Where are files stored on the Nexus 7?

I have just spent over an hour on Nexus help without finding the answer to this simple question. (I haven't called Google, just using this: https://support.google.com/nexus/?hl=en#topic=3415518) I used a USB cable to transfer a down-loaded epub book from my computer to the Nexus. On my computer's graphic of the Nexus innards, it shows documents under internal storage, so that's where I put the book. But I can't find it on the Nexus itself. There are just a lot of apps and settings. There is a "download" section under the apps, where I can see and access some pdf files I put there this summer, so I added the epub there. While it shows up as being there when the Nexus is connected to the computer, as it does in the documents, it actually doesn't show up when I disconnect the Nexus from the computer and click on downloads. I wouldn't have been surprised if I couldn't actually read the book until I downloaded a new epub reader, although I hoped I might be able to use the Overdrive program which is already there. But I am surprised I actually can't find the file.   I would really appreciate some help with this. TIA.

What the fuck. I had to google this earlier today for my nexus and found a random web forum from 2012 where a guy suggested Astro. A few hours later someone else asks it here and gets the same answer. My brain is wrinkled.

Root Explorer has been great for the Android phones I've used (no experience with Nexus 7), but you need to give yourself root/superuser access for it.
