Hell of a hit by Don Jones on Harry Douglas to force the fumble on the punt and stem the tide of Atlanta momentum.

Just a fantastic win.
Very big play. Also credit Denney for diving in the pile and coming out with the ball. Amazing start to the season!

Great, great win. First time miami's been totallly outplayed and stole a game in a long, long time (nee Marino). QB's do matter! lol. big game Monday night

the bad: maimi has no clue how to pick up a blitz. the RBs, both of them, are awful. As were clay and sims. And clabo is a disaster. amazingly, falcons did not blitz once on the last drive. miami was in five wide, maybe that is why? if so, why didn't they go that formation more and earlier?  The LBers were atrocious both in tackling and coverage. and Dmitiri patterson and the rookies need to come back soon!

Team is really banged up. hopefully Wake and the other defneders will be back by Monday. but yeesh, they have 5-6 reserves playing in the 4th quarter

Best win since the widcat win over the Pats

I thought I spotted 1 or 2 blitzes in the beginning of the final drive. On one, Thomas stepped up and cut block the LB effectively.

What about Rishard Matthews making a decent cameo in this one? Egnew also got his first catch! Haha, plenty to love in this one.

Yeah, this was a weird game.   On the one hand, you've got to be ecstatic--a win is a win.  But there are a ton of questions Dolphins have got to be asking themselves tomorrow.

I think you can definitely give a lot of credit to the Falcons' coaching staff for a strong game plan, considering their crazy injury situation.  But frankly, the Dolphins D underperformed.   Luckily, great special teams play neutralized that.  How about the rookie, Caleb Sturgis?  I joked about the kicker competition during training camp, but this kid is nails.

I need to re-watch this one and process a bit; but it's nice to steal one for a change. 3-0, baby.
If you do re-watch, be sure to have a barf bag on you when you re-watch Lamar Miller's drop during that last drive.  A likely TD squandered.  I was convinced the game was over after I saw that.

you are right, they sent five on the second play of the drive. but that was it. Egnew? Rishard?

Wait, has Wallace complained yet? lolol

Lamar Miller has so much ability...but he has to block better and he has to catch that pass

Young players will make mistakes ... but it's so much easier for them to learn from them and move on when the team is winning. I still have high hopes for Miller; he just might be a year away from being a true weapon. He's still raw.

Another seemingly positive thing: in all 3 games, someone different has had a big game. Week 1 was Hartline. Week 2 was Wallace and Clay. This week, I felt like Gibson had some big catches in the second half and had his breakout game.

When Tamnehill spreads the ball around like that, it makes Miami a difficult team to gameplan for. Credit the offensive scheme, and also credit Tannehill for taking what the defense gives him and not trying to force the ball to Wallace all the time.

Where do you guys stand on the Tanny interception? I thought the ball was thrown high, but should have been handled by Clay.
Yea tough throw down the seam. Had to be up high for any chance of a play. Clay got his mitts on it. Credit Moore for making a good diving play on the tip. Don't know if you can hang that on Tannehill really.

You have to figure that next week's game is the toughest game of, not only the brutal 5 game opening stretch, but probably the season for Miami. Going to New Orleans to face the Saints on MNF. Not only are the Saints a great team, they possess probably the top TE in football in Jimmy Graham, and Miami has had a tough time defending TE's all season.

It'll be interesting to see the Dolphins injury report throughout the week. They're gonna need all hands on deck to slow down the Saints offense.

That throw was a lil high risk but Clay should have put his hands on it. All in all, a great great win. In a way glad they have an extra day of rest for Monday night.

The Dolphins are now headed into MNF next week vs. the Saints, most likely their most difficult game of the season, depending on how the Pats pull things together by the tail-end of the season. I'd be shocked if they pulled out a victory. I think it's important "we" keep it close, don't get any less healthy, and keep the positive mojo headed into the home game vs. the Ravens. 4-1 headed into the BYE, with a game against the Bills in Miami in Week 7 would be pretty fucking awesome. I'm getting way too ahead of myself, but anything less than 5-1 headed into "our" first showdown with the Pats would be a major disappointment for me.

Edit: I know these first 5 games were considered Miami's "tough stretch", but facing off against NE, Cincy, and then Tampa (on the road) in Weeks 8-10 is no freakin' cake walk. Going 4-0 vs. the Jets/Bills might have to happen considering the competition in the AFC this year.

I'm more or less on the same boat. I know before the start of the season, we all mostly agreed that Miami needed to come out of this stretch 2-3, and 3-2 would be awesome. I don't anticipate them beating the Saints at home on MNF, but I do expect them to be competitive. I also expect them to come back home and beat the Ravens the following week. 4-1 heading into the bye would be amazing with the softer part of their schedule coming up.

The Dolphins are first in the NFL in Redzone efficiency through three weeks (Denver might have something to say about that tonight).  Regardless, they're scoring touchdowns at an 87% clip.  That's awfully impressive stuff.

A little more perspective....as klunky as these first 3 wins may have seemed, along with yesterday's win coming against a presumed Super Bowl contender, look what happened in the games of Miami's other opponents:  Cleveland gives up its best player days earlier, then promptly beats up on Adrian Peterson and some other "football" players on the road, and Indy manhandles San Francisco, also on the road.

As for the next 3-game set, while I agree that coming out of it at 5 - 1 is reasonably possible, I'd find it difficult to rationalize 4 - 2 as a major disappointment.  Obviously, the Dolphins would have no business losing to Buffalo, especially after the bye, but as you say, they aren't expected to beat New Orleans in their house and the Baltimore matchup looks to be a draw.   Yet if we go into the bye riding a 2-game losing streak, all rationality aside, I totally agree that it would feel like a major disappointment, not to mention adding excess pressure heading into the Buffalo game.

Could you say that's inversely proportional to their red zone defense?  I guess when you've got those two things going on, it can make up for a lot of other deficiencies (especially when opposing kickers are missing late-game field goals from the red zone).

And completely unsustainable.

I know nobody is expecting them to score TD's at 87%, but even if they are top 5 in the NFL in redzone %, you're talking about closer to 65% for the year. Since we're about 1/5 of the way through the season, there's a pretty heavy dose of regression on it's way.

Luckily the team seems to have the defense that can keep them in low scoring games.

I know people here were expecting a win over the Falcons last week. I don't care that the Falcons were banged up and that the Dolphins stole the game. it was impressive and has slightly changed my perception on them. I'm going to be keeping an eye on this team.

No one ever said it was sustainable.  But its encouraging for a team with a lack of 'traditional' redzone weapons to have found so much success there early in the season (small sample size and all).

I know I was concerned this offseason regarding roster construction at the skill positions for precisely this reason, which was only ratcheted up when Keller was lost for the year.  Though so far, all is well.

Thomas running tough on his goal-line TD was nice to see, and I'm excited about the development of Charles Clay. His versatility in this offense makes him irreplaceable, as well as (potentially) deadly in the redzone. I'm hoping that Sims and Egnew gradually become more involved. If this comes to fruition, there's so much Miami can do inside the 20. With the 3 wide-outs, Clay, Sims, Egnew, and Miller, Sherman can go a lot of different routes to secure 7.

The Miami Dolphins might be forced to play without two-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Cameron Wake for at least a week or two.
Sources say a series of tests Wake underwent on Monday revealed "a mild" medial collateral ligament sprain in his left knee. The injury won't require surgery, but will likely sideline him two to three weeks.

Could've been a lot worse.  At least he should be ready to go for the division games against the Bills and Pats after the bye week.

And they have only made 8 redzone trips (Seattle has 14, by comparison), so you definitely have a sample size issue. At 65%, that's 5.2 TDs vs. the 7 they have now - considering they won by 13, 4 and 4 points they could still be 3-0 or could have played 2 overtime games in hypothetical fairyland.

Over the rest of the season, 65% vs 87% (and assuming they make 3 RZ trips per game, which was about league average last year) means approx. 9 less TDs though - that's 2.8 ppg given they convert all those trips into FGs which is probably a stretch.

Too bad I have no idea if this thought exercise is in any way useful.

A pretty interesting read on the Dolphins struggles to protect Tannehill:

According to data from Pro Football Focus (subscription required), the amount of time that passed on average before Ryan Tannehill's 14 sacks was seventh-lowest in the league.

Also, using Pro Football Focus' data we see that Ryan Tannehill's average time until his throw attempt is third-lowest in the entire NFL at approximately 2.3 seconds. Only Matt Stafford, of the Detroit Lions, and Andy Dalton, of the Cincinnati Bengals, get the football out of their hands more quickly, on average. The median average time to a throw attempt is a little higher than 2.5 seconds.
Yet the fact remains that Tannehill has taken a staggering 14 sacks, leading the league.
This paints the picture of very poor pass protection.

Ultimately, the protection issues need to improve or Tannehill will not last the season.  He has taken an absolute beating in the pocket to this point.

Also, something needs to be done with Daniel Thomas.  He doesn't bring enough to the table in the running game to make up for consistently blowing assignments in pass protection.

this also takes mike wallace out of the game. Wallace's big plays with pittsburgh often came when rothlesberger broke the pocket or avoided a rush and extended the play. I would not be shocked to see Miami roll Tannehill out, where he ahs been very accurate in his career, and try to get the ball downfield to wallace. I read that of the 14 sacks, 6 came on plays designed to go to wallace downfield.

I'm much less worried about Tannehill and the offense than I am about the defense and stopping Brees and Graham. I feel like we'll see much of the same from Tannehill. He'll spread the ball and make his reads. Hopefully they can keep it close so it doesn't fall on Tannehill's shoulders to get into a shootout with Brees.

Bend, but don't break. The Saints have struggled in the redzone thus far this season.

Came Wake warmed up, but was ultimately ruled inactive. Odrick is sliding to DE, and Soliai is playing. Odrick will most likely slide inside with Dion Jordan/Shelby coming in on passing downs.

Both Jamar Taylor and Will Davis are healthy, but only Taylor is active for this one. Interesting.

Easier said than done, but if the Dolphins can get a score on D or Special Teams tonight (while winning the turnover battle), I like their chances.  It feels like they're due.  One way or another, though, I hope they can keep it close.  I think that would make a statement  in and of itself.

Looked to me like Tannehill tried to do too much after feeling the pressure from Brees et al putting up points. Both the scramble that led to a fumble and the int before the half were unneeded.
If he can reduce those mistakes the future is bright for Miami- he is a legitimately skilled accurate pocket passer.

I couldn't stand how our plucky little thread plummeted to the bottom of the page after the deflation of last week's loss, so I had to bump it.  Come on folks, we're 3 - 1--the season is still well within our beloved Dolphins' control!

Hmm, I suppose I should offer something of "substance" to justify the bump.  I think it's safe to say that it wasn't the loss last week that was so disappointing, rather the holes on this team that were so glaringly exposed, and seem to be widening.  The offensive line is THE major concern, of course, and I'd like to think Sherman & Co. will stop assuming the weak links will suddenly sprout skills that are no longer there and start drawing up a game plan to minimize the potential for damage those weak links present.  I don't pretend to be an X's and O's kind of fan, but my hope would be to get our two fastest guys more actively involved and on the same page with our QB.  Early and often.  Let the speed of Miller and Wallace, along with the roll out ability of Tanny dictate the flow of the game.

Also, I'm probably being unreasonable, but aside from game 1 vs. Cleveland, I am a bit disappointed in this defense's and special teams' inability to generate game-changing plays.   A score once in a while would be nice (and would do wonders for my fantasy team), but at least some long returns of picks or kicks to have us starting some drives around the red zone.  I thought that would be the thing that would turn finally turn this defense from good to great.  I know injuries have been a factor, or maybe I'm just greedy, but I'm still hopeful they'll step it up a notch.

Anyway, a win today all but erases last week's poor showing.  Here's hoping Wake is active and a factor, along with the aforementioned playmakers.  See y'all on the other side.

Haha, thanks for the "bump", Dwainw; I was actually popping on here to do the exact same thing. I'm definitely not deflated over last week's game, I just can't stand the week-to-week overreaction that comes with the NFL. I guess it can be fun when Miami wins, but after a blow-out loss, it's intolerable. That's usually when I take a brief break and catch up on my real-world bullshit.

I re-watched the game on Thursday and came away feeling better about it overall. The Saints are a top-5 team; and at home, they're damn near unbeatable. That said, the Dolphins had the ball with 2 minutes left in the first half and were in position to take the lead heading into halftime. What more can you ask for? Take away the 2 initial and costly Tanny turnovers, and the game takes a completely different turn. If there's one player I know will get better each week, it's Tannehill; so I'm less concerned with others about this type of game repeating itself later in the season.

I know this can be said for any given week, but I think today's game is huge. Sure, if we head into the BYE at 3-2, we'll be fine (and in fact, before the season started, I said I would have been fine with 2-3), but the Dolphins have a fantastic opportunity to jump-start their playoff chances with a win. A loss today would mean that "we" are again toeing the line between contender and pretender.

Right now, the Dolphins are the better team. The Ravens are struggling offensively and will be missing two of their better wide-outs, Jacoby Jones and Marlon Brown. They're also not running the ball well -- in fact, they've been horrible. In Miami, there's no way they should take this one.

I think the defense will show up today, leaving it up to Tannehill and co. to move the ball, avoid turnovers, and score touchdowns. Attention Sherman: How 'bout a little unpredictability?

The Fins weather the initial storm and go into the Half up 13-6. The Dolphins' offense started out extremely slow, but Tannehill and co. caught their rhythm on their final drive. Right now, the Ravens are incredibly predictable. They can't run the ball or protect Flacco; and Torrey Smith is their only true weapon at wide-out. I'd love to see a big run by Miller for this one is final.

Yup.  Valiant effort by Tannehill, despite everything (and seemingly everyone) working against him.  At this point I'm not as worried about the 90-sack pace this offensive line is on as I am the 1 dead quarterback pace.

100 sacks. 100 drops. And a blown home game.
The play calling at times was laughable. Tannehill was sacked a lot, but I saw several times where if he just steps up, he has a perfectly clean pocket to throw in. He has to sense the pressure better and step up in the pocket.

Hugely disappointing dropping that game at home and having a chance to go into the bye tied for first. The bye comes at a good time. They have to protect Tannehill better. That's #1. They have to pound it into Tannehill's head that he has to step up in the pocket and stop being a stationary target. They need to call more plays that get Tannehill on the move. He's shown he's a gifted passer making plays on the move. It's stunning to me they want to keep him in the pocket so much.

The drops have to be fixed too. You can't have 3 drops on your final drive.

Disappointed, but the Fins survive the brutal portion of their schedule 3-2 and legitimately in the playoff hunt.

This is as disappointed as I've been in quite some time after a loss.
Though some of that was due to learning that Jeff Ireland has already gotten an extension?  I somehow missed that news.

It's just so frustrating when it is the same issues and concerns year-in and year-out.
The injuries on the Defensive side as well.  It's hard to criticize that group, and tough to beat good teams with that many quality players out.

The big positive to me was Tannehill - When I think of what a "Franchise QB" is my definition is a player that regardless of the situation, they give you a chance to win each week.  I realize his pocket awareness can improve, but I certainly had the feeling today that he met that definition.  With the total lack of a running game and the way the line was playing overall, I take it as a positive that they had the ball with a chance to win, and weren't blown out.

I can't argue with the first sentence in bold, but the pocket was collapsing on him on almost every passing play.  Also, a couple times the announcers mentioned that Tannehill should have thrown the ball away when he was essentially immediately surrounded and smothered.

As for the second sentence, I couldn't agree more.  I've felt that way since week 1.

There was one play he was on the move and made a great pass to I think Wallace, but only ONE play, and not designed he just ran out of the pocket. Its week 5 and they still have not put some roll out plays for him. 3-2 is a very good start for this team, with 2 turnovers to none they should have had this game but OL is a complete mess

Exactly. The play to keep the last drive alive on fourth down was Tannehill just making a play rolling out on his own. He's shown he's very accurate on the move, why they haven't taken advantage of one of his clear strengths is beyond me. Again, if your O-Line has major issues, why would you want your quarterback to be a statue? That's on the coaching staff. They have some work to do on the bye week.

Also, give credit to Tannehill for bouncing back after a rough outing in MNF. After having 4 turnovers last week, he did a good job of protecting the football, especially against a D that thrives on taking the ball away.

The bye will let the Fins rest up, and hopefully come back a little healthier after the break. Wake, Patterson and Ellerbe are banged up. Miami has Buffalo coming to town. There is zero, and I mean zero, reason why they should lose to Buffalo at home coming off the bye. I also would like to see Dion Jordan in for the majority of the snaps at DE. He's generating pressure and making plays out there. He appears to be 100% healthy, expand his role.

This was a horrific home loss for a team with WC aspirations.

The offensive line is in shambles.  Tyson Clabo has somehow managed to be worse than the Marc Colombo circus we all endured last year at RT.

Offensive tackle: This is troubling: Not only is Jonathan Martin one of nine NFL linemen that have allowed at least four sacks (Dolphins right tackle Tyson Clabo also has given up four), but runs behind Martin are averaging a puny 1.9 yards per carry, which explains why Pro Football Focus rates him 65th of 69 tackles (tied with Clabo) as a run blocker.

Conversely, Jake Long –-- who left for St. Louis after the Dolphins offered less than he sought --- has permitted two sacks and is 11th as a run-blocker. Kansas City’s Branden Albert, whom Miami possibly could have acquired for a second-round pick if it had been willing, has relinquished one sack and is 42nd as a run blocker.

Overall, PFF ranks Long 17th, Albert 25th and Martin 37th

Jim Turner's seat must be getting awfully hot.  Has anyone improved since he took over OL duties?  The guys either aren't talented enough (Ireland has had six years to build a functional line) or they're not getting proper coaching.  Or both.  There is no other explanation.

I feel like Pouncey and Incognito have done well under him. If you look at a scheme fit, for running a zone blocking scheme, Pouncey is the one guy who fits the smaller, but more athletic mold. Jerry is the exact opposite of what you want. He can't pull for shit, but they don't have a better alternative. That's one reason I thought they might select Jonathan Cooper in the draft. He'd have been a great compliment to Pouncey at LG, and you could put Incognito at RG. Martin and Clabo just flat out aren't getting it done.

The entire team needs to get better at pass protection, that's the bottom line.

Like the Dolphins defense, I feel rested and revitalized following last week's BYE. It's nice to see Patterson return to action -- it'll be interesting to see how many weeks he can stay on the field. There are "rumors" circulating that the Fins could be looking for HB and/or OL help via trade. The goal? Improved pass protection.

I can't see them dealing away picks to get anyone significant. I saw a rumor about MJD from Jacksonville, but no way Ireland deals a 2nd or 3rd round pick for a half season rental of MJD. There's likely no reinforcements coming. They'll have to make what they have now work.

The other thing I've been thinking about is, have the Dolphins been holding some things back until divisional play starts? Do they have some wrinkles that they're going to add? Maybe not against Buffalo, but definitely against NE in 2 weeks.

I'd be very surprised if any deals were made, but there's no way MJD costs a high pick. If you're JAX, and you're not looking to re-sign him (and they probably aren't), you'd most likely be inclined to take what you can get while you can. If he does get dealt, I'd expect it to be done for a 5th or perhaps a conditional 4th.

Edit: I hear the "holding back" argument from fans every so often, and it doesn't make much sense to me. The Dolphins were 3-0 heading into weeks 4 and 5. Don't you think that offensively, everything would be on the table in order to try to achieve 5-0 --- which would almost guarantee them a playoff spot? I don't think coaches hold back very much (if at all) from week to week, when every game is so important.
