Let's put some respect on the name of Dyche. Everton are the form team, what a turnaround. They've gone from having the collective goal mouth yips to being relatively free scoring. No idea what contract Dyche is on but he's earned a new deal if he's not already had one.

Agreed. Maybe he deserves a write up in The Special Ones Thread. I hadn't realized until this weekend's build up to the Burnley match just how far he had taken that franchise in his 10-year run. And it seems like their ownership made an impetuous decision to let him go that may now regret to some extent, although it looks they are in good hands with Kompany, as long as he stays there.

The new contract may be a bit premature only because the current uncertainties regarding ownership and EPL survival have not been fully resolved just yet. The recent run of good form has made me very confident that Everton will stay up even if the points deduction remains in place. EPL survival is one of the last hurdles to closing the sale to the new owners. At that point, they can address Dyche's contract status in order to minimize the possibility that he is poached by one of the top clubs that play musical chairs with their manager's seat.

Amazing job so far this season. He and Emery should be the top two candidates for manager of the year.

This clip that came across my twitter feed today really won me over as well.

I've seen that clip and several others where Dyche shows us he's a proper renaissance man. The way he says 'Chana, i believe it's called' and the way he explains and justifies the virtues of the oil at the top of the curry. People think Dyche is a chips and curry sauce man and manager, a meat a potatoes, pies and peas man and manager. They couldn't be more wrong.

Have you seen the press conference clip where a journalist asks him an out of the box, non football question and instead of moving swiftly along Dyche leans into it and embraces the left field topic and you get five minutes of glorious Dyche chat . I can't find it, but this one is gold. "Are you going out tonight? A few beers? Decent"

I am a gushing Dyche fanboy.

Wholeheartedly concur that he gets unfairly written off as a blood-and-guts, 442, Route 1 English (Yorkie) manager. There is enough of that to make it fair, but lots of subtlety too.

Everton are a joy to watch right now. It is the spirit that led me to the club when I first started watching footy. They compete for 90 minutes, they clearly enjoy playing for each other, and they have capabilities in all facets of the game. Calvert-Lewin has blown a sitter and been robbed in the last couple of matches, he's still getting subbed off for the hulking Beto (Mrs O's new fave) at the 75 minute mark, but his presence as the target man makes the whole side purr. Harrison and McNeil are good wingers. After having been banished from most matchday squads by Lampard, Doucoure has been the cog of the whole attack. He is lakcking in silky quality - puts many shots into Row Z, and passes go astray - but since Dyche took over he leads ALL PL midfielders in non-penalty goals, which is nothing short of astounding. He is among the league leaders in meters covered. He is not the conventional string pulling, silky passing No. 10, but he busts his ass to get into the right place to make plays. James Garner has been quietly excellent alongside Gana/Amadou Onana as a double pivot. Onana has had minor injuries and has not always played up to his physical gifts but he has turned it on - his goal against Burnley was magnificent. Mykolenko was always a decent defensive fullback, but was not good going forward. He has bulked up and raised his game. Not only is he a shutdown LB, doing a job against the likes of Salah, Saka, and Bowen, he's become a very good two-way player - the most improved in the squad under dyche. Branthwaite is a genuine stud, would be RoY in an American sports league, with Tarko they are a dominant CB pair.

4 wins in a row, 8 goals, 0 conceded. Haven't had four clean sheet wins in a row since under Moyes in the early 00's.

RB has been the problem spot. Patterson is young, raw, and has had multiple injuries. Coleman is old, and has had multiple injuries. Young is even older than that, and has been poor. I'd like to see Patterson get the job under Coleman's tutelage.

The two problems most fans have had with Dyche have been his irrational love of Young (with whom he actually played at Watford, in the same back four, a generation ago), and his refusal to make subs. But no obsessive fan is ever 100% happy with his team's manager, as a friend once said.

The 10 point penalty has galvanized the club, the fans, everyone. The poisonous stuff with the board, the owner, etc has been laid aside. Bill Kenwright was eulogized yesterday at Liverpool's massive cathedral, which enabled the club and the community to give him his proper due as one who loved the club, and some of the nastier parts of his late tenure can be swept under the rug. The sale to 777 is on thin ice, 777 seems dicey, but I'd have to think that the club is making itself a more attractive proposition by the day if 777 falls through.

League Cup today against Fulham. Goodison under the lights. It will be rocking.

So yeah, big love for the big bald ginger.

It was terrible. Fulham were shooting first. Both sides had converted the first four penalties. Pickford made a save on the Fulham fifth. Toffees move on if Onana converts.

He's a massive talent but immature sometimes. Naive. That's not the PK of a ruthless competitor. It's the PK of a kid who's not quite sure what he's doing out there.

Makeshift squad today with Mykolenko and Doucoure nursing minor injuries and not being able to tough it through the fixture congestion.

Toffees' streak of 5W 1D 1L in the league has coincided with a run of good health, unsurprisingly. But the squad is painfully thin. They're having to make up the numbers for the bench with tight-end shirt numbers from the academy, and sometimes 2 GK on the bench

Some appreciation for the undervalued Abdoulaye Doucoure. No coincidence whatsoever that Everton’s three game skid in the league had coincided with his absence with a hammy pull. He’s prone for one or two of those a season, unsurprisingly since he is always among the league leaders of kM covered.

He is not a silky smooth footballer. He has a leaden touch sometimes. He has been known to react to an open goal by blasting into Row Z. Which makes these numbers astonishing .

FA Cup action tonight at Selhurst Park. Doucoure is back training with the first team butDyche was noncommittal as to whether he’d play. I’d rather not risk it. The run to the QF of the League Cup generated a lot of good feeling around the club and the miserable penalty loss to Fulham punctured the ballon a bit. So I get wanting to keep going in the cup. But. Without the -10 we’re comfortable in mid table and not worried about relegation. We will see.

just wanted to give the man his due- he is the straw that stirs the drink for the Toffees

Good player, even with his limitations. Any prem club (sans City) would benefit from his presence.
Yes exactly. Some have faulted him for who he is not and what he can’t do. I love his heart.

Lampard had no use for him and gave up on him. Not smooth enough. There was a picture of Doucs sitting dejectedly in a ball in pre game warmups. Some weeks he didn’t ev make the squad. Dyche promptly put him in the middle of everything, in a 4-4-1-1 with two wingers and Doucoure playing just off the striker.

Kind of tells you everything you need re Lampard and Dyche.

Just read that Doucoure turned down the Mali call up to AFCON. Wow.

This is the most talented Mali squad ever by a good deal - they have a real chance to make a run in this tournament. I wonder if there’s some history between Doucoure and the FA? He was born in France and came up through Les Blues youth system, but switched to Mali in 2022. Seems like this is exactly the reason you’d make that switch - to play in a major tournament.

In any case, huge for Everton.

That's been rumored for a while.

He grew up in France and was always trying to get into the French first team. It's not really putting him down to say that he's not quite at that level, right?

He hasn't played much for Mali and he doesn't appear to care that much, unlike Salah, or, say, Idrissa Gana Gueye and Iwobi, mainstays for Senegal and Nigeria, respectively.

Whereas he's very publicly passionate about the club.

Especially with his recurring hamstring issues, I'm happy but not surprised he's sitting it out.

I edited to add a little more while you were typing. But yeah, just surprising because it would seem that playing in major tournaments like AFCON is the reason you’d make the switch. But it is great for Everton.

And Mali should have a great chance at WC qualification in the expanded field. There’s a lot of talent that will be prime aged for qualifying.

Maybe he wasn’t guaranteed to be in the 1st 11 and didn’t want to sit on the bench for a month?

Mali does have a stacked central midfield with Haidara (Leipzig), Bissouma (Spurs), and Cheick Doucoure (Palace). But with the latter out with an ACL tear, I’d expect Everton Doucoure to be a key cog. But c’est la vie, as he might say.

The PL has again referred Everton for prosecution for a breach of PSR.

This is not an assessment of penalty, this is the indictment

For a period already covered by the decision already rendered which resulted in the -10 (currently under appeal)

these fuckers couldn’t be more corrupt if they tried.

The guy I referred to yesterday insists that this is pre-adjustments and once those are taken into account the club is not in breach.

the club also believes that the arguments in the merits which will cause it to prevail on appeal will apply here.

But sweet jumping Christ on a pogo stick, man. Shouldn’t the double jeopardy be enough not to charge this?

Everton social media is ablaze this morning with clips from the appearance of PL chief exec Richard Masters before a hearing of Parliament’s Select Committee for Culture Media & Sport.

Everton super fan Julie made the trip from Merseyside to sit behind him and punctuate his remarks with eye rolls etc.

More pertinently - and this is what’s getting the most play, I’ve seen it 15 times already- he refers to Forest and Everton as “small clubs”:

oh. okay then.

Obviously I think this is nonsense and that FFP has been turkeys in favor of thanksgiving from the outset but I’m absolutely baffled (as a City fan) how often Everton fans are screaming that the whole process is biased and corrupt and that the FA moved the goalposts on them while simultaneously lamenting that City aren’t being punished. I guess I had some shred of hope that Everton fans would see what City fans have been complaining about from the outset but it appears that there won’t be a bridge there after all.

https://www.fotmob.com/news/b835nlns2n9w1qmm1llirs24c-Everton-fan-representative-says-Premier-League-risks-losing-trust-of-supporters

On the merits, it just seems ridiculously punitive to punish twice for overlapping accounts especially in a scenario where the charges for the first set didn’t come until it was far too late to take any drastic action. But the central problem here remains that there’s nothing fair about financial fair play and stopping a club like Everton from being able to invest so that clubs (like mine, now)at the top can continue to feast annually on that sweet CL cash is just not going to produce any outcomes anyone should be OK with. Implementation of financial rules is always a tricky proposition and it becomes a cat and mouse game of finding the limits that is within the law but the implementation of Premier league FFP just wasn’t done well enough and the process hasn’t been clear and predictable enough for the clubs to not have a few issues crop up. That was all reasonably anticipated and there should have been remediation processes designed to give clubs better clarification so they could work with the league to avoid this kind of mess

I’m willing to believe that charges against City are unfair for this reason or that but that doesn’t change the unfairness of what Everton have suffered for one charge, after cooperating, whereas City have successfully fended off consequences for 6 years for 115 charges and massive turnover.

Everton, who admitted to the breach, said they are "satisfied" with the reduction.
A Premier League statement read: "Everton FC appealed the sanction imposed against it on nine grounds, each of which related to the sanction rather than the fact of the breach."

A three-person appeal board concluded that the independent commission which imposed the 10-point ban "made legal errors" on two grounds.
It said the commission was "wrong" to punish Everton for being "less than frank" over what it told the Premier League about its new stadium debt.

The appeal board also said the commission was "wrong not to take into account available benchmarks" and that a six-point sanction was "broadly in line" with English Football League guidelines.

So first time back in this thread since my Lenten hiatus.

Dyche-ball has been sullen and dull. 13(?) winless, albeit with enough draws to keep above the drop zone. Performances just good enough so as not to lose hope entirely, defense legitimately good, but horrendous failures in front of goal. Trailing xG by an absurd margin.

This second penalty is just preposterous. They are literally making it up as they go.

Burley snd Sheffield Utd are definitely down so it looks like Luton, Everton, Forest, and maybe Brentford for the last spot.

Not as bad as this: Sheffield United to be deducted two points in the club’s ‘next season in EFL’ - The Athletic

Maybe EFL will pre-emptively deduct points from Everton or City whenever they get relegated

whether that helps Everton in the long run is a magic 8 ball question.

It’s the most predictable thing in the world that after having banged Everton and Forest to widespread derision they’re now looking to change the rules before Chelsea and City get their turn in the dock.

Thread title changed to reflect the chant in the stands at Goodison last night. Petty, sure, but in a truly dreadful season and decade, the result was shocking enough, but the performance even moreso. Everton played with joy, committment, grit... pick your superlative. The pessimism and tension that has been so evident in the players' body language all season- you had to look at the red shirts on the pitch for that.

Just mind-blowing. Where has this team been all year?

Also not on my bingo card: after Sean Dyche opined on a British music podcast that he thought Green Day were great live, we were treated to two surreal posts by Billie Joe Armstrong, before and after the game:
