If there's a way for this to somehow end with Bell on the Pats for short money and a 4th round pick...I will never ask God for anything ever again. Even if we don't need him, please make this happen just so we can watch the reaction.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport (and others) has reported the Philadelphia Eagles could consider moving reserve tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai. Vaitai was the starting LT in Super Bowl 50. The Eagles need CB help -- maybe JC Jackson or JMac goes that way? Vaitai is in the last year of his rookie contract and his base salary was $2.025M, so he would be owed about $1M by the Pats for the rest of the season.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Tyler Eifert heading this way as a TE target. I bet a 6th would get that done.
He's cheap enough that it would be worth a risk, assuming he is a decent blocker. (I don't know.) I'd hate to use more than a sixth, since he's likely to get hurt getting to the airport. Number of games started in his career: 15, 1, 13, 8, 2, 4 (and 8 this year, so he's close to reaching his sell by date).

The LeVeon Bell contract turns out to be exactly as horrible as we all thought it was.

The Jets would be nuts not to clear Gase out of there by the end of the season...what a terrible set of decision makers (in whatever configuration) they have had.

Newton
McCoy is averaging 5.2 y/c
He’s also 31, carrying the ball less than 10 times a game and coming off a year in which he averaged 3.2 YPC. Maybe calling him a corpse isn’t entirely fair but there’s no question he’s benefitting from a limited workload, stacked offensive line and incredible passing threat.

Obviously the Chiefs would be better off using their resources to bolster their defense. But Bell would be an enormous upgrade over McCoy if they went that direction.

I thought Gase wasn’t a fan of that signing.

No no no no no no no. Do NOT trade any of the DBs that have been the biggest key to an historically good defense.

It wasn't my idea. I knew I had read it this morning on the train ride in, but only now rediscovered it. It was Albert Breer:
"Eagles OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai continues to be a name of interest on the market; plenty of teams have offensive line needs, and Vaitai, in a contract year, could help. Philadelphia is stocked at the position, and if GM Howie Roseman does move the fourth-year pro, who started at left tackle for the Eagles in Super Bowl LII, I wouldn’t be stunned to see a player coming back. The team has explored the corner market, and there are tackle-needy teams (Cleveland, New England) with depth at that spot."

Given the condition of the OL and the cap, the offense is what it is - but that's good enough to win a Super Bowl with alongside a great defense that should suppress scores. The defense came together late last year and it was enough and this year's unit seems to have built upon it. The one piece they could afford to trade - Bennett - has already been sent out and it'd be foolish to weaken a dominant unit to marginally upgrade the offense. You're not replacing Andrews and LT's are too expensive. A tight end upgrade is probably the best shot at substantially helping the offense at this late stage. With the OL, there are 2 factors that also argue against pursuing a trade. You can point to better health potentially upgrading 2 positions with Wynn at LT and Mason hopefully healing. Fortunately, the best positional coach the Pats have is Dante at the OL and I think BB gambles on those factors to stabilize the line. He'll scroll through the waiver wires for depth, but taking any more from the defense could be fatal - particularly if any injuries occur there.

Gotta be a salary dump. How much is he making (and why wouldn't the Rams just release him)

It's Cincinnati so probably a 1st rounder. Seriously though, I think they want a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him which is ridiculous.
I wonder what goes into this. He seems to have no value to them, unless they think he will help develop a rookie quarterback for the next 8 weeks. He's a UFA.

The only reasons I can see not to trade him for whatever you can get is (1) you don't want to set a precedent that you'll give guys away at the trade deadline when you suck, and (2) you want him after next year and you want to keep him through the league year to have exclusive bargaining.

Number 1 would be the sign of a terrible franchise. Every situation is different, and standing on principle or because you don't think you have the ability to say "that was different' in future negotiations is dumb. Number 2 is perhaps a realistic thing to worry about if you really like the player, but to the point where you turn down a draft pick for it? You can still get him free agency with our without exclusive bargaining.

Obviously, you don't just give away a player if there are two or more teams interested and you can use that. But, otherwise, I just don't get what the play would be here.

Then again, until yesterday Ken Wizenhut still had a job, so there's a lot of fucking dumb in the NFL.

What the fuck? If you’re Miami, wouldn’t you rather have 5 million in cap space than a 5th round pick?

I think you can't release an injured player.

You often wonder how much teams value picks in terms of cap dollars, but now we know: a 5th rounder is worth 4.5 million in cap space.

The Rams must need the money for another move.

Why does MIA need cap space? They have over 100M in cap space in 2020 so no need to roll extra over. Funny the Fins have more cap space allocated to dead cap space $58M than they do offense this season 46M. The dead # drops to 12M next year so they have more cap space than they can use.

Also on a rookie deal, and I think he was mentioned before, but what about (oft-injured) Hunter Henry? I'm sure the Chargers irrationally believe they have a chance at the playoffs, but he fits the OJ Howard/Austin Hooper TE pipe dream.
Highly doubt it. The Chargers are only a game or so from being in the wild card hunt and that offense needs all the weapons it can surround Rivers with. They have next to nothing after Henry and, as you noted, he's on a cheap rookie deal. The price tag would likely be pretty high. I could see them moving Melvin Gordon, if there was a buyer. They seem pretty happy with Ekeler.

Clock strikes midnight.

Now the interesting FA stuff starts to happen. Dwayne Allen seems like the most compelling possibility, and the Josh Gordon release watch starts.

Wouldn't they have already signed Allen if they wanted him?
Perhaps not if actively discussing possible trades -- like for Howard or Eifert, etc. Isn't there always a bit of FA activity in the week or so after the trade deadline, when teams don't get their guy?
