Thread created by popular demand, to be updated with Wilson's suspension

    Other tidbits

    • Dmitrij Jaskin had asked for a trade out of St. Louis at the beginning of the summer prior to being finally put on waivers
    • Brady Tkachuk has a groin strain and won't suit up against the Blackhawks tomorrow despite breaking camp with the Sens
    • Jack Eichel named captain of the Sabres
    • Karl Alzner looks to be a scratch tonight, which would bring an end to his 622 game ironman streak. Only 4 years @ $4.625m AAV with $17.125m in real money left on that one
    • For the curious, full opening-night rosters are here

Expansion to Seattle is coming, official BOG vote will be in December, but it is a mere formality. Bettman hopes they begin play in 2020, but if not (cough lockout cough) it’ll be 2021. Same expansion rules as Vegas; Vegas will be exempt. The early rumor on realignment is to squeeze Seattle in is Arizona to the central.

About this time last year, there was chatter about the Coyotes going to Houston now that Les Alexander is out. If the NHL can get Barroway and co. to bring down their price to make that happen, it makes a TON of sense for everyone.

This was always the end-goal of the expansion process, with Quebec City being squeezed out. Then Seattle screwed that up by not having their ducks in a row with Foley and Vegas, so Jacobs played bad cop with concerns about the Canadian dollar. The radio silence of late from Pierre-Karl Peladeau makes me wonder if he hasn’t been told to shut up and be ready a la TNSE for a Melnyk/Dundon to give up the ghost in their cities.

There are 2 RFA holdouts this season. Nylander in Toronto and Nick Ritchie in Anaheim.

Shanahan says today that the Leafs plan to ask players to take less for the greater good, and that that was how they did it when he was in Detroit.

The DET comparison is dumb because that was in a pre-cap era, but I’m curious to see how this plays out with Nylander. This seems like a shot over the bow to me. Also, kinda funny that Shanny is preaching this given that he himself signed an offer sheet as an RFA.

I think there is real concern up there that they will not be able to keep all four of Tavares, Matthews, Marner and Nylander.

They also still don't have a defense.

Not very impressed with Shannahan's comments there, and neither should Nylander. Have to wonder long term how they handle this. Given the expectations up there, this could get really ugly if they don't start off on fire.

I’m sure Nylander will sign soon because he’s got no leverage and that’s how these things always end, but this is a situation where I wish offered sheets were actually a thing in the NHL. Some team with money and cap space to burn could really put the screws to the Leafs by signing Nylander to an over priced offer sheet. That team would either get the player or fuck up Toronto’s cap structure. Win-win, especially if the signing team was a contender.

Alas, teams don’t use the offer sheets. If it didn’t happen with Kucherov, it won’t happen here.

After those comments I’d hold out for every last dime. Then again I always think players on any team in any sport should. You only have a couple of chances to make money and you shouldn’t be made to fell like you have to take less as a young player to help the team.

Two years too late on Wilson, who's been a menace for far too long. He's really a piece of shit only interested in severely injuring other players, particularly with extremely dangerous head shots.

IMO 40-50 would have been getting it right for a guy with so much history, but it’s a step in the right direction

Stunned that they got it right. If he gets another one it should be for the season.

4th suspension in his last 105 games. Oddly enough, 3 of the 4 incidents occurred against the Blues. Forfeiting $1.6 million in salary.

Curious to see if the PA appeals.

Wow, that was unexpected, but I agree they got it right (at least as right as they could be without kicking him out the league entirely).

"for Tommy to be effective, he has to play the same way he plays. I don't think he can approach games differently. He does a lot of good things for us, and at times maybe he straddles that line a bit."

    http://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/24883738/capitals-forward-tom-wilson-suspended-20-games

Brooks Orpik defending this piece of shit. Full story in the link. I get he's a team mate and you support him, but saying stupid shit like "straddles the line a bit" is ridiculous. No Brooks. He doesn't "straddle" it. He crosses way over it. If he "has to play the same way" upon return, he will, and should be, out of the league permanently.

A quote like that (as well as the Chiclets guys falling over themselves to excuse Wilson) kind of sets me off. Would single guy who’s been a teammate of a guy like Savard or Lindros come out swinging in defense of a repeat offender doing this yet again?

There’s a reason 99% of the league doesn’t get repeated in-person hearings for head contact - it’s not hard to avoid concussing someone with your elbow, regardless of how much sandpaper your game has. The Chiclets guys specifically saying Sundqvist should expect head contact in a preseason game for shooting the puck in the slot kind of puts me off the show altogether.

As an aside I hold Marchand in the same boat - he could have and should have been gone for 10+ for the Johansson chicken wing. He should get at least 20-40 next time his elbow rings someone’s bell.

Players and ex-players can’t seem to add accept that you can’t hit a guy in the head when they’re cutting through the middle. Whitney, Biz and others all repeatedly went with “he’s (Sundqvist) on the railroad tracks, that’s hockey 101.” They can’t seem to understand that a guy can putting himself in a vulnerable position doesn’t mean you can light him up in the head.

BArry Melrose gets it. He says that Tom Wilson deserves it and that it has simply no place in the league today. He says that Wilson is a good guy and may even be a great teammate, but he has to cut it out. The game has changed and someone will die on the ice if Wilson hits people like that. Back in the day, players were slower and not as strong.
