TORONTO — Boston Red Sox executive Steve Sanders is believed to be the front-runner to fill the Toronto Blue Jays’ opening for a director of amateur scouting, according to multiple industry sources.
Sanders is currently the Red Sox’s assistant director of amateur scouting, a position he’s held since the beginning of 2015.
The graduate of Northwestern University interned in the baseball operations department of the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2009 and ’10 before joining the Red Sox in the same role in 2011.
The next year he was hired full time as an assistant, amateur and international scouting and in 2014, was promoted to co-ordinator, amateur and international scouting.
Earlier this year, the Blue Jays hired Mike Murov from the Red Sox to serve as their director of baseball operations. And they recently added former Red Sox GM Ben Cherington as a vice-president, baseball operations.
Sanders would take over from Brian Parker, who was fired in August after four solid drafts. His selections included most of the club’s current top prospects, highlighted by Conner Greene, Rowdy Tellez, Max Pentecost, Sean Reid-Foley, Jon Harris and Justin Maese.
