What does all of this running around really do for the show? Charlie Sheen was awesome but no one talks about it now.

I can't see how either of these really help the show, is the idea that if they can bring a few new listeners in that they might stick around?
Not to answer for Judge, but you're already onto the answer here. Media/entertainment is fickle - TV, radio, sports, you name it... Its a 'what have you done for me lately' industry and the only way to increase listenership (or even just maintain the status quo) consistent bits like this need to be produced or risk hands turning the dial. So while no one talks about the Sheen thing now (like no one will talk about this Canseco thing in three months) this is the type of stuff that is going to maintain the listener base.

HB - I couldn't say for sure, but I do know that on a show like T&R where it's so oriented towards entertainment and comedy those types of stunts are very crucial when it comes to things like ratings wars with stations like WEEI. Adolfo is at every single Red Sox home game asking drunk people questions, Rich gets Sheen to come on the air after a performance based on the audience's reaction when he said his name on the microphone, these things all sort of breed into each other. It's true that nobody talks about the Sheen thing anymore, but who's really talking about Charlie Sheen anymore? It wasn't meant to be one of those legendary radio bits that's talked about forever in the annals of broadcasting history, but at the time when they did it, who else was even close to working that hard to entertain their listeners who were literally frothing at the mouth for more Sheen?

T&R's biggest strength is the fact that thus far they have refused to settle in. Rich is constantly testing out new bits, Fred has fresh material every morning, and the two never fall into old, boring repetitive tropes (aside from the Drunken Recaps, but that's questionable, since the T&R presence at every single Boston sports home game is a major reason why they're winning every morning)

All that being said, this Jose Canseco thing seems like a bit of a misfire, just judging from the FB comments in response, and the overall "meh" attitude towards Canseco since the steroids thing died down. If they can get him on the air for hits then the potential for comedy is high, but the announcement fell a bit flat, IMO.

Didn't tune in this morning but I thought they were pretty great in regards to the concussion stuff yesterday. And the high school football coach call was hilarious for all the wrong reasons.

Fred was cracking me up ad libbing over those old NBA songs, which were funny unto themselves. "Hi, this is Tommy Heinsohn for parachute pants"

I meant to come in here and post this when I got to work, his Tommy Heinson and Z Cavarichis imitation had me cackling in the car.
The late 60s Celts' broadcasting team (66-67 through 67-69) was Heinsohn on play-by-play with a host of color men, usually Red (of course Red made Tommy sound like Mr. Objectivity).

Heinsohn's commercial spots and program notes were hilarious.

Getting Tanguay to read "50 Shades of Grey" (aka Mommy porn)......... :rolling: :rolling:
Missed a bit of it, can't wait for the podcast to be up!

Also sounds like they're trashing Curt Schilling for the third day in a row over the missed loan payment. :D

This call is one of the weirdest things I've heard on the radio. Guy called up and sounds like he's either going to kill himself or kill his girlfriend and wants to talk it out to Fred on the air, now the guys mom is on the phone with Fred.

Hey Scal, this is um Adolfo, I'm umm calling, no wait, to see if you are coming or what, not really, but you can call me or not, not really sure, dont care, actually yeah, call us or not just checking..........

Yeah, I don't believe for a second that Rich would have replayed that if he hadn't listened to it beforehand. I think he played it for two reasons, one reason was hoping that it would be Fred's Howard Stern moment when Stern stopped some guy from jumping off a bridge and the other was to hope the guy was listening again and might go get some help.

In March, I asked WEEI program director Jason Wolfe about Toucher & Rich’s bomb-throwing.
“Sticks and stones…” he said in an e-mail. “If listeners want compelling, entertaining, and smart sports talk, they’re going to listen to Dennis & Callahan.”
Delusional.

Great article, i was waiting for it come online. I was hoping for a bit more in depth stuff on the transition, especially how Fred and Rich prepared for it, since it's obvious they built a game plan going into it.

Went back in this forum and looked at this thread, interesting things how played out. Most people were right about Tanguay...

http://sonsofsamhorn.net/topic/47148-new-fm-sports-talk-for-boston/page__st__150

T&R are a terrible fit if The Sports Hub wants to set itself apart as an alternative to EEI. They have six or seven bits that they do over and over and over and over and over and over. Only Fred seems to care anything about sports, but he doesn't ever say anything insightful or interesting. They're like D&C except exchanging misogyny for racism.
Again - Toucher & Rich are already on at the same time, competing in the morning drive. They are simply moving down the dial. It's possible that their ratings will go up when they drop the crappy music and get some big promotion out of the new network, but it's still them against D&C.
Toucher & Rich come off as casual sports fans at best. This morning show could be a trainwreck, especially when Dennis & Callahan are interviewing Terry Francona or Tom Brady and Toucher & Rich are countering with their drunken Red Sox recap bit.
JMOH hits the nail on the head:
Toucher and Rich are big-time hockey fans. Even when they were Atlanta they were hockey guys and they have Aaron Ward on Wednesday (which was a fun listen). I don't think that they'll have much of a problem talking sports at the D&C level.
Rocco pipes in:
I agree with you and Dalton for the most part........but are you sure you want to throw Dickerson in there? He's WICKED passionate about the C's and from what I can gather, he does his homework. Now I'm not saying he's a legit talent for a radio gig, but I absolutly put him on a different level than Tanguay.

As for Felger, it really depends on the show/topic. If he's doing "schtick" he fucking sucks. If he's talking passionately about a topic he knows a bit about, say football, he's actually pretty good.

What this station needs is Mad Dog to completely fail at Sirius and pay him big bucks to come here. He would destroy the big show.

Other than that, your gonna see more of the same........this new station will probably but up more of a fight than others past, but they'll likely tumble in the end. EEI is just a fucking god damned monster.
The other thing that he won't have (I hope) is the Stupid Show's bizarre choice to (seemingly) prefer that callers who get on the air be shockingly stupid. Look, I know it's somewhat self-selecting. But if someone calls them up and slurs, stutters and can't get to an incorrect point (that could be expressed in 10 seconds) in under 2 minutes, they probably shouldn't go on the air. It's pathetic to hear some of these people who must've flunked out of elementary school. Maybe these are the only people who can make Glen Ordway feel intelligent. But it's crap to listen to. The level of discourse should be above the median of the audience not in something like the 20th percentile.
Felger won't stand for this and good call. Bad phones = hang up;.

Alright, that's the third person from the Celtic family to be on TSH in three days. This is starting to get interesting, when is the Celtics' radio contract up?

So it's been two seasons? Doubtful that they'd only agree to a two-season deal. So you can throw that idea out the window.

So ... T&R are urging fans to prints and wear Tim Donaghy masks at the game tonight. Here's hoping they have a ton of them to pass out outside the garden and that people actually wear them. It would be tremendous.

I hate to say it but Fred was fucking horrendous this morning trying to discuss the Tim Thomas situation and Wallach didn't help. All he needed to do was take 15 minutes to read or even listen to his own station over the weekend to know that:

1. Thomas doesn't need to be paid and would still count against the cap next year regardless of whether he sits out or retires.
2. The reason a team looking to hit the cap floor would take him is so they could still hit the minimum threshold and not actually have to pay the player.

The fact that he didn't know those two things this morning and tried to form an opinion when this all came out on Friday was ridiculous.

I ended up switching to D&C and heard a great long interview with Jeff Van Gundy.

At least he acknowledged it becuase for something that had been out for a few days he sounded idiotic, especially considering the ramifications weren't difficult to comprehend and 98.5 is the Bruins Flagship so you would expect him to know more.

Like I said Wallach didn't help any, but you would think Fred would have an intern give him a quick 2 minute run down before he took the call or formed an opinion.

Gresh made the same mistakes in the afternoon -- not a good showing by the station that built itself on the backs of Bruins coverage.

Apparently Adolofo's maternal grandfather shot his dad in the shoulder from point blank range sometime within the past year for watering the lawn against his wishes. Even better, the only reason Adolfo found out about it was because his Aunt put it on Facebook.

Glad I didn't kill mysef getting to the radio when I got to the office.

The way they teased it I was interested and got in the office and forgot about it, kind of glad I did. Was it at least humorous or was it another Canseco big build up, but "that's it?" announcement.

Ugh, I'm glad that I was listening to my iPod this morning. This sort of thing bores the crap out of me. When I used to listen to Stern, I hated this sort of crap. I don't care about the losers that inhabit the universe of Howard Stern or Toucher and Rich. I like the hosts and that's pretty much it.
