Regarding MF8580CDW, Amazon reviewer says doing a scan on this thing takes 5 or 6 steps between PC and printer. Is this correct?

Can't be sure: I saw the reviews that have this problem. Some are dealing with connects to a Mac. In the others, we are not told which of the many ways you can connect are being used. I'm guessing they are connecting via ethernet in a network environment which seems to have been made rather cumbersome. I'm guessing none of these issues appear on a direct usb connect to a PC.

Laser printer bundle:
Canon LBP6200D B&W laser printer + Canon MF3010 B&W laser multifunction  BOTH with promo code CANON50 = $100

Yes the page says promo code CANON40, but right now there's a CANON50 code that works. You get 2 good laser printers and one of them is a full lowend multifunction too.

Do you know what the AC power configuration is on these and other similar models? Are they like most laptops in that their AC brick can function as either a 110 or 220 when abroad without needing a transformer? I know someone in the Philippines and I'd like to send one over in a checked bag with a friend who if flying there. They have 220 power on their grid but the plugs' prong configuration is the same as the US. If not, what might my options be for getting a compatible unit to send there?

Printers, especially laser printers, draw a lot of current (the fuser has to melt the toner into the paper). Printers don't use external brick type power supplies because internally they use considerably higher voltages than 12-18v. Printers also pretty much never have switchable power supplies (110/220). There's no practical way to use US spec printers in that part of the world...sorry.

That's not a coincidence. Unlike Newegg or Tiger or Rakuten, Amazon doesn't really do long term sales or even promote them substantially before they have a sale. Amazon can and will change the price of a product 3 times in one day...they quite often 'react' to a sale elsewhere by adjusting their price.  almost never see anyone posting Amazon sale prices here: they come and go too fast, are listed in 9 different places on the site and rarely last long enough... about all anyone can or should do is check Amazon just before ordering elsewhere to see if they meet or beat a price at that moment...for the record Amazon was $174 when the Newegg sale started... they reacted.

FWIW, I did a quick google search and apparently the 256GB Pro is only something like 4% better than the 250 GB EVO. But the EVO costs 40 less bucks so it seems to me the better choice unless you reaaaaaaally need that speed upgrade.

and the 850 EVO line now has a 5 year warranty just like the Pro, so unless you are going to really hammer these in an enterprise environment, the odds you can/will wear them out is nil...

I hadn't noticed they upped the Pro line to 10 years, impressive but also silly: in my lifetime (which has spanned the entire history of modern computers) there has never been any storage product which has remained in any sense relevant for a decade...I'd also guess that a decade from now, should you need to replace a 250 Gig drive under warranty, the likelihood is Samsung won't even be making anything that small anymore.

Agreed, while the length of the warranty will likely outlive the product's relevant usage time, the important factor about the warranty is it means these drives have a much longer MTBF, and thus the likelihood of failure in the first few years is lower.

Just googled and the MTBF of the 850 EVO is 1.5 million hours, 850 Pro is 2 million hours.

If you're on an AT&T sharing plan and don't use a ton of data, they just introduced a 7GB tier for $75/mo with one month of rollover. That comes with the lower $15 monthly per-line access fee that was only available with the 10GB+ plans before. My wife and I never use more than 3GB per month, so I was able to cut the bill by $25 without any downside.

G.Skill Ares 8 Gb (2x4Gb) DDR3 1600 ram    $58

Newegg Mardi Gras promo sale

Things to note:

Samsung 850 Pro 512 Gb SSD    with promo code $283
  This morning Amazon wants $290

GSkill 8 Gb (2x4Gb) DDR3 1600 ram    $55
Stock Cas 9 timings and 1.5v will work most anywhere.

ASRock H97M Pro4 Micro ATX motherboard     $75
I just did a build using this mb, if you're not planning on overclocking, it has a lot to recommend it in a small formfactor:  latest H97 chipset, virtually all the features of the Z97 except OC, 4 memory slots, DVI & HDMI video out, quality Intel gig ethernet, optical S/PDIF, 2 PCIe slots: 1 PCIe 3.0x16, 1 PCIe 2.0x16.  Very stable, troublefree, with the video and audio options can easily be a very nice media box too.

Lian Li PC-9F Aluminum Midtower case   with promo code $83.50
Today inexpensive cases are using very thin steel, but that does make them lightweight. If you want light but really sturdy, the solution has always been aluminum cases and THE brand in aluminum cases has always been Lian Li, expensive and almost never on sale. This is their modern low end (for them) case really on sale... Amazon wants over $150 for this today.

Canon 8280Cw Color multifunction    with promo code $162
Color laser, wireless, this is as cheap as it gets folks.

Zalman CNPS14X cpu cooler   with promo code and rebate  $10
An example of how you can overthink a product and ruin it. CoolerMaster & Xigmatec originated the big heatpipe cooler that's the most sensible cost effective solution for serious cooling and the 'direct touch' concept of flattening the heatpipes and having direct contact to the cpu.  Zalman, which always charges more and needs to be distinctive decides to reengineer: First they encase the pipes in a solid block, which is a step back, they then place a proprietary thin size fan in the middle of the heatsink, distinctive but no advantage and guarantees you have to toss the whole unit if/when it dies. Finally they use a 140mm fan, not the standard 120 which makes the other brands so large they barely fit in many cases. This Zalman won't fit in MOST midtower cases because it's even bigger.  Result in terms of sales: This Zalman has 23 reviews at Newegg, the 2 primary competing CoolerMaster designs the 212EVO and the 212Plus have 3,090 and 4,427 reviews.

Intel 730 240 Gb SSD   $120
Intel's enterprise MLC Nand drive, now down to consumer prices   best Amazon price this morning is $145

Asus BW-12B1ST  Blu-ray burner   after $20 rebate = $40
DVD burners are now sub $15 commodity items, who do you know who actually burns blu-rays ? yeah, neither do I... but just as a player, blu-ray drives reach commodity price levels, just as they start to become largely irrelevant ?

GSkill Ripjaws 16 Gb (2x8Gb) DDR3 1600 ram    $107
A new low price for 'standard' DDR3, in fact this is slightly substandard ram: Cas 10 and 10-10-10-30 timings @1.5v, but even via synthetic tests the performance difference from standard Cas 9 and 9-9-9-24 timings will amount to maybe 2%. The only real drawback is all Ripjaws memory uses silly heatspreader fins that can be difficult to fit under some of the best cpu heatsinks, otoh most everyone will only use one pair and you can avoid the first memory slot on most mb.

Well, I wouldn't know as I install real AV that would instantly detect it on every machine I see. Looks like it didn't get on to any Thinkpads either. The detection and removal is actually rather trivial in any event.  OTOH, if you buy a laptop or box where the hardware or basic engineering is crappy, good luck finding any fix for that...

LOL actually after further investigation, the Flex 2 line was probably affected, but in past experience Outlet fulfillment is always recent shipments, Lenovo reports they stopped infected installs sometime in January so odds are anythying bought today was probably processed after they caught the problem...

If you have a Micro Center nearby there is a coupon from http://www.retailmenot.com/view/microcenter.com which is $10 off any item of $50 or more. I used it twice already for my CPU and case by ordering online and then picking it up in store. Apparently the $50 minimum isn't enforced online so you can apply it to an item less than that although I haven't tried it myself yet.

Good SSD deals, lots of decent memory deals, the Acer G7 23" IPS monitor for $112 is why nobody should be using anything smaller anymore...

BEWARE: The refurb Lenovo ThinkCentre M90P small formfactor i5 cpu may appear to be a good deal $300...the problem is this is a dual core i5, NOT a quad, in fact this isn't really a desktop computer... it's a laptop repackaged without a screen.... Newegg very carefully does not specify what i5 is used or the exact model M90P...which is detestable, there are a few models of the M90P that have a quad core i5...but these are NOT that model.

Thanks, I put  an order in, and will have to see if it goes through when I pick up at the store.

Tiger Direct

Tiger's bundles usually include one or two junky items that give you pause, the top bundle i7 build for $685 after rebates is a refreshing change, everything in there is decent or better for a quality overclocked i7 system. Easily $100 cheaper than you can assemble this bundle today, the only slightly weak component is the low end Corsair H55 liquid cooler, which has a spotty reliability reputation and definitely will restrict the overclock  (note Corsair warranty on the H55 is 2 years, gives you some idea of how reliable they expect it to be...meanwhile the H60 which is just a few bucks more, has a 5 year warranty)

A perfect example of a typical silly Tiger bundle is below: the i5 bundle for $400. You get the i5-4690K a fine overclockable i5 mated to a decent MSI mb, using the B85 chipset...which does not support overclocking.  WTF is Tiger thinking ?
