Well that was a disaster, but at least they recouped something. Carroll back to West Ham for £15m.

Better news is this opens the door for an apparent £22m swoop for Mkhitaryan.

Translation: "Barça, you can have Pepe recreate his role with Spain for cheap."

Love the Mignolet deal. London PR firms aside, I don't think there was much argument that he was the best keeper in England over the past 18 months.

Mignolet is official

The deal with the Black Cats is now complete and the 25-year-old has penned a long-term contract after passing a medical at Melwood.

He becomes the first Belgian to represent the Reds - and has been welcomed to the club by manager Brendan Rodgers.

"I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League," said Rodgers.

"Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent."

I've read £9 million in most articles, but yeah, I would think Pepe is on his way out.  Valdes still has a year left on his Barca deal, so we will have to see how that plays out.

Apparently Dortmund are getting involved now, submitting a reported 23m bid to Shakhtar. Unclear where they stand re: Mkhitaryan's 3rd party ownership.

With Aspas, Alberto, Mignolet, and Touré in the fold already this window, I'd be comfortable with Rodgers backing down from a Mkhitaryan buy and rolling with Suarez if he can somehow be convinced to stay. However, if Suarez goes, I have a bad feeling that Rodgers will feel forced into a big buy and Shakhtar/Mkhitaryan's owners will leverage Dortmund's interest into it.

Looking at the full squad picture, assuming they complete the Ilori transfer and Suarez/Skrtel/Downing are gone:

GK: Reina, Mignolet, Jones

RB: Johnson, Kelly, Wisdom (loan?)
CB: Touré, Agger, Ilori, Wisdom, Wilson (his free to Hearts fell through due to their finances)
LB: Enrique, Robinson

CM: Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Henderson

AM/wings: Coutinho, Sterling, Aspas. Shelvey/Assaidi/Ibe/Suso - (sold/loaned?)

ST: Sturridge, Alberto, Yesil

With the uncertainty surrounding Sturridge's ankle and Touré as of now being a first choice CB, I'd love to see funds from Downing/Skrtel bring back a mobile marking CB like Papadopolous, and if Suarez is sold for another striker to come in.

I do have to hand it to Rodgers though, getting these deals through even before the window's officially opened is worlds better than going into a season with Suarez as the squad's lone striker while Sterling gets run down.

Yeah, this is better than 3 months of rumors of interest, followed by the guy signing with Spurs on deadline day.

Isn't Dortmund going after Eriksen? The reports are really up in the air for Mkhitaryan, seems that Dortmund is moving in for him but he wants to play in the Premier League and the interest is mutual between him and Liverpool.

Valdes having a year left might be a parting gift from Valdes to Barcelona. If Monaco wants him they'll have to buy him instead of picking him up for free.

Shelvey to Swansea for £6m.

I have a feeling this will come back to haunt Liverpool.

Why? He looks like a player who, if he had more speed and positioning awareness, could be very good, but doesn't, so he never will be.

He's 21 and showed promise IMO despite his rash tackling and imperfect finishing. A club like Swansea with competition on 4 fronts this season will be great for him, and I doubt he'd have been able to grow into his potential at Liverpool.

I don't lament the fact that he was sold, it was for a good profit. I just believe he can end up putting it all together eventually, and that Swansea is one of the ideal places for him to do so.

I'm surprised he went to Swansea because he doesn't have the skill set I'd expect in one of their guys, but I'm not surprised he left--and for the same reason, since Liverpool and Swansea play similar styles. The Norwich move made more sense to me.

The dreaded 3rd kit is out.

The shirt is bad enough (although compared to the away kit, I could live with it), but the socks are just...ugh.

Liverpool's friendly at PNE is on beINsport USA right now. Debuts for Mignolet and Toure, and perhaps a final appearance for noted hobbit Jay Spearing. Also a chance to get your Coutinho on.

Deepdale's a beautiful ground, btw. Premier League quality.

Coutinho wins a penalty after poking the ball away from John Welsh in the area. Coutinho moves to go free on goal from 10 yards and Welsh pulls him down by the shirt. Coutinho converts, 1-0 to Liverpool. If this weren't a friendly, it would have been a straight red, but no one wants a team a man down for a non-violent offense in this match.

That would have been an atrocious error to get caught on the ball in a competitive match. Nice demonstration by Coutinho, but Welsh probably won't ever play above League 1, so he won't get chances like that much in competition.

Borini bundled over in the box. Maybe a penalty in a competitive match, but like the call before, who really cares? The only reason I mention it is because Borini went over heavily enough to knock off the heart rate monitor strapped to his chest. I don't think I've seen one used in a match before.

It's for the best but I'll miss him. He's a better distributor than Mignolet but his shot-stopping has slipped over the past two campaigns.

It was inevitable.  You don't spend £9 million on a backup keeper.

Coutinho and Sterling scored in a 2-0 win over an Indonesian XI.  I'd post a couple of pictures, but they wore the 3rd kits.

Looks like Aly Cissokho is on his way in from Valencia for €1m loan and €4m option to buy after this season.

Have to wonder if Rodgers sees Enrique as a legitimate LB option week-in and week-out. In this system, I believe Enrique is ideal as the wide man on a 3-4-3 and as cover at LB and LW in the 4-3-3. He played some of his best football in an attacking role and can put his head down and barrel towards the area off the wing in a way Sterling/Assaidi can't.

This makes little sense unless it is for cover for Enrique.  Enrique is the most technically gifted LB that Liverpool has had in the Premiership era.  His talents fit perfectly into Rodgers system.  Aurelio is the only other one they have had with comparable skills, but he was to often the winner of the Harry Kewell Training table award.

Rodgers needs another CB prior to the start of the season. If Agger goes down for his usual injury, we are going to be truely fucked.  Skrtel and Toure at the back could be slower than Henchoz and Hyypia were.  I am starting to question his defensive philosophy as time goes on.  He surely is not from the camp that builds a team from the back.

Should Arsenal persist and have an improved bid accepted, it could come close to trebling their previous highest initial outlay on a transfer.

The Gunners, whose first offer for Suarez was £30m, paid a reported £15m to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin, in January 2009.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers last week said he considered Suarez to be at least as valuable as Edinson Cavani, who recently joined Paris St-Germain for £55m.

Real Madrid remain interested but have yet to make a formal offer.

This is what happens when LFC visits Australia for the first time - over 95,000 people in the MCG join in for a brilliant version of YNWA
