Three Super Bowls aren't enough, they're demanding $500 million in public money.

They'll almost certainly get it, but it's outrageous.

I hate give him credit for anything, but Tom Finneran was absolutely right to call Bob Kraft's bluff. There was a real risk of the team leaving, and I can't imagine how much it would have sucked to see them leave and then go on the Brady era tear, but I don't think it was ever happening once Kraft bought the team.

Good. Let them leave for Orlando, St Louis or Portland. Then, if they ever get close in super bowls to us (shudder) we can put asterisks on one metro area where they played or the other.

Aren't the people of KC also being asked to fund a Royals stadium too?

It would be interesting to see if the timing works against them here. The standard “we need to renovate the stadium to stay competitive” arguments don’t really apply when they’ve been the most successful team over the last 5 years, have the best QB locked up long term and FA’s are taking less money to play with Mahomes. Even a modest tax increase might be a tough sell with inflation still impacting things.

There’s no slam dunk relocation site now that LA and Vegas have been taken off the board:

St. Louis has an NFL caliber stadium, but it’s city owned and they’ll likely drive a very hard bargain given how Kroenke ditched town.

Portland has a small MLS stadium; playing up the road in Eugene is an option for a few years.

Orlando has the Citrus Bowl, but that would likely require just as many renovations as Arrowhead on top of the relocation fee. The other AFC West teams won’t be jazzed about the prospect of 3 additional trips to the opposite coast if there’s no division realignment (nor the Chiefs players and coaches). Also, the Bucs could possibly claim territorial rights over Orlando given that it’s close to the 75 mile exclusivity limit.

San Antonio or Austin might be the best options on paper, but neither the Cowboys or Texans would be enthused about a new team nearby and Jerry Jones holds a lot of sway.

I wonder how many other times the Hunt family has demanded more taxes? Especially if those taxes primarily went to helping people other then them.

They're not moving. Pure bluff. It's not like it's a national brand team, like the Steelers and Cowboys and Raiders. They are not going to draw outside of that area, certainly not after Mahomes retires.

Only place where they could, move, I guess, is Fayetteville or somewhere in Iowa (Omaha, DM, IC) based on fandom, but markets too small.

Theory: Instead of public money, they should raise their $500 million by passing the hat among player girlfriends.

Brittany just bought a minority share in the Current. I doubt the ROI is that quick for her to reinvest.

Either Taylor is dumping Kelce or Kelce is retiring soon - so the Chefs are going to lose the Swiftie bump either way.

KC needs to get Taylor in for summer residency to make up for their losses

As long as the owners still want him, Kelce's not retiring any time soon. He has a chance to make football history with his mahomey.

arkansas used to be a 65-70% cowboys state but now titens eat up NE ark saints eat up south ark and the chiefs is slowly take over NW Ark i wouild say now cowboys 55% SAINTS 10% Tenn 5% KC 30%

Fayetteville is not a bad idea only drawback is j jones much better than jonesboro where jonesboro only has 125k metro

Fayettevillie has a 70k stadium already 500k metro and in 10-15 years will be a million metro near OK city and Tulisa another million metro

only drawback is jones thinks arkansas is his turf

5 hr drive from KC i would love this if this puts them in afc south and puts Houston in the west

counting L Rock OKC city and Tulsa its around 2.7 mil plus the 500k the Favettevillie has all within a 3-hour drive
the razorbacks wear red so do the chiefs all the fayetteville workers would have is paint chiefs in endzone and on 50- yd line razorbacks are never home after thanking plus some years the SEC gives them brutal road trips for 3-4 weeks in a row

ps favettevillie is only 80k by itseif but springdale rogers bentonvillie home of wal mart and fort smith add up to 500k

J-man, thanks for the summary of changing allegiances etc. of southwestern/midwestern fans to the NFL teams around there. Interesting and something I never would have heard about elsewhere.

np arkansas is a weird state when it comes to pro sports teams NBA was really weird but since the Mid 2000s OKC NO and Memphis has a chunk each in the 90's u wouild see buills LA but really not a lot of super fans
MLB has 4 teams blolcked STL and KC i understand kind of even through STL is 4 and a haif hr away Tex and KC is 7 hrs and hou is 10 hrs
in the 90's we never got KC games
i watched HSE and they stared TEX and HOU games

and about college sports in sorth arkansas lots of LSU and ole miss fans Jonesboro is a 50-50 speit bewteen Ark and A-State and i live about 3 miles from a-state camps

The only Fayetteville that could even remotely be involved in such a conversation (and even then, it's a huge stretch) is 16 hours away from KC in North Carolina. It's a bit over 200,000 people in a metro area a bit over twice that, and even it would only ever be invoked as a transparent bargaining chip. It's not a serious destination for a team.

Fayetteville, AK (which is a bit over 3½ hours away) is a sub-100,000 population city that isn't remotely plausible even as a fake bargaining destination. You might as well argue that a team would relocate to Portland—and then add, “in Maine”.

The irony is that Kaufmann is easily the best stadium of that era. I don't love baseball being in a parking lot savanna, but Kaufmann is a pretty good time.

Kansas seems like the only alternative that would still make the teams "Kansas City".

Fayetteville arkansas is 94 k now their Metropolitan Statistical Area is 576,403 the razorbacks football stadium is 76 k they can draw from tulsa ok city littie rock springfield as well just a 3-hour drive if not for jerry jones it would be kc best choice but jones would fight tooth and nail because KC would take on his terrory when over the last 10 years KC already have around 35% of the state

the sch would not be bad because after thanksgiving is not used like this season only has home games Sept 14 oct 5 oct 19 and nov 2 16 and 23

Kansas City Kansas has 157 k and can only draw in around 3 to 4 mil when that couild a worry when mahaomes leaves when in arkansas they wouild draw in 6 mil plus if KC was serious about moveing Littie Rock wouild tear down their joke of stadium and build them anything they want

Voters tell them to screw by a pretty resounding margin, almost 60/40
https://www.kctv5.com/2024/04/03/royals-chiefs-concede-loss-stadium-sales-tax-vote/
In the Bills stadium thread, I think I was in the minority who thought the Bills stadium deal wasn't a bad terrible for New York State, as they were essentially borrowing against future tax revenue. It's a lot harder to make these sorts of deals work for counties, since simply having a pro sports team doesn't create new revenue source like it would for entities with income taxing power. You are basically creating/extending a sales tax that's a flat giveaway to two corporations.

I'm not sure what the path forward is for Kansas City, as there seems to be a coordination problem between the two teams and the two state governments in the region. The Chiefs seemed to have a straightforward plan for their money, but the Royals were more scattershot. I'm guessing unbundling these two stadiums might yield better results for all parties.

Welcome home, Dallas Texans! This is pretty funny. If only to get under Jerry's skin.

Cowboys and Chiefs in Dallas? Mayor Eric Johnson pushes for team to return to city after rejected stadium tax

https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/cowboys-and-chiefs-in-dallas-mayor-eric-johnson-pushes-for-team-to-return-to-city-after-rejected-stadium-tax/
So a team wanting to Build a shiney new stadium and was rejected for using taxpayer funding and this guy thinks they should then move to Dallas and go play football in an even older complete dump of a stadium in the old cotton bowl? These idiot worthless politicians should stick to what all of them do best, doing nothing and robbing the citizen tax base blind!

The Hunts are big in Dallas. I suspect this is an empty political favor to put pressure on KC.

"Dallas was named the top sports city in the United States because we play to win," Johnson told The Dallas Morning News on Wednesday.
Too bad they'd have to import a winner.

Nobody ever said politicians were smart.

The next step would be the merry-go-round where the Chiefs become the Texans again, and force the Titans owner to sell the rights to the Oilers name to the current Houston franchise.
