Sure, why not? Let's see how efficient he is, maybe he can catch or play third.
At it's base, Bloom's job isn't hard; get good players and then you'll have a good team. Trying to prove how clever you are by dumpster diving on every transaction is becoming exhausting.
The exhaustion is really on us. Casual fans only follow the material moves; there’s nothing wrong with that. And those of us who follow the team closely miss the forest for the trees sometimes. It’s those material moves that make or break the club, at least in the short run.
Bloom is going to make a shitload of big moves in the next 18 months. He’ll still have a year left on Chris Sale’s contract heading into 2024, but everyone else on the team will be someone he either brought in or affirmatively decided to keep around. He’ll have made his mark on the farm system by then too. At that point, we’ll be better able to judge his administration; for now, we’re kind of making progress reports.
The 2021-22 offseason doesn’t look great. It’s too early to judge the prospects, but you’d probably undo the Renfroe trade if you could. And you’d probably resign Schwarber instead of bringing in Story. (That would have kept you under the tax line too; we don’t care about that in itself, but it should in theory mean more dry powder down the road.)
But looking at Bloom’s tenure as a whole, I’m still a fan. His 2020-21 offseason was great. He has upgraded the farm system more rapidly than I would have expected. And I can’t kill him for the Mookie trade; it was a deal he had to do given the financial parameters ownership gave him. The small stuff has been good, but it’s the handful of big moves he’ll make in the next year or two that will dictate the success of his tenure.
