PFN mock draft simulator is live for 2024: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/mockdraft

My first crack at it, probably need a CB given the issues with JCJ and Jack Jones but felt pretty good about my choices otherwise.

5. Olumuyiwa Fashanu, OT Penn State
36. Michael Penix Jr., QB Washington
67. Xavier Legette, WR South Carolina
101. Chris Braswell, EDGE Alabama
132. Blake Fisher, OT Notre Dame
163. Joshua Farmer, FT Florida State
173. Jake Briningstool, TE Clemson
195. Ray Davis, RB Kentucky

Opted for Harrison over a tackle and then Bo Nix was the only QB available. Penix and Maye went to the Lions and Cardinals respectively, and I wasn't going to draft Penix at 5.

73573

I swapped #67 to the Browns for picks 85, 130, and 160. I traded for 87 and 215 from the Cowboys and gave up 101 and 132.

I don’t love Nix. He rarely seems to set his feet on his throws and some of his best plays have had even more incredible catches on the other side of the throw. In interviews he also come across as…a little cocky? Almost like he enjoys being BMOC more than anything else. I don’t know, for whatever completely subjective and irrational reason he screams bust to me.

Still no offensive tackles. Must have tackles.

Love the first two rounds though.

If people want to do mocks, should probably just start a new thread in the draft subforum. We have one every year, though usually not until the season is over but well...

Nix is like 37 years old. Staying in college seems his jam (he will be 24 in Feb 2024).
It seems Oline or stud WR early followed by solid qb later seems like a good option.

Better yet, find an obscure winner in round 6 and go from there.

Having WAY too much fun with this simulator. In this one I accepted a bunch of trades down after making sure I had my guy at #5.

73583

Got my QB, got three quality SEC WR, got three OT, and three corners, plus one good edge player who will replace Uche. I figure with 11 guys picked, with that many at key spots SOME of them should hit.

Of course there's probably not a single guy in this group that will actually end up on the Pats in real life. LOL

Seconded. Rather we keep this thread for actual information about pick.

I was able to get Fashanu at 5 and Penix at 29, by trading 36/101 and next year's 3rd rounder to Detroit.

Probably got fleeced, but I think there is a LOT of potential trading that the Pats can do with that 36 to get back into the 1st round and grab a QB. Right now, of the last 10 picks in the 1st round, there are only two teams (Detroit and Seattle) that might even be in the market for a 1st round QB. Plenty of teams in the 23-32 range are set at QB and will likely be interested in stockpiling picks.

Of course, Bill trading up to get into the 1st round for an offensive player is Haley's Comet type shit.

Given the value of finding a cost-controlled QB in draft, I will be shocked if they don't go after one of the names we've been discussing. The problem once again is that there are no guarantees and we may well repeat the cycle we saw with Jones where you simply won't know what you have until you've seen them play against NFL speed and schemes. And at the end, you may have to find another QB.

Also, if they draft another young QB, we will likely have to endure a lot of the same growing pains we had with Mac. Unlike Jones, hopefully, there will be enough sick plays/throws to dream on.

I've been toying with these almost every day since Week 4, lol.

I alternate between PFN, NFLMockDraftDatabase, & PFF. I used to love PFF, but basically everything is paid now except for a generic 3-round draft with no grades nor trades.

Here's my NFLMDD one for today, with the 1st 3 picks all sons of great players:

Wait! Two of the QB prospects are named Penix and Bo Nix?
Hopefully we avoid the "Nix" in the draft. Penix has a lengthy injury history, Bo I'm just not impressed with and both are older than CJ Stroud and will be 24 when they are drafted, they are basically men playing vs. boys. I'd prefer a QB who is still developing especially a team that isn't quite ready to compete yet. Nix is fine if you are looking to compete right away but I think they both have limited ceilings though Penix has the higher ceiling he also has a lot more injury risk.
Assuming we miss out on Caleb/Maye I'd rather take a developmental QB like Dart or Ewers who are age appropriate than an overaged prospect.

Is he coming out or transferring? I know he shut down some rumors, but that may change after he starts to get info on his draft projections.
Not sure yet, but someone I'm keeping my eye on. I don't imagine he'll have the incentive of that sweet, sweet NIL money that Sanders is making to keep him in school though. Transferring may make some sense if he doesn't think he'll go in the first couple rounds.

Tankathon has us taking JJ McCarthy, QB from Michigan, in the 2nd. #24 on their board. Any input on him?

Bowers in the first and Brian Thomas, LSU WR in the 3rd.
I said it earlier, McCarthy is becoming my man crush. I just like almost everything he does, but it's really hard to get a read on him right now given that they are just decapitating their opponents, and not throwing a ton. But aside from one bad game against Bowling Green this year, dude hasn't made many mistakes at all.

He's got Penn State next, and then Ohio State two weeks later. I'll be watching both very, very intently. Last year, he was great against OSU, not so great against PSU.

And of course, I have a thing for Michigan QB"s in New England, so there's that.

Going to look at this as a 2 year rebuild. Let Mac play his year 4, but give him better weapons. If he fails again, then look for a top line QB in 2025. This draft is deep with WR and OT so I doubled up there. Couldn't resist a TE from Iowa and took a flyer on the Georgia QB as a final pick.
Traded 36 + 101 to LAR for 38 + 70 and traded 163 to the Titans for 169 + 224.

If the Patriots are drafting where projected I don't think they have a shot at Polk but I feel this guy would have a lot of fans in NE. He is capable of making tough, contested catches and taking punishment.

It's possible that Marvin Harrison Jr will go fifth? I find that hard to believe. The Buckeyes QB is sort of terrible and yet Marvin keeps making plays. Every game he plays he looks like the best player on the field by far.

Man, I thought I started doing mocks too early last year (the thread started in March).

These are all going to be terrible because it's way too early for the pre-rankings to be any good but:

PFF 3 round:
73620

PFN 7 rd.
73621

MDD 7rd.

I really doubt it. Basically the case for it would be.... the 2 QBs and some combination of 2 players out of the top 2 tackles and top edge.... but I still don't buy it. I think Harrison and the QBs all go top 3.

Mocks this early usually have 10-15-20 guys identified for the first round but NO ONE had Darnell Wright as a first round prospect, for example, until much later in the process. I think I might have been the first person in the draft community to have Darnell Wright over Broderick Jones. Not to toot my own horn but I was getting Darnell Wright in the 6th round in December mocks. The draft community hasn't caught up yet. I didn't even get to look at him until December of last year so there are likely a lot of (at least a handful or two) guys who are going to be in play rounds 1-2 that we aren't talking about yet.

yeah, even just a few months, I know in previous threads we start them in March for an end of April draft and you see guys go from day 3 to day 1.

Edit- first post of last year's thread included (https://sonsofsamhorn.net/index.php?threads/2023-mocks.38956/)
Wright going 46 (he went 10)
Campbell going 87 (he went 18)
Schoonmaker going 135 (he went 58)
Wilson going 163 (went 94)
Moody going 258 (went 99)

It seems like this is almost set in stone. Maybe one of them gets to 4 and Fashanu goes 3...but I just can't imagine any of Williams, Maye or MHJ making it to 5.

  • 69.
    Jordan Morgan

Did one a few minutes ago. Maye/Caleb/Fashanu/Dallas Turner went 1-4, so I went

Harrison Jr.
Graham Barton OT Duke
Jayden Daniels QB LSU

i could live with that.

Right or wrong, if the Pats have a chance at MHJ with the top 2 QBs off the board and they pass, there will be riots.
If that's the scenario, the Pats would 100% be able to trade back.

I wouldn't want them to not draft MHJ, but they absolutely would have suitors.

If the Pats go Fashanu over MHJ, that dude better be the best receiver in the history of the tackle eligible play.

Unfortunately, no idea who would throw it to him.

Using PFN

Traded down to 5, picking up CHIs 2025 1st

5 MHJ
34 Daniels
67 LB Hopper Missouri

Couldn't get the image up. I suspect it'll take CHIs 2025 1st and the 2nd to actually get high enough to take Daniels.

I can get one of the 5-6 top QBs, MHJ, and two decent OTs in every permutation just about. After that, have been sprinkling in defensive players by BPA and occasionally a TE. Even got the BC guard once in the late 6th.

CD is probably right that the QBs worth having end up in the first round at the end of the day, and I'd be really surprised in Williams/MHJ aren't 1/2. But it's fun to dream on MHJ and Daniels and giving them some OT help.
