Interestingly, Williams Jerez makes his debut as a pitcher for the GCL Sox. I guess they've given up on him as an outfielder.

Yeah, AmFox quoted it over at SP, but here the Lowell asst gm tweeted about it back in May: https://twitter.com/theboz423/status/469542315480985600

Justin Haley getting the start tonight for the good guys. He's through 2 scoreless IP with a pair of singles -- one by Bryce Harper, which should have an asterisk or something.

Clearly I jinxed him, as Potomac puts up a 4-spot in the b-3rd. Haley now with 5 H, 2 BB, and a 3-run HR to Wilson Ramos.

Steven Wright has put together an impressive little run for Pawtucket-- 30 K/5 BB over 30 IP, and just 23 hits, 6 ER.  Tonight, he went 7 innings, 2 ER, 5 hits, 7 K, 0 BB.  He did give up 2 HR tonight (each a solo shot).  I don't see how there is room for him in Boston, but he is certainly putting together the beginnings of an interesting case.

STORIES

PAWSOX

Game Story

Pawtucket starter Steven Wright pitched seven strong innings and the PawSox sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to a 5-4 victory over the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders Monday night.

The PawSox earned a split of the four-game series with the win.

Wright (2-1) allowed only five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven. The knuckleballer, who permitted two solo home runs, threw 103 pitches. Tommy Layne pitched around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

The PawSox collected six hits against Scranton starter Jeremy Bleich (0-2) in the fifth to erase a 2-0 deficit and score all of their runs.

After a single, walk and bunt single loaded the bases with none out in the fifth, Bleich allowed back-to-back RBI singles to Mookie Betts and Mike McCoy to tie the game at 2. Travis Shaw then grounded out, but the go-ahead run crossed the plate on the play.

Ryan Roberts capped the rally with a two-out, two-run double that scored Betts and McCoy to make it 5-2. Reliever Drake Britton gave up two runs in the eighth but escaped further damage with a double play groundout and a strikeout.
SEADOGS

Game Story

The Portland Sea Dogs became the first team in professional baseball to reach 50 wins, and they still have a week to go before July.

Portland (50-26) beat the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 3-2 on Monday night before 4,395 at Hadlock Field. The Fisher Cats dropped to 31-44.

Luis Diaz, in his Hadlock Field debut, held New Hampshire to seven hits and one run over eight innings.

Sean Coyle and Deven Marrero homered for Portland. Heiker Meneses singled in a run.

Coyle, the 5-foot-8 second baseman, bats cleanup for Portland and showed his power, leading off the second inning. Coyle swatted a high fastball over the wall in right- center for his eighth home run, second on the team to Blake Swihart’s nine.

David Chester, Keury De La Cruz and Meneses added singles in the inning for a 2-1 lead.

Marrero led off the third with a home run to left-center. It was his fourth of the season.

Diaz (2-0), called up to the Sea Dogs last week from Salem, needed only 83 pitches in eight innings. He struck out four and walked two.

New Hampshire scored one in the second inning on a Jonathan Jones single and Matt Newman RBI double.

Miguel Celestino relieved in the ninth and the game got interesting. With one out, Jones homered and Newman tripled. But the next two Fisher Cats grounded out and Celestine had his sixth save.
Luis Diaz

Pedro Martinez shook hands with Luis Diaz in the Portland Sea Dogs’ clubhouse and it was hard to tell who looked happier.

As Martinez walked out the door, he was still beaming.

“Outstanding. Outstanding. I’m very proud,” said Martinez, the former Red Sox great who now works with Boston’s minor league pitchers.

Diaz, 22, had just pitched his first game at Hadlock Field and only his second in Double-A, and he showed the poise of a veteran, lasting eight innings, holding the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to one run on seven hits and two walks Monday night. He struck out two.

“He’s a professional,” said catcher Blake Swihart. “Established the strike zone early and getting those hitters chasing.”

Diaz needed only 83 pitches (56 strikes), to improve to 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA.

He wisely has listened to Martinez’s advice.

“He told me to focus and throw my fastball for a first-pitch strike,” Diaz said.

Diaz signed with the Red Sox in 2008 as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela. His breakout season came last year in low Class A Greenville (7-4, 2.05).

“I became consistent,” Diaz said. “You have to throw down in the zone for strikes.”

Diaz was promoted to advanced Class A Salem last August and helped the team on its championship run.

“He was very impressive,” said Sea Dogs Manager Billy McMillon, who managed Salem last year. “He throws a lot of strikes and that’s what you like to see.”

When Diaz arrived in Salem last year, he replaced Mickey Pena, who was promoted to Portland. Last week Diaz replaced Pena again after Pena was suspended for 100 games for a third positive test for drug abuse.

Diaz has allowed a total of eight hits and two runs in two starts. His fastball was consistently hitting 92-93 mph, and his curve and change-up produced swings and misses.
SALEM

Game Story

The Potomac Nations put up a four spot in the bottom of the third inning en route to a 5-2 win over the Salem Red Sox at Pfitzner Stadium Monday night. The win was the P-Nats sixth straight over the Red Sox this season, all of them in Woodbridge.

Dakota Bacus was very good in the victory. Despite surrendering eight hits, Bacus allowed just one Salem run to score, without a walk and two strikeouts. Justin Haley was solid for five of his six innings, but a four run third was his downfall. Haley picked up his third loss of the season, allowing eight hits and five runs in his six frames of work.

The Red Sox got out to a lead in the second inning for a second consecutive night. Jantzen Witte led of the frame with a single. He moved up to second on a ground out by Matt Gedman and scored on an RBI single by Mario Martinez. Martinez became the first Red Sox to reach 40 RBIs on the season.

But once again, the P-Nats struck back and took the lead in the bottom of the third. Will Piwnica-Worms led off with a double. A single by Tony Renda drove home the tying run. Then a walk to Bryce Harper put two on for Wilson Ramos, who drove one right down the right field line over the wall for a three run shot and a 4-1 P-Nats lead.

Harper finished 1-1 with a walk and a run before ending his rehab appearance after three innings. Ramos caught all nine innings, going 3-4, with a run and three RBIs.

The P-Nats added a fifth run off Haley in the fourth. Randolph Oduber scored after his lead-off double, driven in on a Piwnica-Worms single.

The game would stay 5-1 until the top of the eight. Matty Johnson led off with a triple on a ball over the head of Oscar Tejeda in left field. Then after a walk to Reed Gragnani, and two outs, a throwing error by Khayyan Norfork allowed Carson Blair to reach and Johnson to score to cut the lead to 5-2.
DRIVE

Game Story

Greenville put up 20 hits for the second time in four days as the Drive defeated Asheville 14-6 Monday night at historic McCormick Field.

Greenville, which had 20 hits in a 21-1 win over Savannah Friday, used a six-run third inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead then put the game out of reach with a five-run sixth inning.

Batting seventh, All-Star catcher Jake Romanski led the Drive’s onslaught as he went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs. Ninth-place hitter Aneudis Peralta went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

Every Greenville starter had at least one hit, and seven had at least two.

Drive starting pitcher Daniel McGrath allowed one run on four hits in 61/3 innings to collect the win. McGrath (3-3) had one walk and five strikeouts.
SPINNERS

Game Story

On a day when the top of the Lowell Spinners line-up had 1,869 combined games of Major League experience atop the line-up, it was the Connecticut Tigers whose offense cruised to a 15-hit 11-3 win over the Spinners Monday night at LeLacheur Park.

The two big leaguers, Shane Victorino and Andres Torres, combined to go 0-for-7 atop the line-up.

Connecticut (4-7) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, the first earned runs allowed by Jason Garcia during the 2014 season. They would tack on two additional runs in the fifth inning, chasing Garcia from the game and putting the Spinners in a 5-0 hole.

Lowell (5-6) would pull within three in the fourth inning getting on the board with back-to-back doubles from Sam Travis and Jordan Betts. After two strikeouts, Mike Meyers and Raymel Flores singled to score Betts and bring the score to 5-2.

The Tigers took back one run in the fifth inning but the Spinners got that run back in the sixth on a solo home run by Betts, his third of the season, all at LeLacheur Park.

It was all Tigers from that point however as Connecticut as the Tigers scored two in the seventh and three in the ninth en route to an 11-3 win.

Victorino, making a one-game pit stop in Lowell as he continues his rehab from a hamstring injury, popped out in his first at-bat, grounded out in the third inning and flew out to deep left-center in his third and final at-bat. He's scheduled to head to Pawtucket Tuesday night.

Travis and Betts paced the offense, each with two-hit games. Betts' three home runs this season at LeLacheur Park pull him within two of the 2013 squad's total output at home.

Garcia (0-1, 3.00) allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits and a walk, striking out six in three innings. Oscar Perez followed, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out two over three innings. Ellis Jimenez closed out the game with two innings, allowing three runs on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Seriously, I need more Mookie in my life.  Last night was his sixth multi-hit game in the last 10.  Triple slash up to .321/.402/.457.  Steamer's MLB projection of his triple slash is up to .277/.338/.403.  I know there's a potentially huge gap in the kind of D he can play in center vs. JBJ, but 150+ points of OPS has to matter for something, right?  It's not like you couldn't keep JBJ up as a defensive option either.

ha!  perhaps Dan Butler or Christian Vazquez can start hitting and displace AJP.  yes, many ifs here....
