How do we feel about Story's first season? I guess it depends on if he is able to come back for a significant chunk of the season.
On the negative side, he clearly had a down year at the plate, continuing a troubling trend after a down year in 2020. How much of it is bad luck? How much of it was a year adjusting away from Coors? Concerns about his career hitting outside of Coors have not been culled by his performance this season; but can he rebound with another season away from the those wonky confines? His average exit velocity is a career low (88.8 mph) but not tremendously off his career average of 90.4 mph. His xWOBA did sink down to .296, and his K% increased significantly back to the levels he was at when he was a rookie.
On the plus side, he has been a good defender at 2B and provided real positive value there. He's had some real hot streaks and his May was pretty incredible, so he has potential to carry a team at the plate for portions at a time. His baserunning, while probably never going to be used as much in Boston, is still very good. He's at 2 bWAR this season; assuming he was healthy for a full season, you would put him at around, IDK, like 3.5 - 4 WAR? In the future, if he can just be a little bit better at the plate, he will be providing a lot of positive value, but it needs to happen.
