The Raiders got 2 1sts, 2 2nds and $8 million for Gruden to go to TB. That one was insane. This one is respectable by comparison.Absolutely insane if this is what the Saints are getting.

Agree completely. Obviously they backed up the trucked for him, but football wise this feels like it’s destined to under deliver. Unless he really can unlock Wilson, but even then, they are so hamstrung to build around him.Very surprised that Payton chose Denver.
They'll have no picks AND they're stuck with Wilson? Good luck.
The Jets have Nathaniel Hackett now ... maybe Denver could get them interested in a reunionThey'll have no picks AND they're stuck with Wilson? Good luck.
Well, now that he's lost his fastball, not as much as it would have been a few years agoIt obviously wouldn’t happen but I wonder what Belichick’s trade value would be.
Agreed. High draft picks are nice but worth a lot less than an elite coach. The jets got a multiple pro bowler in Shaun Ellis which was a great pick when the Pats got BB and even if BB was only a solid coach I'd say it was worth it.I don't think the compensation is insane at all.
That should be the real speculation. I’ll go with $20m. They’re desperate to salvage something out of Russ.I wanna know how much Sean Payton is getting paid to coach that tire fire.
But how arrogant is Payton?Well, now that he's lost his fastball, not as much as it would have been a few years ago
He must have been comfortable with ownership and that he’d be given several years to sort things out. I think next year will still be rough for them.Very surprised that Payton chose Denver.

This feels kind of right to me. People rightly shit all over McCarthy for only getting Rodgers to one SB but Payton didn’t do any better with Brees and arguably some better teams. Plus, there were some years where I thought he had employed the Don Shula 80s Dolphins Defense – they were absolute garbage defensively.I think Sean Payton is both good enough to make them not embarrassment, Wilson be damned, and not good enough to make them competitive. I'll predict some 9-8 / 7-10 type of seasons where they're roughly as competitive as this year's Packers team.
Everyone has rosy vision of Payton but he had some rough years, and even when the Saints were at their best, routinely underperformed in the playoffs. Now he's no longer in the worst division in professional sports, no longer has a top 10 QB ever, and has neither the salary cap nor the draft capital to fix it.
thank u broHate that the Donkies got a good coach but happy for you, J-Man.
Is Sean Payton an elite coach? He had a Top 20 QB ever for almost 15 seasons and made one Superbowl in a Conference that didn't feature a dominant franchise at the time.Agreed. High draft picks are nice but worth a lot less than an elite coach. The jets got a multiple pro bowler in Shaun Ellis which was a great pick when the Pats got BB and even if BB was only a solid coach I'd say it was worth it.
Wilson is a bigger problem but you have to separate that.
How good would Brees have been if not for Payton? Is Sean Payton an elite coach? He had a Top 20 QB ever for almost 15 seasons and made one Superbowl in a Conference that didn't feature a dominant franchise at the time.
I guess we'll find out, though I'm not sure what one can do with the shitfest that is the Denver offense right now.
Hang on, Fangio isn’t going to the Fish?i am here
i am torn because his last few years in N O were ave but with fangio as DC most likely 8 winnable home games also games @ HOU and @ CHI means 10 wins should be the goal
it all depends on is wilson done if he is then denver is f'up utill 2026 if not then there is going to be 3 playoff teams the next few years in the afc west
i am shocked but to me denver was a 9-8 team on paper last year but awful QB Coach and 22 players on I R meant 5 wins
Tough to say. He moved to New Orleans in a dome right around the time the NFL started changing rules to greatly benefit the offenses. He was putting up good numbers with mediocre talent in San Diego for a couple years, and moved to a much better situation. I will say Payton definitely seems to have an eye for talent on offense. And yet he chose to go play for Russell Wilson, it's just odd to me this is the situation he finally came back for. We shall see.How good would Brees have been if not for Payton?
I guess all I'm saying is that it's a big assumption to say that Brees made Payton look good and not the other way around. I honestly don't know. But great coaches tend to make their QBs look better as well.Tough to say. He moved to New Orleans in a dome right around the time the NFL started changing rules to greatly benefit the offenses. it sounds good right now denver has not had a plan since 2016 and that is joe eillis's fauit because@j-man Do you feel like the Broncos new management are trying slowly to turn the organisation around?
The Broncos organisation seemed to lack direction the past... I dunno... half decade, since Pat Bowlen stepped down from day to day management in 2014 or maybe after the 2015 season and SB win... But are you optimistic that the new ownership group has set a direction, and seems to have a plan?
yeah he is torn between MIA SF and denHang on, Fangio isn’t going to the Fish?
I can’t think of any HCs that went back to where they were fired to take a coordinator role. My money is on him ending up in SF.yeah he is torn between MIA SF and den
and for pats fans u shouild bring in denver DC from last year for a year if u merge his ideas with bill u wouild have a top 2 def
Yeah, two for sure plus the Minneapolis Miracle mentioned here as well.Really should have been two.

Yes.Is Sean Payton an elite coach? He had a Top 20 QB ever for almost 15 seasons and made one Superbowl in a Conference that didn't feature a dominant franchise at the time.

How do you know? I can never find data on coach salaries. This is like WR money, right? That is a lot of money for a guy with 1 Superbowl win even though he had a top 5 QB for 13 years.
Valid point on salaries, I feel like I have heard that BB makes around 10 but maybe it's insane. How do you know? I can never find data on coach salaries. This is like WR money, right?
They’ve got Walmart money, what do they, or the fans, care? Go get the best available coach. There is no opportunity cost to overpaying a coach if you’ve got pockets that deep. That is a lot of money for a guy with 1 Superbowl win even though he had a top 5 QB for 13 years.
I had no idea the bolded happened but this very good wrote up helps explains why: https://www.si.com/nfl/broncos/news/4-reasons-the-denver-broncos-passed-on-hiring-kyle-shanahan-as-head-coachit sounds good right now denver has not had a plan since 2016 and that is joe eillis's fauit because
A in 2017 he told elway no on kyle shannyen
and that started the fall plus with bad qb picks as well
2023 might be rough because of the lack of cap space draft picks
but in 2024 denver shouild be that 5th 6th team in the afc
and bolwin stepped away in 2014
Still can't believe they didn't call that. I would have loved to watch a Brady vs Brees SuperBowl!Really should have been two.

The number floating around on BB is $20-$25m / year.Valid point on salaries, I feel like I have heard that BB makes around 10 but maybe it's insane.
The assumption has always been that coaches don't make what blue-chip players make, maybe that is starting to change.
My daughter still has flashbacks. We watched that game together while on vacation. She joined us from College where she adopted the Saints.Still can't believe they didn't call that. I would have loved to watch a Brady vs Brees SuperBowl!
