Interested to see the details on this. RHH 1B to back up Casas when needed, but 0 positional flexibility.
Edit... Looks like a minor league deal which makes much more sense at this point than tying up a spot on the 26 man.
A 34 year old 1B/DH coming off the worst season of his career (87 OPS+, -0.5 WAR) and a season in which his numbers dropped precipitously from 2022.
I hope they didn't pay too much for him.

Fine as a Dalbec alternative for the backup 1B. For a second I thought it was major league and was sweating.

This in a vacuum is a fine addition, it's just pretty disappointing that the addition is someone expected to compete with Bobby Dalbec.

He was dealing with an injury the entire season. Which to your point, could be a function of age or it could be something that he can bounce back from.

There's no real problem with the signing since it's a minor league deal, and Breslow is smartly not counting on Cron for much of anything. I'm just....whelmed. It certainly doesn't move the needle for 2024.
Not exciting, but I will rank it with the signing of Heineman that they now have some depth at 1B at least.
Would he? Dalbec can play 3B and OF, and even 2B/SS in a pinch. I say that as someone who would be horrified if Dalbec made the roster.

If CJ Cron looks totally horrific you are probably right.
However, they don't currently have a back up first baseman and their DH is a left handed hitter who can also play LF. He had a 125 wRC+ in 2021 and 101 in 2022. I doubt he fails make the team.
Just so people understand, the only right handed hitters on this team to post a season with a wRC+ over 100 (meaning above average) between the last 2 seasons: Vaughn Grissom and Rob Refsnyder
It's a terrifying right handed hitting group with error bars at every position. It's really bad.
You guys are all gonna look like goofballs once Bobby becomes the next Teddy ballgame. He told me he's just been waiting for the right moment to truly break out.

I like this signing; they needed another guy that can play 1b, and I suspect he likely makes the team.
I think you might be looking for "lifestyle" here.
CJ will provide WooSox parents many opportunities to point him out and say, "yeah, he used to be a pretty good major leaguer."
That would be one scenario, but not the only one. I've laid this out previously. They don't need to have a dedicated back-up 1B on the 26-man roster full time. Not when you have a starting 1B you expect to play 150+ games. They could be okay "making do" with Reyes or Refsnyder getting a day at 1B when Casas needs a blow. Having the depth in Worcester to protect against a Casas injury is important. Having it on the bench every day isn't, particularly if it's a guy like Cron who plays nowhere else on the diamond and can't be optioned if the roster spot is needed for something else.

So assuming your bench would be Reyes, McGuire, Refsnyder, and Rafaela? I’d imagine they’d want Rafaela playing every day and not a backup / utility player in Boston, but I guess that’s possible.
Reyes, McGuire, Refsnyder, and Valdez, actually. I'd like to have at least one middle infield option hitting from the left side, in spite of how LHH-heavy the roster is elsewhere.

Don't be too hasty. With a little digging I see he caught for 9 games in the Cape league in 2010. Maybe this is the break he has been waiting for.
Only one way to find out. May as well have something to watch this spring.

In July of 2016, my family and I made a pilgrimage to Fenway to finally see the Redsox. They were playing the Angels. We were so excited. Buchholz got the start, and the Sox lost, 21-2. CJ Cron, starting at first base, came into the game hitting something like .120. I'm pretty sure he went 6-6 with two dingers.
