I had a chance to meet Gedman about a decade ago at a Marlboro convenience store. He was apparently a regular there. Definitely agree with SJH's characterization of him as a quiet guy - you'd never guess that he's a former big league ballplayer.
At fantasy camp a few years ago he and I were in adjacent sinks in the locker room, just cleaning up after a game. He ran his comb through his very thin hair, gave a wan smile, and said to me "I guess you can't make chicken salad out of chicken shit." He had zero "I used to be a big leaguer" attitude. Nice guy.

Wait, you covered the team back then?
I was the Buffalo Head Society's point gal (the only one who could take time off from work during February and March) for Spring Training stories between 1987 and 1994 or so. Dave Nevard and a friend published their newsletter in the most primitive way for a year before I volunteered to upgrade their work, then I did a spring training report on the Red Sox and other Florida teams for a couple of weeks in those years. Of course the reason I started doing this at all was the lingering reaction I had to the horrible end to the 1986 World Series, like so many Red Sox fans. I was thrilled to see how the Red Sox organization treated the 1986 players when the 2004 team won the Series.

This is what's left of the BHS's online presence. http://www.buffalohead.org/

This article has what I think Gedman would say:

I have to admit that I still remember a few of Gedman ugly swings and just shaking my head wondering how anyone could think he could hit a ball like that.
Some things Gedman told me "back in the day" come back to me when I read articles like that. He suffered from back strain arising from scoliosis like I do, and I can testify to the problems a back that's not quite on the plumb line causes. He wore a small wedge inside one shoe to help compensate.

Didn't Gedman run a baseball camp in MA? I could've sworn I attended as a little leaguer.

Just found this thread - as a Greenwell guy, I missed my chance to weigh in earlier. (Swing at that fist pitch forever, Gator.) I just want to say that if I'm reading right, two different posters recollected a particular half-inning of 30 year old regular season radio play-by-play by a Blue Jays announcer, and described it in almost exact and matching detail. That's why I love this place.

I met Gedman at fantasy camp a few years back. My locker was a few down from his for the week. He was a really nice guy, down to earth, proud father. I recall his daughter was quite a hockey player by all accounts. He had a really quiet humor (though not always subtle just not announced to the whole crowd). One game he was coaching the other team, I foul tipped a ball down which came up into the catcher's nads and of course he went right down. Gedman jogs in from the dugout helps the guy up and in a voice only those of us at the plate could hear mutters "nobody cares, that's why you've got a fuckin' glove" which from the batter's box I found hilarious. Visiting with some of the guys between games he recounted that Oil Can was really his favorite pitcher to catch during his years in Boston.

I ran into Rich a few times in the summer baseball circuit 10+ years ago. Both his boys were great players for excellent Framingham teams.

Pretty funny to watch Rich still wearing baseball pants croutch down outside the fence down the left field line at Donnelly field in East Cambridge warming his son up
