As may be seen, the Red Sox haven't had much luck when drafting pitchers with high picks. I am assuming that "via" has to do with a trade, possibly swapping one higher pick for lower ones.

------- 1s /40th -- Kris Johnson
------- 1s /44th -- Caleb Clay
2007 -- 1s /55th -- Nick Hagadone
2008 -- 1s /45th -- Bryan Price

Comp picks for losing free agents under old CBAs. Craig Hansen was the Derek Lowe comp pick, Daniel Bard was the Johnny Damon comp pick & Matt Barnes was the Victor Martinez comp pick.

Not going to proof read it all, but Rogers was 3/99 & Duffy was 4/115. Also, in 2015 they drafted RHP Travis Lakins 6/171, the round before Ben Taylor.

& for further fun (doing just the very 1st pick from each group each year), here's the bWAR results of pitchers v. batters. I won't count Kelly's negative WAR as a pitcher for either side.

2000 - Pitchers lose -1.8 to N/A
2001 - Pitchers lose N/A to 8.3
2002 - Pitchers win 43.5 to N/A
2003 - Pitchers lose -0.4 to 9.9
2004 - Pitchers lose N/A to 51.9
2005 - Pitchers lose -1.9 to 31.2
2006 - Pitchers win 8.5 to N/A
2007 - Pitchers lose -0.2 to N/A
2008 - Pitchers lose -0.2 to N/A
2009 - Pitchers win 5.4 to -0.6
2010 - Pitchers lose -1.6 to N/A
2011 - Pitchers win 4.3 to -0.3
2012 - Pitchers win 0.9 to -0.3
2013 - Everyone loses N/A to N/A
2014 - Pitchers win 4.5 to -0.1
2015 - Pitchers lose 0.6 to 16.1
2016 - Everyone loses N/A to N/A
2017 - Pitchers win 5.8 to N/A
2018 - Pitchers lose N/A to 2.3
2019 to 2023 - Everyone loses N/A to N/A

So from these 24 drafts, so far 14 pitchers (8 with positive bWAR) have made it to MLB, totaling 67.5 bWAR & 10 hitters (6 with positive bWAR) have made it to MLB, totaling 118.4 bWAR.

So four + pitchers: Lester, Buchholz, Barnes, Bard
five + position players: Pedroia, Ellsbury, JBJ, Benintendi, Casas. Maybe six, if you count Lowrie.
Adding Buchholz (16.8 bWAR) & Bard (8.5 bWAR) to the pitchers and JBJ (16.9 bWAR) & Lowrie (15.8 bWAR) to the hitters, would make 82.8 & 151.1 respectively.

Categorizing the pitching draftees:

Home Runs (OK, maybe not the best name for a pitching category, but you get the idea):
2002 -- 2nd/57th -- Jon Lester - Will probably get some HoF votes, even though I don't expect him to advance

Decent Players:
2005 -- 1s /42nd -- Clay Buchholz - Tantalizing promise never quite fulfilled, but still was great in stretches
2006 -- 1st/28th -- Daniel Bard - Boston career cut short, but he was a really good reliever for 3 seasons here.
2009 -- 2nd/77th -- Alex Wilson - Forgot that he won a game for the 2013 Sox. Part of the Porcello trade, and became a solid bullpen piece for some really bad Tigers teams. Reasonably good outcome for a 2nd rounder.
2011 -- 1st/19th -- Matt Barnes - Was key reliever in the 2018 title team.
2017 -- 1st/24th -- Tanner Houck - Jury is still out, but he could have a role as a mid-rotation or key bullpen piece.

Became Trade Capital, but never amounted to much elsewhere:
2000 -- 1st/22nd -- Phil Dumatrait - Traded for Scott Williamson in 2003
2005 -- 1st/26th -- Craig Hansen - Was pretty hyped as a K artist in the minors. Never did much, then became a part of the Manny-for-Jason Bay trade.
2005 -- 1st/47th -- Michael Bowden - Netted us one Marlon Byrd, yeah...
2007 -- 1s /55th -- Nick Hagadone - Part of the Victor Martinez trade. Was a non-descript reliever for a few non-descript Cleveland teams
2008 -- 1s /45th -- Bryan Price - Part of the same Victor Martinez trade; pitched 2 innings in the majors
2008 -- 3rd/108 -- Kyle Weiland - was really bad, so the fact he was part of the Mark Melancon trade is not upsetting
2010 -- 1s /39th -- Anthony Ranaudo - Typically uneven rookie season a starter - traded for Robbie Ross.
2014 -- 1st/33rd -- Michael Kopech - Classic example of why some prospects should get traded. For all of the criticisms of Dombrowski, I'll note for the 1000th time that none of the players traded for Sale are really missed (Moncada is decent but has yet to make an All Star game)

Never Amounted to Much:
2003 -- 2nd/49th -- Abe Alvarez - Started one game, but lost, for 2004 team. Was pretty meh otherwise.
2006 -- 1s /40th -- Kris Johnson - Never played for Boston
2011-- 1s /36th -- Henry Owens - Brings back bad memories of his 40mph fastball
2012 -- 1s /31st -- Brian Johnson - I did forget he started 13 games for the 2018 team, and acquitted himself well.
2012 -- 1s /37th -- Pat Light - Somehow netted us Abad for a season
2015 -- 7th/201st - Ben Taylor - 7th round pick so who cares

Never Made Majors or Not Signed:
2001 -- 2nd/61st -- Matt Chico (not signed) - Had one average-ish season for the Nationals in 2007 before flaming out.
2004 -- 2nd/95th -- Andrew Dobies
2006 -- 1s /44th -- Caleb Clay
2013 -- 1st/7th --- Trey Ball - Eeek!

Yet to make majors, but looking like a bust:
2016 -- 1st/12th -- Jay Groome - Good riddance
2018 -- 3rd/100th - Durbin Feltman - Remember him?
2019 -- 3rd/107th - Ryan Zeferjahn - Looking too late for him.

Too early to tell:
2020 -- 4th/118th - Jeremy Wu-Yelland - Not looking like a prospect
2021 -- 4th/105th - Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz - Just turned 20
2022 -- 2nd/49th -- Dalton Rogers - Meh
2023 -- 4th/95th - Matt Duffy - All of 4 innings pitched in A-ball

To this day I'm convinced that Ryan Zeferjahn was the illegitimate son of Sidd Finch.

A trip down memory lane. Not a ton of success but the mlb draft is always a bit of a crapshoot, especially when picking in the latter half of the draft which the Sox did for most of this timeframe.

Thanks to all who took time to add to my chart. I just did a quick run through of the bb-ref draft app to find the pitchers.

After seeing those lists, I'm all the more impressed Tristan Casas is poised to be a Top 20 OPS hitter in the AL after being drafted so late in Round 1. Not quite Judgely, but impressive.

Oops, had he had enough at PAs, Casas would have slotted in at #6! in AL OPS, just ahead of Raffy Devers.

I simply missed Lakins but I read the wrong lines from my notes for Rogers and Duffy (I originally did 2005-2023 but expanded it back to 2000 and had added those at the bottom of my list and copied the correct anmes but the wrong rounds/picks). Anyway, I updated the list. Thanks for the corrections and the explanations of "via."

where the darn libs live
Fun story about Craig Hansen. He went to high school with a friend of a friend, who had the same initials. After getting drafted, Hansen used part of his money to buy a card with "CH" painted on the hood. And after Hansen flamed out, he tried to sell the car to the friend of a friend.
