I believe he's a FA. Cheap Talib backup plan?
Maybe they will sign them both so that the entire Pats secondary is one party away from being suspended for the year.

Let's also note that probably the same fate awaits Julius Peppers.

I'd have to imagine serious interest from Patriots in one or more of Red Bryant, Henry Melton, Michael Johnson, Jared Allen, DeMarcus Ware*, Julius Peppers*.

Bengals slot Andrew Hawkins was given the low tender ($1.4M), so any signing team would get him w/o draft pick comp. Could be enticing.

Seems like the kind of guy Belichick could target.

We have signed @tpolamalu to a new three-year contract. Here's to many more memories of #TroyBeingTroy.

It's cute that the Steelers believe "Troy being Troy" is a good thing, on the field. To me, "Troy being Troy" constitutes making plays because you take stupid risks, and because you're usually out of position.

Tom Brady alone could put together a 10 minute highlight reel of "Troy being Troy".

"Fair contract" can mean a lot of things. I'm sure if you ask Joe Flacco, his contract is "fair".

And re: pass rush. I dont think the edge is the problem although they could obv use some depth at de. They need what tommy kelly was providing w his ability to push the pocket and disrupt from the middle. Not sure who that guy is but im ready to move on from wilfork if bill can identify him

Wait, doesn't free agency start March 11th with teams being able to negotiate starting on the 8th? How did the Colts sign D'Qwell Jackson already?

He was cut by Cleveland so he is not subject to that.

It's too bad Davone Bess apparently has gone crazy. As a player I feel like he'd be a monster in the Pats offense.

edit: Monster is definitely hyperbole. But the player he was a few years ago would have been a good backfill for Edelman's expected role this season

This I agree with. It's a shame

Andrew Hawkins is the guy I want in this role.

Gotcha, thanks for clearing that up.

As a guy I took in the Realfantasy draft, I'm somewhat familiar with Hawkins and got to watch him in a couple of games this year when he was healthy (he missed the first 8 weeks on IR due to a high ankle sprain). He's definitely a Patriots type of guy, but I'm not sure he's a great fit if the team has Edelman and Amendola on it. He's small, at 5'7" and 170, so he's almost exclusively a slot WR option. He's got great speed and quickness and has a little bit of versatility, but I don't think you want him lining up on the outside. If the team doesn't resign Edelman or trades DA, I could see them being much more interested.

He's also a RFA meaning the Bengals can match any offer (they tendered him at $1.4M), so I think it would take a starting salary somewhere in the $3M range for next season to really have a chance to have Cincy pass on matching. They appear to like Hawkins quite a bit and he gives their offense an added dimension they don't have with their other WRs.  The good thing about the RFA status in this case is that if a team does sign him away from Cincy, they wouldn't have to give up a draft pick. He was tendered at the lowest tender possible, which means a team would get a draft pick in the same round the player was drafted, and in Hawkins' case, he wasn't drafted, so no compensation would be required.

I think it's a lock Edelman is back. Probably 2/8-2/10. Wilfork's deal becomes restructured. Talib goes to Denver. Aside from 2007 and the year they got Colvin the Pats really don't do Free Agency in terms of big ticket items. Which is fine. Talib's replacement will come in the draft and the extra money saved by Wilfork will go towards some vets on the cheap.

I would be 120% certain they go nowhere near Revis. He makes way too much and doesn't fit the Belichick MO.

Yep, me too. I think his starting point is Amendola's 5 year deal and most likely Edelman asks for more than $10 guaranteed even after a 6-8 signing bonus.

Ugh.  Hate the thought of Denver replacing Champ Bailey with Talib for roughly the same cost.  That would suck.

What other teams are interested in Edelman that would pay that money?

If the structure is similar to Amendola's, I'm betting quite a few. Cincy, Cleveland, SD and Pitt to name a few in the AFC.

Free agent summary by Jeff Howe advocating pursuit of Red Bryant, Jared Allen, Donte Whitner, and Charles Tillman--would be a nice haul.

I like Howe, but if he's dismissing Revis possibilities outright (and to be honest we all know it's a very slim chance at best), and if Pats won't pay "top dollars" for Talib nor Verner, who the hell plays #1 corner for this team?

Isn't he advocating Tillman?

That's what I mean -- Tillman dropped off the face of the earth last year. He played terribly when he was on the field, then was off the field after game 10.

Tillman is not a #1 option for this team.

He was an DPOY candidate in 2012 though. But I tend to agree with you - at 33, it's tough to count on him doing for the Pats what Talib did last year.

Deja vu

That play would make sense for them.  As would cutting Champ Bailey and signing Talib.

Sproles would be a great pickup as a 3rd down option.  Vereen gets hurt a lot but is still good and it would be nice to have another option in there besides Bolden.

What do you think it will cost contract wise?
