The Game Ball Thread: Divisional Round vs Chiefs

There's 1:30 or so left, and they 3 timeouts. If you just run, you punt with about 1:15 left, and they have a legitimate shot. If you go for the first down, and get it, you win. If you don't get it, they have an additional timeout left.

I trade the timeout for the shot at the first down and ending the game every time.
And given the way Andy Reid is with time, there wasn't much of a risk to what they did. It was the difference with KC having 1 time out versus none. A KC team that had the ball at the Pat's 1 and took like 5 or 6 plays to get the TD. A KC team that blew the 2 minute warning like it was nothing. A KC team that had multiple plays with under 5 minutes left where 25-30 seconds came off the play clock. They weren't driving 80-90 yards down the field regardless of whether they had that extra time out or not.

Anybody know why they didn't just wave for a fair catch and then step out of the way on that one? Ball came down at about the 5 - would have been an easy touchback.
I have no idea what you saw but that ball bounced at the 5 and then went back a bit, there was no scenario where that would have been a touchback.

There is no chance that entered his mind. The situation was Pats get a first down and the game is over. Since there is almost no chance the Pats get a first running they decided to give their best player a chance to win the game.
He almost blew it but they got lucky and here we are.

This is to RoyHobbs obviously.

anyone else catch Andy Reid's press conference?

a) seems like the nicest guy in the world...but is he 57 or 87?
b) when asked about time management, he started rambling on about something in the first half. when told the question was about the end of the game was like well, naturally we went into the hurry-up, what's the question. lol....completely clueless there might even have been an issue.

game balls
1: Brady
2: Gronk and #11...but hold on to the damn ball.
3: OL

and honorable mention to the KC hurry-up offense.

I don't even disagree with you. The desire for the first down is definitely the thing but I thought it was at least a nice little curiosity.

BB and Josh for letting Tom do his thing, never playing conservative and always passing when it's the high percentage play no matter what time of the game it is. And Tom of course.

They threw there because without drops Brady is something like 32-40 and figured they had a really good shot at not only getting the completion but ending the game.

I can personally think of more than 1000 reasons. O/U on Brady yards was 300.5. God bless America.
At the end of the season we'll need an epic gambling wins/losses thread. This one and my Manning under 280 vs KC will be 1&2 in some order I imagine.

Down: Refs. Forgot who won coin toss then this:
Zo: Heard referees forgot the kicking balls & gauges at their hotel. Needed an escort to retrieve them prior to game....nice job NFL
While the coin toss was ridiculous, i appreciated them otherwise (relatively). The Not many flags and the game flowed better than most.

It's a low bar, but I'll take it.

Half the board was saying that this is exactly what would happen for the past two weeks. The other half kept saying they saw no reason for the optimism.

Guess we are all glad the first half was right.
Yep, this was best case scenario, with the OL looking good because people were actually open quickly. Glad I was in the right first half. It doesn't happen often.

Down: Brandon LaFell. Forget those wr screens, does he keep screwing up the playbook?

In this CSSNE profile of Belichick, it's clear that BB doesn't feel any need to change what's working just for the sake of balance. No need to run to set up the pass or any of that if the pass is already working.

Man, until reading this thread I hadn't really thought about the refs at all after the game ended, and I don't think that I have been able to say that in months. Amazing job by this crew.

Game ball has to go to almost everyone. Vollmer and the OLine looked pretty good after all the fears about this KC defense, Edelman showed why he is so important, Gronk had a few of his usual huge plays and some key blocks, and Brady was his usual playoff self (which is insanely good). Brown and Branch got in and disrupted the pocket a few times after the first series, even if the sacks weren't there (which shouldn't be a problem against Peyton/Ben), and the all-backup LB corps was serviceable. Just a great all-around effort from a bunch of guys who are pretty beat up at this point.

What happened w the coin toss? Missed it and don't see it online anywhere
Apparently, on the toss the refs initially said the Pats called the coin, but Slater (I think) had to tell the refs they were wrong and the Chiefs really won it.

Saw it on Twitter from Reiss and others.

Edit for grammar. Been drinking since 3pm

How do you figure, he didn't touch it and it still wasn't a touchback.

I did not think it was a cheapshot, it was borderline legal, but I thought it was dumb because the ball could have hit him with his back to the punt.

Yeah, he was lucky the ball didn't hit him. He was out of his mind on that play.

Chung was awesome, but McCourty seemed out of position too often today, though hard to judge on tv.

Brady's movement in the pocket was really exceptional. Interior line kept pressure out of his face. But on the occasions Brady needed the extra time, he kept plays alive with his feet.

Alex Smith was impressive on some scramble plays, but was often rolling out into a lot of eventual incompletions. This is why mobility in the pocket is so vital because you can continue to use the entire field.

Also, Chung and company muzzled Kelce - 3.8 yards per catch. His long was 13. Other five receptions went for ten yards total. Baby Gronk? More like Embryo Gronk.

Remember that Reid was coach for the Eagles back in 2004 and they totally messed up the clock management in that Super Bowl too with a "hurry up" offense that used up about 4 minutes.

Is it weird that I initially missed the point here because I saw the 28-42 line and instinctively thought that was too low for Brady?

It took a third glance at the photo for it to hit me </shame>

And when they got the ball back on their own four, down by a field goal with 46 seconds left and no timeouts their first down play was an in-bounds one yard catch.

In addition to the regulars - TB12, Gronk, Edelman, the OL and the training staff, I would give a major thumbs up to Rob Ninkovich - really seemed to be all over the place (in the good way) while playing hard, high motor football yet effectively in control and "within himself."

Yeah, Nink had a true "good motor" game. He was digging deep to be involved in so many plays.

That one non-DPI call in the end zone was horrendous, but overall I'll take that game any day from the refs. The more they let them play, the less they can screw things up (and obviously improved game flow for viewing).

TB12. He got a fucking TD twice in one drive tonight.

Also, I disagree about the refs. They missed a clear DPI that cost the Patriots a TD and made the game closer than it had to be. They get the game Ds.

I was kind of half watching at work, but I think I saw at least five solid 'drops' that should have been easy catches, mostly by Edelman. That was a great game by TB12 but it could have been one of his best postseason games with some catches and a couple calls. Outside the Tebow game I'm drawing a blank on what would rank above it.
