Well sure, he could be. And Svi could be the next Duncan Robinson.
I like that teams make trades like this, in that they value guys differently. But the chances either of these players truly shine is quite small
Diallo should at least be a rotation player. He also doesn't turn 23 until the offseason. I have no clue what he's going to cost but I wouldn't mind the C's trading Semi and a 2nd for him, which is probably the equivalent. Diallo has improved his playmaking, can somewhat create his own offense, has great size/length (6'5, 7'0 wing span, 8'7 standing reach), very athletic (lane agility time of 10.53 seconds), ridiculous vertical (40.5 inches), can get to the line, high motor. I'd much rather have him than Svi.
He does have his warts but I love the trade for Detroit. While he get to the line, he's not a very good FT shooter and he's not a good 3 point shooter. Who knows if he ever will be but I'd take the gamble at the right price. I'm not sure why OKC decided to make that trade. Maybe they just think he'll be too expensive.
Diallo is the exact type of guy the C's should be targeting. Cheap, young, rotational talent with the potential to become significantly more. Even if Diallo didn't take the leap, he'd provide 20 minutes of decent play off the bench.
If Langford was having Diallo's season, we'd be hyping him. Granted, Langford is a year younger and has the better pedigree but they have a similar profile. Diallo was incredibly raw going into the draft so he was harder to project.
I could easily see Diallo becoming a core piece in the way Marcus Smart is a core piece. I think he also has the potential to be much, much more. I doubt he reaches his absolute upside, but it's probably higher than anyone that's been mentioned as possible trade targets for the C's (outside of Beal).
