Not a Rose fan, but why isn't Rose allowed to count his non-MLB, professional hits?
Rose had 427 hits in the minors (per B-R) so Ichiro has 405 to go to catch him in total professional hits. And he's got 2 more years to do it in the same number of professional seasons that Rose did.

I'm a huge Ichiro fan, and even I think this argument doesn't pass the sniff test

I'd love to see Rose taken down a peg but it is such a dumb argument and people were talking about that a month ago when Ichiro technically passed Rose. If Ichiro came right over when he was 19 or whatever would he stand a good chance to break 4,000 and challenge Rose? Probably, but he didn't so why would we consider him as greater? It's the same thing with Ted Williams missing seasons of his prime due to military service. Would Ted have hit over 700 home runs and challenged Ruth? Maybe, but he didn't and nobody considers him the "true" home run king (granted Aaron and Bonds put that number out of reach, but you get my point).

While we're at it let's count Cliff Richard's British hits and name him the King of Rock and Roll.
