Lowell Spinners Game Story

Just 12 hours after the conclusion of Monday's heartbreaking defeat, the Lowell Spinners avenged the loss to salvage a series split with a 2-1 win over the Tri-City ValleyCats Tuesday morning in Troy. Willie Ethington saved the day for the Spinners, allowing just one run on six hits in 4.1 innings of long-relief.

With a 10am start for Education Day at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, the Spinners got an early start on scoring, jumping out to a second inning lead. Nick Moore was the catalyst, doubling with one out and stealing third base. An error by JD Davis at third allowed Moore to score, giving the Spinners a 1-0 lead.

Lowell (2-3) would add to the lead in the top half of the fourth inning. Mauricio Dubon singled to lead off the inning, advancing to second on a wild pitch. Nick Longhi followed with an RBI single to put the Spinners ahead, 2-0.

After cruising through the first three-innings, Spinners' starter Dioscar Romero ran into trouble in the fourth. After a lead-off walk and wild pitch put AJ Reed at second, Romero walked Nick Tanielu putting runners on first and second with no out. Romero induced a double play, advancing Reed to third. At this point Ethington came into the game, getting Ariel Ovando to pop out to end the inning.

Tri-City (3-2) was able to get to Ethington for a run in the sixth inning. After back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, Tanielu attempted to bunt his way on but Moore made the play while the runners advanced into scoring position. After a strikeout, Mott Hyde delivered a run-scoring double, to pull the ValleyCats within one, 2-1.

That was as close as they would get however, as Ethington and Pinales closed out the win with three scoreless innings for a 2-1 final.

Offensively the Spinners made the most of the four hits by using small ball and taking advantage of two ValleyCats errors. Longhi, Dubon and Danny Bethea each singled, while Moore doubled and added a stolen base. Deiner Lopez added his team leading third stolen base as well.
