This is like when the cool kids get a cute dog while your parents get you a half-dead goldfish from sketch-ball pet store.

For the record, the goldfish only lived for a few months but while alive, he showed flashes of being a truly great pet.

It also probably doesn’t help them that much. If he’s good, what then? It costs a lot more to re-up. All these 1 year deals add up- don’t the Sox have been in a better spot if they had given, say, Wacha a 3 year deal rather than a one? Or closed the deal on multi-year deals with one or Eovaldi, Eflin, or Lugo- as they tried to? Seems like the primary benefit of a one year deal is that you are out of it quickly- which is great only if the guy stinks. So, isn’t it preferable to find guys you think will be good and lock them up for a bit, as opposed to just the endless stream of one year deals?
This is an excellent point.

Yeah, to be clear I don’t really love this strategy and it’s why I was ready to back up the Brinks truck to Yamamoto. We need some sustainable long term pitching outside of Bello. The constant turnover makes compiling a quality rotation difficult year to year. But I can at least see some of the upside with Giolito. If he’s a secondary piece to someone like Montgomery, Snell, or Imanaga, I’d feel a bit better. But the cost of the first 2 guys may be prohibitive, especially with Snell’s QO.
I've been advocating for this approach for weeks @BigSoxFan . Sign Giolito first for 2yr/38m or 3 yr 50m. Then make the push for Imanaga when he is here in the states the week after New Year's which has been reported. 4yr/85 or 5/yr 100m. This should give you 300+ IP for a total outlay of less than the 2 Boras guys and you don't have to play his waiting game and still possibly lose out on both and then your F-ed.

Yeah, once Yamamoto went to LA, I was resigned to the fact that an Imanaga/Giolito type offseason is probably the best we can realistically do. I don’t think an impact trade is coming given the front office’s stance on rentals and the assumed strong preference to keep the Mayer, Teel, Anthony group. The rest of our prospects just aren’t good or established enough to pull off a major deal.

May I just say how much I appreciate the thread title? I can’t tell you how many copies of that cassette I wore out in the 90s. Also, Lucas Secon is truly a lovely person.

+1. I went looking for the video and found out it is blocked in US due to copyright with the Benny Goodman sample.

As for the acquisition it’s a good deal in this market. I am happy as long as it’s not the only SP the Sox sign.

Lot of pressure on Bailey to fix this guy. Let's hope he can rise to the occasion.

Hope this doesn't mean they're out on Montgomery.

I’m good. Just wanted a starter with four syllables ending in “…to.” This one was like 5-10% of what the other “…to” guy cost, so that’s good.

If Spider Tack was a big part of his success, can somebody please develop another sticky arachnid-themed substance to help recover his lost spin rate? Something like Tick Tack, I’m thinking.

Sorry, I’m pun-chy. Thinking that sadly, this is full-throttle. On a Lada or a Yugo, I guess that’s true.

I know, I know, there’s time. There’s also a bunch of suitors for a diminishing supply of anything approaching a difference maker.

I don't understand why they're willing to commit $20 million/year to Giolito but not $25ish/year for Montgomery? The difference that Montgomery would immediately make to our rotation is worth way more than $5 million. At worst, you're getting a solid, durable #2 pitcher without the question marks.
With Boras as his agent, Montgomery is not signing with anyone for a good stretch.
