For the sake of full information, his contract with the Sox included a vesting option for 2025 if he finished in the top 10 in 2024 AL Cy Young voting and was not on the IL at the end of the season.
If both of those things happen with Atltanta either the Sox were extremely unlucky with Sale the last few years or there was something seriously wrong with their training/physical systems vs the Braves..

I'd chalk it all up to luck. The Braves of course figured that since he looked OK at the end of 2023 it was worth the gamble.

It's a well-known fact that when come-backers hit those finely-toned ATL pitchers, the baseballs shatter. As opposed to the bones.

That vesting option was also a team option that they could have picked up anyway. That also ignores that they could have extended him like the Braves did and gotten him to lower his AAV.

Yeah, he was under control for 2025. It was basically a 2/47 deal at the point we traded him. Which we paid $17 million to do. The deal had finally gotten good -- especially if you consider the Giolito deal that replaced it. But whatever. We got Grissom and it's about him now.

It should be ignored. To fairly evaluate any trade, you compare what was actually traded at the time.
