I've discovered that the PGA Championship isn't on television in the UK this year. Which is...alarming? (Apparently it's on Facebook for free tomorrow and Friday before I'd have to pay for it over the weekend, but screw that - I'm not paying one cent or pence to watch golf at Bellerive.)

I didn't see Jordan Spieth listed and went scrambling to google to see if I had missed something. According to google, anyway, Spieth has a 2:37 tee time, along with Rose and Rahm.

Other than the Open rota, is there a course they play that you do like?

I’m posted up at the 10th tee right now. Furyk’s group just went off and Finau looks even taller in person. The crowd size right now for 7 in the morning is pretty nuts. I anticipate things getting pretty rowdy when scores start to go low.

Wait there’s no PGA Live broadcast for this? We literally can’t watch any golf until 2pm? What a fucking joke.

PGA Championship app, they have featured groups.

Starts with Tiger’s group, it’s them and the Mickelson group

Also - watching these guys on the range with shot tracker is unreal. They just hit the same shot over and over and over again with incredible precision.

If this was addressed at me, I love loads of courses. Bellerive shouldn't be anywhere near selection for a major championship - it's nowhere near the class of Whistling Straits, Erin Hills or Chambers Bay, to name three modern courses that aren't to everyone's liking (but which I find have plenty of merit), let alone the likes of Shinnecock or Oakmont or Winged Foot or Merion. It's great that golf fans in Missouri get to see a major, I guess...but I can't think of a single reason other than that for it to be a major venue.

If Tiger keeps missing fairways, especially with the driving iron, this could be a tough day for him.

Has he hit a fairway with that thing ever? He pulled it once in the British Open, barely missed taking a swim, and then put it in the bench. Tiger, just throw an X100 in that thing already.

Even when they play US Open courses they set them up like glorified tour stops. They narrow the fairways but not enough to press the players. They speed up the greens but not enough to embarrass anyone. It’s just so mediocre. The PGA is closer to the Player’s Championship or Fedex Cup than it is to the other three majors.

2 bunkers on 17 for Tiger, including falling short on a 130 wedge with low ball flight.

    Not looking good

If he’s not in contention I hope he misses the cut. You know they’ll show every shot of him grinding to a 40th place finish if he’s around for the weekend.

Tiger put one in the water from 110 yards on the 11th (his second hole of the day)? He throws away so many shots.

Birdie on 8 to get back to even on the day. Been an impressive grind for him to get here. Just needs to close with a par to keep momentum.

Impressive comeback after the start. As we saw with the US Open, he hasn't always been able to turn it around after a rough start.

4 this year about ESPN over-hyping Tiger, plus a few more dating back to 2014. Who cares about ESPN's golf coverage at this point? It's non-existent.

Back to the golf. Do we see anyone going low this afternoon? Will drying out/firming up help or hurt?

I lovE rooting againt SPieth so fuckiNg much. These guys aren't lighting up the course like they thought. Wonder what the scores would be if it was fast and hard. Drives are stopping on a dime in the fairway.

Would love to see Woodland stay in the mix. Dude has one of the longest balls for such a compact, short, easy swing. I’ve always liked him and have been waiting for him to get more consistent.

People might call this course boring, but it ain’t easy, it appears to be in pristine condition and as noted, the weather didn’t seem to kick out the low scores predicted; I also like when the vast majority guys go to a course they’ve never played. Seems like it’s long enough that being too soft from rain would cause issue. The head of PGA noted yesterday that they have some front tee boxes in the plan to make some risk reward holes, but I worry even that won’t make it worth guys going for greens with no run out on their drives. Good on Tiger for scrambling back to even. Should be a fun weekend.

Bubba Watson shot a 78 this morning. That's three straight missed cuts (and 4 of his last 5) at majors. He may be the guy Furyk needs to hide in Paris.

On the other side, Bjorn may have a Sergio problem. T71 right now and outside the cut, but it’s possible the cut line moves back. If Sergio stays outside, it will be 5 straight major MC’s. 131 in the FedEx standings, so a lengthy playoff run doesn’t appear to be in the cards. He did have 2 top 12 finishes on the Euro tour leading into the Open, but he’s basically been a disaster since the WGC match play. If he misses the cut today that is an MC in 7 of his last 11 starts, and that includes Firestone where there is no cut.

I guess he kind of has to be a captains pick based on his history, but his recent form has to give Bjorn some pause.

Well, yeah. That's unfortunately why he'll be on the team. But his recent form has been awful, and he's 3-8-0 in the competition, which is part why he was left off the last team despite being ranked #7 in the world. He's going to be a liability.

Also, if the winner of the PGA is American, he gets almost 4,000 Ryder Cup points, so there are a whole bunch of guys including Woodland, Kisner, and ZJ who would make the team with a win, and put even more squeeze on the potential captain's picks.

Off topic, what does everyone think potential pairings may look like in Paris? Right now the top 8 are DJ, Koepka, JT, Reed, Bubba, Spieth, Fowler, and Webb. Captains picks will probably include Tiger, Phil, Kuchar, and 1 of DeChambeau/Xander/Kisner/ZJ/Finau. For arguments sake, I'll take Kuchar.

    Friday morning
    Spieth/Reed
    DJ/Fowler
    Koepka/Webb
    JT/Tiger

    Friday Afternoon
    Spieth/Reed
    DJ/Kuchar
    Bubba/JT
    Mickelson/Fowler

I'm guessing Tiger/Reed becomes a pairing, and Spieth plays with JT. I think Spieth wants to play with JT and Reed wants to play with someone he doesn't have to carry all weekend.

Tiger and Dechambeau are also besties now and I could see them pairing up too.

NLU did a podcast on this a few weeks ago, and that was how they thought things would shake out with Tiger. Bryson for 4somes, Reed for 4ball. Bryson’s spot seems a bit precarious to me, but at the time (I think they recorded it the day of his meltdown in Europe) they said Tiger wanted Bryson on the team.
