Guys,

I received a notice at my company through Microsoft's License & Contract Compliance Program requesting that I complete a self-audit of our MS software. As sketchy as it looks, it seems to be legit based on the researching I've done online. The original email was sent to my name, but a general email inbox found on our website. It was forwarded to me by the individual that monitors that mailbox (I ignored it). A followup email was addressed directly to me (no idea how my address was obtained) and mention of a FedEx package was made (that I've never seen). I've asked for a tracking number and proof of delivery with no response as yet.

My company buys everything legitimately, but it appears that the level of detail required by the audit is nearly impossible to satisfy (and intentionally so). A laptop's purchase receipt, for example, must tie to the OS license or there's no "proof" of legitimate purchase.

We don't have an IT department- I'm a mechanical engineer that coordinates IT with an external company. I plan on bringing them in to complete the audit work.

Has anybody ever been through one of these things? Is it just the money grab that it appears to be? Any idea what the fine structure looks like?

I have done multiple ones.  Do you use cdw, softmart, dell, or shi for your software purchasing?  Usually they can take care of it for you.

If not, it is fairly easy to do.  They are much more interested in Office products then trying to tie you down on OS tying to your machine.  Also they will be looking to make sure you are using CALs.

Our IT consultant does most of our software purchasing. Based on their level of work I'm guessing they already have something.

I've kept up with CALs, fortunately.

We'll see how it goes...
