Yeah that guy is an assholeWhat the fuck does that guy know?
I think this is really just a bad bone bruise. I would peg his return to the lineup in the first week of May.

If this guy turns out to be correct, he should be given a membership here.
I agree it was bang bang and TKAA is right about the sequence. But it wasn't Martinez's fault. Talus bones break all the time. The world is an imperfect place.Bang bang in a matter of just a few seconds. Freak injury and fortunately not serious. Hopefully he will not have to rehab games. 10 days and back in the lineup. No such thing as good timing.
every good bone deserves favourIsn't the real question in how he returns? Whether there's any effects running and such, or whether he favors the ankle?
A long, long time ago. Long enough that Red Averages-which comes from Medias-was considered a funny translation (and SOSH username) pre-2004.When did we switch from Calcetines Rojas to Medias Rojas?
It could be the truth of what they're told.every good bone deserves favour
I have to agree that I don't understand why the Sox are being so definitive so quickly on Xander's expected return.
If he’s not, do we give the WebMDbot a membership instead? If this guy turns out to be correct, he should be given a membership here.
No, we promote a lurker that had a similar injury in high school and had a comparable recovery time.If he’s not, do we give the WebMDbot a membership instead?
That's how I saw it. Either Devers was there when he last looked, or he didn't look at all and just expected Devers to be there.BTW, when I saw the play in real time, I thought the ball just unintentionally squirted out of his glove during the backhand. I guess I misread that since the consensus is that he was shuffling it to a non-existing fielder. Is that the accepted explanation?
With the injury to his left foot, it wouldn't affect the drive in his swing which is developed from his right.I wonder though, with the injury being on his left foot, does that make it less impactful for his hitting because it's not on his back foot?
I agree (and I think it's the latter), and I feel like Devers should have been there. That's how I saw it. Either Devers was there when he last looked, or he didn't look at all and just expected Devers to be there.
Here's the Talus
Including the picture of the Talus bone that stormmon provided, is the Talus too high up to (easily) protect it with a metal plate? Did Pedroia have a metal plate put in his shoe back in 2010 when he had that horrible foul ball directly off the top of his foot injury? With the injury to his left foot, it wouldn't affect the drive in his swing which is developed from his right.
But it would affect his front side, which needs to provide a stable base for a powerful swing.
The real risk is that he fouls a bunch of pitches off his left foot, re-injuring it or prolonging a return to mashing.
Let him heal. Bring the carbon fiber ankle armor when he's ready.
I thought I remembered Holt being out of options, but that is certainly a point in his favor. He provides extra depth at both IF and OF, and unlike Marrero, he can be optioned and still provide depth if Lin or someone else takes his job on the 25 man. I don't know if the Red Sox should have considered that worth the extra money, but it's not so much money that I can't see why they might.
He has a mild reverse split in his MLB career. Lin and Hernandez also bat LH, Swihart hits from both sides, and Moreland is the preferred LH bench bat. He's also a lefty batter, which is really what sets him apart from other utility players
And now back to our regularly scheduled injury recovery speculation...I thought this was a Holt v. Marrero issue. If not, my bad.
-- It is (was), but not in a vacuum. Holt is better than Marrero, but his skill set is redundant several times over with the current 40-man and he costs $1.5M+ more. Marrero was useful as a late-inning defensive replacement or a more-than-occasional-fill-in at the two weakest defensive positions on the team. He's acceptable at the plate against LHP.
My eyes say Holt's a better OF than JDM. Regardless, JDM is OF #4, Nunez isn't playing the OF anytime soon. And Lin, who you say wont outhit Holt, isn't on the team.So in Holt and Swihart they have two versatile extra guys. Did Holt steal your lunch money or something?
-- He did not.
And with JDM as the DH most of the time, it makes it difficult for him to go to OF mid game.
Lin may be a better option than Holt, but I'm not sure if you're saying that.
-- I think Lin and Holt are roughly equivalent, given Holt is probably a little better hitter if healthy, but Lin is better defensively. But that's kind of the point. Holt exists in several other roughly equivalent or better forms - between Lin, Swihart, Nunez, Hernandez, Marrero. It doesn't make sense to pay $2.2M to get 150 PA when there are plenty of equivalent options to take them for $500K. In the end, we're talking about the last guy on the roster and (hopefully) less than 150 PA. So, it isn't of great consequence. I thought it was germane since we now have a situation where it would be better to have Marrero than Holt (regardless of the money), and it didn't really make sense to me to go the route they did.
Which would also keep him off turf for another couple of weeks, which can't hurt.that all sounds positive.
we're on a west coast trip next week. I doubt they rush him into Oakland as soon as he's eligible, but he could rejoin in Toronto in two weeks' time or just wait until we're back for more Rays at the end of the month
I also saw it as unintentional. It’s 10 days or 60 days. We all know that. Red Sox saying 10-14 days is not relevant except as advised by the doctor. Why take the news as anything but the truth?
BTW, when I saw the play in real time, I thought the ball just unintentionally squirted out of his glove during the backhand. I guess I misread that since the consensus is that he was shuffling it to a non-existing fielder. Is that the accepted explanation?
You. Always droppin’ science! He seemed to be walking around fine in the dugout last night
or - y'knowI really don't like him in the dugout. Someone accidentally bumps into him and steps on his foot and all of a sudden we're in a pickle.
The dugout is where all of this started, after all.I really don't like him in the dugout.
Except for, you know, against Ohtani...Looks like Bogaerts is getting closer to a return which is good news. I'll be happy to see a lot fewer lineups with Holt at SS.
But there were people right here in this very thread with no medical backgrounds and no specific knowledge of Xander's injury speculating he'd be out for months, if not the season. I'll believe it when I see it.
