Kind of a developmental pick.  All the scouts say he's not a special athlete, but has solid technical skills and could develop into an aggressive pass rusher.
Maybe it doesn't flash on film, but he was among the Combine leaders in the jumping drills which are some of the more translatable ones for pass rushers.

I don't really get the stockpiling of DEs though. Jones, Ninkovich, and Sheard are all under contract for 2016.

I wonder if Grissom is being looked at as, versatile, sure - but more focused on LB role?
Yeah, he looks like more of an OLB prospect in the Pats' system to me.

I'm gonna get out ahead on this one. Although I love him, I wouldn't be surprised if Nink is close to cooked. You're probably looking at one more season of productivity, before he goes the Mike Vrabel circa 2008 route.

All the indicators are there: never a special athlete, but a max effort guy who gets the most out of his talent. Once he hits 32, 33...I don't see him aging well. He doesn't have great athletic pedigree.

He's done amazing considering where he started, but I expect him to start declining fairly soon. So I'm okay with the pick.

The Pats just adjusted his contract up in March, basically doubling his salary. He also just turned 31 in February, and the wear on the tires is reasonable. I'd bet they see him having at least 2 more seasons, through the life of the contract.

Yeah, I was thinking about the extension as I was posting. Makes me think they wouldn't have signed him if they didn't think he'd hold up.

You're also right about the wear on the tires, as Nink was a spot player during his early career.

"Close to cooked" was probably to strong a phrase. I just wonder how he'll age.

Maybe a little bit better if he has a capable developmental prospect behind him who can sub in occasionally -- Nink's been an iron man, but I wonder if his effectiveness goes up or his durability increases if he gets spelled a bit more frequently.

Sure, but we also added Jabaal Sheard, a starting-caliber edge rusher who's going play a bunch of snaps. Flowers and Grissom are like fourth and fifth DEs until 2016 (assuming they can beat out Moore / Buchanan / Bequette).

Pro Football Focus really liked him, listed him as one of the 10 best remaining players after round 1:

Trey Flowers, Arkansas, ED

Hes not a pure speed rusher, but he is an every-down threat. Flowers is great against the run and extremely good rushing the passer, which makes it all the more surprising teams are letting a guy slip, who could come in and start Day 1. His 61 quarterback disruptions in the SEC are nothing to be sniffed at, and he had the highest grade of any edge defender against the run. Whats more, he brings with him some versatility, being able to kick inside. An extremely powerful player.

DE Trey Flowers (101st overall). Asked his strength as a player, he focused on his work stopping the run and then revealed that his passion for football was sparked from an unexpected source. "I fell in love with the game watching '[The] Waterboy.' He just taught me to go crazy out there so I just take myself to a place and just attack," Flowers cracked, before adding his favorite scene: "He’s playing middle linebacker and he’s visualizing the quarterback saying something about his momma and he’s walking around going crazy, walking in circles, and then he jumps over the offensive line and hits the quarterback."

Huh. Does he pretend the opposing QB is a Klan member, too?

I feel old.  We used to get hyped up to Alvin Mack, not Bobby Boucher.

This is exactly where I stand. Love him but the falloff could be quick.
