    Angels to release Albert Pujols

If you add 3 years to his age, that puts his peak seasons between age 26 and 32, which makes pretty good sense. And puts him at 35 when he signed with the Angels, and about 40 when he completely drops off and is a below average hitter. All pretty reasonable as an aging curve.

    Perfection.

    Angels to release Albert Pujols

Those guys had to present new documents after 9/11 because they were applying for visas, my understanding was that he was already a citizen or pretty far down the naturalization path by then and wouldn't need to provide any more docs like that. One of the reasons he dropped in the draft was...

    Angels to release Albert Pujols

Records in the Domican can be pretty lax. A lot of births take place at home, so the most convenient way to track age is by baptism instead of birth records, but even those are spotty. He moved to the US around what was supposedly him being 16, but if you were a baseball playing 18-19 year...

2020/21 UEFA Europa League: Galloping to Gdansk

I think it's the best lineup I could figure out. You could nominally move Saka to LB and Xhaka to midfield, but we know he ends up dropping into that LB area anyway while the nominal LB is freed up and moves forward. My guess is that Saka is going to play where Tierney would have anyway if he...

Benintendi to Royals for Franchy Cordero, Mets RHP prospect Josh Winckowski, and 3 PTBNLs

So he's sort of like the old Tampa Bay Bucs? He can't hit balls in the zone, can't hit balls out of the zone, and can't figure out what else he can swing at?

Maybe the Red Sox are good?

Your own bullpen always looks worse than other teams because you see the frustrating walks and bombs as a pattern. Pitching is hard, and overall the Sox bullpen has been pretty good at it. I think the idea wasn't just that you'd throw a bunch of crap at the wall and see what sticks, but also...

Maybe the Red Sox are good?

Well, their bullpen is 7th in the MLB by ERA, 3rd by FIP, 4th by xFIP, and 3rd by WAR (which is based on FIP). So maybe their weakness is less obvious than you think from watching them? The outfield and first base could definitely use an upgrade though.

Arsenal 20-21: Artetenal and/or Kia Joorabchian Futebol Clube

The double down-grade of Tierney to Xhaka at LB and Xhaka to Ceballos in midfield is just so massive. Hopefully Tierney can be back for the next leg. I know if it was up to him he'd just duct tape his body back together and head on out there. Also playing Chambers at RB over Bellerin and not...

Arsenal 20-21: Artetenal and/or Kia Joorabchian Futebol Clube

That didn't start well, and kept getting worse. But somehow they did just enough to keep hopes of a final alive. I don't know if that's good or bad.

Alex Verdugo - on-field discussion thread

I think there is a combination of increased risk causing a discount because the higher WAR players always have high yearly salary but are also longer, and a compression effect from the salary cap. All the dollars as you get closer to or over the cap cost you more in either opportunity cost or...

Arsenal 20-21: Artetenal and/or Kia Joorabchian Futebol Clube

It's luck. And Arsenal simply aren't good enough to overcome bad luck in individual games, and aren't deep enough to overcome bad injury luck.

    I agree completely.

Maybe the Red Sox are good?

I agree with you on the problem, I just think there are other solutions that are better than calling up a guy when there is little evidence he can actually be a major league quality player. Solutions like moving Hernandez out of the leadoff spot. He's fine as a CF, but awful in that spot in...

Maybe the Red Sox are good?

Yeah, the numbers Cesar put up were all his at bats in PR including the series, where he hit one HR. You can choose to put emphasis on the smaller sample size part of that small sample size if you want to. Overall, the power was well below what you'd want from corner outfielder.
