“The injuries to Strahm are extensive, going back to his time in Kansas City. Inflammation in both his left and right knees, a right and left patellar tendon pair, all in his time in the majors so far as a starter and reliever. He pitched only 10 innings last season between Triple-A El Paso and the Padres.”

His orthopedic history is worse than mine.

Strahm was pretty excellent from 2016-18. He had some knee problems beginning in late ‘17 and then was dealt to the Padres. He gave them a great year out of the pen in ‘18, they tried him as a starter in ‘19 and it didn’t go well. Knee problems seemed to flare up again and he had it surgically repaired last summer.

He looks like this year’s Andriese, hopefully with better results. Could be pretty useful if healthy.

I think it may mean Darwinzon is getting dealt. That’s too many lefties for one pen. Taylor is solid and I don’t think they’ll DFA Austin Davis, who has no options left.

Not a chance they signed this guy in order to deal Darwinzon. We're looking at a shortened spring training followed by expanded rosters for the first month. They can absolutely carry four lefties in the pen for April, assuming Strahm even makes it out of spring training.

This is Bloom taking a flyer just to have a little more pitching depth to start the season. If he works out, great. If not, he's gone by May.

As of now, rosters will not be expanded. Regular 26 man with 13 pitchers max.

Strahm’s got a major league contract, I think he’ll make it out of spring training.

Darwinzon’s in his last pre-arb year and hasn’t turned the corner. Didn’t make it onto the ALDS roster and was shelled in his 1.1 innings against the Astros. He’s of course optionable, but I think teams need to see what he can do at the major league level, and I’m not sure our ‘22 pen is the best place to do it.

I'm more of the belief that the Sox have plenty of bullpen arms through their 40 man roster and likely one of them will turn into a great BP arm for at least a season. I'm more optimistic in mixed minor league track record guys like Feldman suddenly turning in a great season at the ML level than going out and signing a "was good for a while 2 years ago" type of guy at $millions. Those 3-7 million per year deals add up quickly

Just to maybe put this signing in perspective, what do fungible free agent arms typically go for in today's market? Is 3m the going rate?

Andriese got $2.1 million last year, and he seems like a similar type of guy: multi-inning arm, low velocity but good changeup, recently DFA’d coming off an injury. So maybe the going rate is a bit higher now.

I think Strahm’s a tick or two above “fungible,” which makes me think of guys like Jhoulys Chacin and Brandon Workman, but YMMV. Curious how it works out.

Now about this other bullpen move…

I’ve been interested in Soler as a fallback option, because his numbers in Atlanta were similar to his 2019 breakout. As a power RH bat with poor defense, he also fits well on the roster with JBJ and Verdugo. But I would not really want to give him a 3 year deal, let alone 5, unless we’re talking very low AAVs.
i think this is reasonable. I’d consider him at 3 years but certainly agree that it feels risky. More than 3, I’m out, and I think the Sox are too.

Remember when people thought there was going to be a fun, wild spree of activity when teams could officially sign players?

He’s got HOF moss.
My first thought as well. The other guys on the team are going to have to work to keep up.

He seems to be really goo in even years, a la Josh Beckett, so maybe there's something to that (there isn't, really). If he's somewhere between "bad Strahm" and "good Strahm" than I think he's an effective piece. If he has a good Strahm year, he's an outstanding pickup.

I'll add that guys like Eduard Bazardo (who, if not injured last year, probably would've seen a lot more opportunities, if only for covid reasons) and Kaleb Ort (though he faded down the stretch at Worcester and struggled vs lefties) as other guys who should get serious consideration for bullpen roles out of the gate at the ML level if they have strong spring trainings. I'd rather not throw six or seven million for someone like Robles who's just as likely to crater as he is to succeed.

Seems like an overpay for Strahm for a semi-fungible arm. Career FIP over 4. Only 6.2 IP last year. Would rather give X/Correa/Devers an extra $3M (or lower ticket prices $1)

Indeed. With Paxton and now Strahm, we seem to be cornering the market on injured lefties who can't pitch.

On the bright side, at least Jay Groome now has some company.
