better."

Sure. I guess my point is that I have seen him come in, face batters in the ninth, and still pitch poorly. I have also seen him pitch well. I'm just not sure that coming in in the eighth is the killer. But whatever, this team is really missing Schreiber, and I never even hear him mentioned lately. It's as if he died some time ago.

100%. My concern isn't about Jansen pitching to extra batters. It's about warming up, going 100% for 1 or more batters, sitting in the dugout for however long, and then having to get himself back up to 100% for another inning. Not only from an effectiveness in that game standpoint, but from an injury standpoint, as well.

At the risk of beating my own dead horse, my concerns about Cora's bullpen usage mostly stem from the double header against Tampa. In the first game he had Winckowski pitch the 7th inning of a 3 run game, and then used Martin (who I kind of view as the "backup closer" and did back then) in the 8th and Jansen in the 9th. I questioned it immediately, because Winckowski is a guy who is used to going multiple innings, and I didn't see using both Jansen and Martin in what never ended up being a high leverage situation made a lot of sense... save on for the 2nd game.

Of course, he then had to use Jansen again in game 2 (in a tie game), which he blew, letting up 2 runs on 3 hits and a walk.

I think Cora is a good manager for the most part. I get the "marathon not a sprint" mentality, and I don't complain about guys getting days off (and anyone who thinks these guys just sit around because they aren't in the lineup probably don't understand how hard these people work to be as good as they are at their craft). I do think his bullpen management has been a net negative this season, and not an insignificant one, either.

Or maybe he's only a couple of weeks away

Well… it seemed necessary in the moment. I like Tim Hortons. Forgive me?
Agreed. As a proud American, I can only express my respect for the effective leadership Prime Minister Tim Horton has provided Canada with over the last 8 years. Happy Canada Day!

No doubt.i don't call this weekend emotional impulse, though. He's probably right to manage these like this.
Other ones are the issue. (And certainly those other ones are one reason why he has to win these games).
Here we are. These games are more important than they should be. Might as well treat them that way.

Exciting game.
I’m headed West early Sunday for a couple weeks in National Parks.

I am not sure if I’ll be able to post before each game or even at all some days, but I’ll do my best.

I know for sure that I’ll be in the air through most of Sunday’s action.

In case I’m unable to view Sunday’s thread before game time, I hope someone can copy and paste this poem for me.

The haiku trend has worked well thus far so I’ll continue for now.

You really should know Bloom's initials if you're going to post here.
This was a typo, and I was banned for 24 hours for the error. No chance for an explanation. I apologize and definitely won't post here again, that is for sure. I am a little too old for internet forum bans, LOL. Enjoy the rest of the summer folks.

Hello, there. I don't know if you're still reading, but I want to say that you were probably "sacrificed" on the silly theory that it would prompt a Sox comeback. I don't know if that's what happened, but it might have been. Don't take it personally. And by the way, I have no idea what "This isn't an airport" means. Remember, here on Sosh we are many different personalities. Some may clash with you, others may sympathize. Your basic point that Bloom may have to change strategies is by no means controversial. I am convinced that owner Henry has instructed Bloom to proceed as he does, so unless Henry changes his mind, Bloom won't change strategies.

This isn’t an airport means that when you leave a message board there is no need to announce your departure — if you really don’t think it is a place for you just go. That’s how the expression is commonly used. I am a little skeptical of the typo theory. H and C are not near each other and H is the right sound kind of, but it might have just been garden variety ignorance of Bloom’s name.

My thought was that the poster admits to be "too old," which means s/he might be elderly (like me) and heard the H in Chaim in her/his head and hurriedly typed the H.
Thanks for the explanation of the "airport" thing.
