Opening Day for Baltimore, 3:05 start. Two struggling young starters on the mound. Dean Kremer gave up 5 runs in 3 innings at Fenway in his first start. Clarke Schmidt looked good for one inning in a loss to the Giants. He went 3.1 innings, allowing 3 runs on a couple long balls.
Anthony Volpe could use a good road series as he struggled at the plate and in the field in front of the home fans. Baltimore has a rookie of the year candidate in third baseman Gunnar Henderson, who is hitting .125 in 16 ABs. It’s early.
Speaking of struggling, Josh Donaldson nursing a tender hammy already.

The three guys almost everyone wanted dumped this winter, Donaldson/Hicks/IKF, are a collective 2 for 33 so far, so yeah, any lineup without any of them is nice.

Franchy probably sucks too but at least it is a new brand of suck for the NY fan base. :)

Five minutes ago in my chat room after the Cabrera single, I posted:

"need a walk and a franchy bomb here"

Schmidt only still in here to try to boost his confidence, but he has nothing, please take him out.

Schmidt may have pitched his way back to Scranton. He’s fooling nobody.
I don't disagree but they don't have a fifth starter then really. Ryan Weber? Randy Vazquez? Severino and Rodon are maybe a few weeks away but you need to get there somehow.

Judge has been bad at the plate so far today, but saved a run there with a diving catch in the gap, he is just so good.

Nice rally for NY to go up 5-4, aided by a very dubious 3-2 ball four call to Gleyber.

IKF needs to get this run in now, on third and one out.

Volpe looking overmatched again, hope NY doesn't regret leaving that run out there.

Should have pitched around Rutschman, not a second guess but ah well.

5-5 after 6.

Let’s see if they can win a close game on the road in April. 3 quick outs in top of 7th. Michael Kay got very excited over Rizzo’s liner to right.

Then he wild-pitches in a run. And walks Hays as Boone looks on, frowning, arms crossed. Jimmy might be packing his bags tonight.

Don't think Cordero is going anywhere, he has looked awesome before this. It has been a terrible inning though.

Stanton doubles, Gleyber singles. Whether they win or not, you like to see some resiliency in a team.

Cabrera singles in Stanton. Nobody out. No idea if Orioles have a bullpen. They did suck in Fenway.

Volpe/DJ/Judge/Rizzo just 2-14 combined today with no damage done, gonna need a rally from them to steal this one.

Wandy schooled Henderson to end the 8th. The kid will look at video and wonder how that happened. Wandy makes big pitches in big situations.

Fun game.

Interesting game. Orioles lost a 4-0 lead but came back to lead, and then hang on. That’s a big win for an improving young team in its home opener.

Schmidt could only get 10 outs. He needs to learn how to pitch in the minors. Not here. Still like him but he’s not ready. injuries to 3 starters forced him into the rotation. There’s no blame in this. Injuries force younger players into the lineup and it’s often too soon.

Hmm, Terry started a game thread and not a series thread, so since NY lost, someone else who is not me or @Wingack or @terrynever should start a series thread for the final two games of this series. If NY goes 2-0, you keep going, otherwise someone else starts the next series. @Murderer's Crow ? @ThePrideofShiner ? @Brand Name ? Everyone knows you need a lot of solid SPs to get through a long long season... :)

Brito up and starting today, Donaldson presumably to the IL but not official yet, but they still need two more accompanying moves, a position player up and a pitcher down so they don't have more than 13 pitchers, presumably Peraza up and Hamilton down.

Huh:

Prior to tonight’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:

• Recalled RHP Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
• Placed INF Josh Donaldson on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to 4/6) with a right hamstring strain.
• Placed RHP Jonathan Loáisiga on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 4/6) with right elbow inflammation.
• Signed OF Willie Calhoun to a Major League contract and selected him to active roster.
• Transferred RHP Tommy Kahnle to the 60-day injured list.
