Eagles were also the first team to hold a Week 1, Game 1 Friday game, way back in 1935.

Schefter also tweeting out absolute bullshit, incorrect info that it's the first time the NFL will have done so on a Friday night for opening kickoff. Like, this isn't even a matter of like OH AAFC! or other obscurities. There is most recently 1970, the first season post-merger, when the Cardinals and Rams also did just that. NFL likes to cut off a lot there to stifle the AFL's relevance still, but even using those standards and parameters, he's still objectively wrong.

It’s interesting because I believe they will only be able to broadcast this game because it falls on the 1st Friday in September (which is unusual…typically opening weekend is the 2nd week in September). The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 forbids the NFL from broadcasting games of Friday and Saturday within 75 miles of a high school/college. But it only applies from the 2nd Friday of September to the 2nd Saturday of December.

uhh... I don't think that was in Brazil, which is what the first ever refers to hence the comma.

If you were an Eagles fan, how pissed would you be about the "home opener" being in Brazil? Kind of like Santa opening in the Caribbean or something.

99.9% of fans aren't going to games anyway, what do they care?

Yeah it’s not like they won’t have a home opener in Philadelphia regardless. It being a “home” game is meaningless for everyone involved except season ticket holders and the owner I suppose due to the loss of one actual home game.

Better to get the stupid international game out of the way early I suppose

I'd rather the Eagles played zero international games, but if they have to play one you can't ask for a better slot than Friday of week 1. Time in front of the game to get there earlier than usual to adjust, and then a couple extra days to recover on the back end.

I can't see it being against Dallas, Was or NYG, and it can't be against Jacksonville & Carolina since they have other international commitments, so it has to be against Green Bay, Cleveland, Pittsburgh or Atlanta. $5 on Green Bay.

The other advantage is time zone. It's not like flying to England or Germany.

Without knowing the audio it's a little hard to judge. I could imagine some conversations that would be funny or self-deprecating, or even a light-hearted attempt to do community outreach in an attempt to do some image re-building.

But I don't believe any of that. The hat thing is fucking weird. And although the conversation looks reasonably cordial, attempting to intimidate a local business when you're a billionaire is fucking crazy.

NFL may be forced to step in and force sell if this behavior continues.
What do you mean? Just a little casual assault between equally situated human beings. Is he going to make his draftees remove their hats when they are in the presence of his eminence too? Might hurt his marketing.

What an asshole.

Upon reflection you are right. He’s more likely to end up in jail before the NFL has a chance to step in.

I think his throwing the drink on fans thing means Tepper doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt here.

I would love to know how the NFL office discussions go on subjects like these. What is crazy is that Tepper is only an NFL owner because the league forced his predecessor, Jerry Richardson, to sell.

Does this make them Repeat Offenders (TM) on the NFL discipline scale?

My old boss used to cover Tepper and had several face-to-face meetings with him. I need to ask whether this is all on-brand or not.

Also now that I think about it, the only way I would imagine that video gets out into the public is if the restaurant puts it out there. So, they probably were not amused. Or are trying to sell burgers. Or both.

I've seen it reported elsewhere that it's an extension on his current contract, so he'd be signed through 2027. He was already signed through 2025.
Pelissero just tweeted/mastodon'd a clarification that it replaces his old 2 year contract, and is NOT an extension. Says he's under contract through 2025.

Matt Ryan in at the NFL Today studio show on CBS -- Simms and Boomer are out.

I know people soured on Simms at the end of his tenure as the CBS color guy--I think it happens to a lot of QBs the further they get from the game--but he and Greg Gumbel were terrific at the outset of the dynasty. Their call of the Snow Bowl game was epic.

That's interesting. I always felt like Boomer was a pretty big personality on the show, I wonder if he didn't want to do it anymore or if the compensation wasn't enough. Maybe a little prickly at times. I thought Simms had no role and was redundant and out of place.

As with all things, it's time for the Boomers to be replaced by GenX/millennials.

Travis Kelce is a terrific weapon, a hall of famer. The idea that he's the greatest TE of all-time is, of course, ludicrous. He's a big WR who doesn't block much, he doesn't hold a candle to the ACTUAL GOAT TE Gronk and - seriously - is not even the greatest TE in Chiefs team history.

Never happy to see someone lose their job but I welcome this move. I’ve always found Simms to be swarmy, and Boomer didn’t bring much to the show. The CBS show always felt forced and phony to me. Especially in comparison to the Fox pregame, where that crew really seemed to get along and actually be enjoying themselves. I hope this change leads to CBS being better because it’s been dreadful for a long time.

Your last point kinda makes it seem like he’s pretty far down the pecking order if he can’t even be the GOAT on his own team. But of course many consider Gonzalez to be the best TE ever so Kelce isn’t knocked toooooo far down the all time list if he’s behind Gonzalez.

I think it’s Gronk 1, Gonzalez 2, and Kelce 3, personally. And Kelce has room to pass Gonzalez if he keeps piling up numbers and titles. Gronk is on a whole different level due to being an all world receiver and all world blocker.

Kelce is way past Gonzalez. Not even close. Dwarfs him in production per game, has had a much higher peak, is one of the best playoff performers in the history of the game. All Gonzalez has over him is longevity.

Ehhh, are we just going to discount the difference in eras and Kelce having Mahomes passing to him instead of, checks notes, Elvis Grbac and Trent Green?

BTW I’m not saying Kelce isn’t a better TE than Gonzalez. But using stuff like production per game and playoff performance when Gonzalez had dudes draped all over him while being thrown hospital balls by Trent Green on the way to their two playoff appearances seems kind of unfair.

Longevity and, by most accounts, a better blocker too, which matters a lot for that position. And, as Van Everyman points out, just as we need to adjust the stats for QBs given the modern passing era, we need to do the same for receivers.

But Kelce's receiving numbers are, indeed, phenomenal. No doubt about that. He's an absolute monster.

Travis Kelce as a starter with Alex Smith averaged 975 receiving yards and 6 TDs per season. Both higher than Gonzalez' totals. Better, more productive player.
